THOUGHT: Android 4.0 / Ice Cream Sandwich - available but not yet ready for Prime-Time?
Posted by Arne Hess - at 16:03 CET under 09 - Thoughts

Ok, Android 4.0/Ice Cream Sandwich is now - with the commercial launch of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus - available and one of the major goals for Google was to reunify the Android platform. Since the launch of Android 3.0 / Honeycomb, Google had two Android platforms - one for smartphones (Android 2.3.x aka Gingerbread) and one for tablets (Android 3.x aka Honeycomb). However, Google said before that it was working to reunify both streams again into a single platform and Android 4.0 was the result. As the name/number implies, Ice Cream Sandwich is far more than just a Honeycomb update for smartphones but a new and enhanced Android version. However, it seems it's not yet ready for prime time.

THOUGHT: Back from Angola - back on Duty
Posted by Arne Hess - at 15:41 CET under 09 - Thoughts

Have you missed me as much as I've missed you? Maybe you haven't noticed it all but I was away earlier this autumn but if you follow me on Twitter, you know that I was away for three months in Angola. Angola? The country between Namibia and the Democratic Republic of Congo? The country which was in a civil war for nearly 30 years which just ended in 2002 and the country which is still full of landmines? Yes, I'm talking about that Angola! A country which is the second largest oil exporter of Africa, rich of diamonds, unfortunately still full of landmines with Luanda, the capital, which is said to be the most expensive capital of the world, where a simple pizza can easily costs over US$ 35 or a beer in the supermarket up to US$ 5 or more!

THOUGHT: The Bird Cam - an experiment for watching Mother Nature and streaming Video wireless
Posted by Arne Hess - at 09:42 CET under 09 - Thoughts

Somewhat off-topic but just the right topic for today's Friday column is the Bird Cam I'm currently running. Roughly two weeks ago we noticed a Blackbird node with three eggs, next to our balcony and unlike the previous years, where we also had nodes but never followed the breeding, this year I wanted to follow the bird's work. Since we live in the 21st century I thought that it might be good idea to follow it with a webcam and first I thought about snapping a photo every minute and uploading it to the web server. However, it's the 21st century and uploading photos is old school and not the YouTube-way the Internet is about these days. Therefore I've installed the webcam with the plan to stream the breeding to the Internet.

THOUGHT: Microsoft MVP Global Summit 2011 - Windows Phone and Tablet PC
Posted by Arne Hess - at 19:12 CET under 09 - Thoughts

As you might have seen, I haven't posted anything to the::unwired this week but if you follow me on Twitter, you've seen that I was travelling. As a matter of fact I was again in Seattle for this year's Microsoft Most Valuable Professional (MVP) Global Summit, the largest customer event each year on Microsoft's main campus in Redmond. As every year, it was a jam-packed week and in addition to some open, non-NDA sessions like "Windows without Walls" where Microsoft showed how the Windows ecosystem from the desktop to the Xbox 360 to mobile devices to the services plays to each other, there was a keynote by Steve Ballmer, Microsoft CEO and for sure 1.5 days of deep-dive sessions with the Windows Phone product team which were - as you can imagine - under NDA.

THOUGHT: The Good, the Bad, the Ugly or how well is Windows Phone 7 selling?
Posted by Arne Hess - at 12:37 CET under 09 - Thoughts

Back in November, Deutsche Telekom released a statement where the company said that was was "very satisfied" with the initial Windows Phone 7 sales in Germany and later, Microsoft's Achim Berg, Vice President of Business and Marketing for Windows Phones, followed-up that he was also quite satisfied with the whole Windows Phone 7 eco-system development. However, earlier this year, James Choi, Marketing Strategy and Planning Team Director of LG Electronics told Pocket-lint in an interview that "LG had a high expectation from an industry perspective, but from a consumer point of view the visibility is less than LG expected".
