SITE: the::unwired's Sister Site the::placeshift Soft Launched today
Posted by Arne Hess - at 13:34 CET under 06 - Site News

Today, I'm happy that I have soft launched the::placeshift and if you are a regular visitor of the::unwired, I'm sure you know what the::placeshift is about - it's about place shifting your media. Since I made my first experiences with some "self-cooked" software some time ago, I'm thrilled about place shifting my personal media to my mobile devices. However, since I'm not a software developer at all, I never continued on my own but thankfully some companies like Sling Media, Orb and others jumped into the game by developing and offering great place shift solutions.

Since I was using these solutions the first time on my Windows Mobile devices and Notebooks (doesn't matter if at home or on the go), I knew this will become another major hype and not just a buzzword because place shifting media - doesn't matter if it is TV, video, audio or photos - gives the us access to the highest possible customized content, something very special and personal. Place shifting as a technology adds real value to mobile devices, from mobile phones to PDAs to UMPCs to Notebooks/Tablet PCs and the feedback I got from the::unwired readers (when I was covering place shifting technologies) was so overwhelming that I've decided to launch a new dedicated platform for consumers, where you get the latest information, tips, tricks and reviews about place shift developments. And if I follow the last week's CES announcements and developments, it's simply the perfect timing to start the new platform today.

SEASON GREETINGS: Merry Christmas from the::unwired
Posted by Arne Hess - at 14:57 CET under 06 - Site News

Dear readers of the::unwired!
On behalf of the::unwired team, I want to wish you a very merry Christmas.
Not sure how many of you read this lines since now it's a good time to let the PC switched off, enjoy the pre-Christmas weekend and might spend some timewith your friends and family; at least I will go offline now since I will drive home for Christmas too.
Anyway, I want to say thank you, dear loyal readers for visiting the::unwired another year and making the site a great community. Thanks for all your input, thoughts, feedback, postings and E-Mails - it's a pleasure to work for you. Also I want to thank all contributing editors for their work as well as I want to thank my girlfriend for her support!

If you are not a Christian (and many of you aren't - I'm sure, according to my server logs) it doesn't matter at all: I wish you a peaceful time too and maybe you can also enjoy the one or the other minute with your friends and family! Have happy season holidays!

SITE: Some Forum House Keeping and Changes
Posted by Arne Hess - at 14:11 CET under 06 - Site News

Over the weekend I - and even more important - my site developer (the technical brain behind everything you see here) spent some time for some important forum maintenance and house keeping.
First of all, we faced some serious spam problems during the past weeks where spam bots and zombie PCs posted a huge amount of spam into the forums.
Basically, this is pretty easy for spam bots and zombie PCs because they fake the submit command in HTML codes without being physically on the site. Nevertheless, this works - for spammers - pretty successful and I had a lot of work to get the spam cleaned out again since it was annoying and sometimes even offensive.

PODCAST: The first unwired::cast now available [UPDATE]
Posted by Alfredo Padilla - at 18:37 CET under 06 - Site News

One of the things that I've been wanting to do since I was brought on as an Editor in Training was to start getting some audio content out to our fans. I am still working on putting together a fully fledged podcast, but in the interim I have decided to make my "Thoughts" available in audio format.

I hope that this will make some of our content more accessible to those of you who, like me, lead busy lives and don't always have the time to read a long article. So without further ado, I'd like to introduce my first the::unwired unwired::cast, available after the jump.

SITE: Know your the::unwired access options
Posted by Arne Hess - at 15:27 CET under 06 - Site News

During the past weeks, I've spoken with some companies and readers and many of them weren't aware, that the::unwired offers a) a perfectly designed mobile version and b) a RSS Feed. So no, you can not come here from your PC or MAC only but also from your mobile devices.
Unlike some other sites, for the mobile version of the::unwired you don't have to remember any different URLs but www.theunwired.net is simply good enough to get the access to the::unwired - from your Windows Mobile Pocket PC, Pocket PC Phone Edition, Smartphone or virtually any other WAP 2.0/xHTML enabled mobiles device as well.
The Content Management System (CMS) does all the rest since it recognizes the device and browser and either serves you the PC version or the mobile device optimized version (bellow the PC version followed by the the mobile version with a QVGA Pocket PC and Smartphone while it also works with CIF and VGA screens):
