THOUGHT: What does Windows Phone 7 Series need to have a Head Start?
Posted by Arne Hess - at 17:52 CET under 09 - Thoughts

Just ahead of next week's MIX10 conference, where Microsoft will (hopefully) unveil further details and information about its upcoming Windows Phone 7 Series platform, I thought about what Microsoft needs to make Windows Phone 7 a successful platform. Is it about multitasking or the ability to upgrade today's Windows Mobile 6.5 phones? No, at the end of the day, I came to the conclusion that it is about apps, apps and apps again. Why apps? Well, doesn't matter how good or bad Windows Phone 7 is out of the box - today's mobile phone and smartphone users expect something more from its device than just the 10 to 20 years old GSM services like voice, SMS and MMS.

THOUGHT: Blame the Buttons for the Lack of Windows Phone 7 Series Updates?
Posted by Arne Hess - at 13:33 CET under 09 - Thoughts

As a matter of fact, Microsoft confirmed in Barcelona that Windows Phone 7 Series devices require the Windows, back and search keys as well as a camera key, in addition to the volume rocker and power button.

KNOWLEDGE: What the ISO, Mini and Micro SIM Card is all about
Posted by Arne Hess - at 17:19 CET under 09 - Thoughts

During the recent Mobile World Congress I had the chance to speak with some product managers of Munich-based Giesecke & Devrient (G&D), one of the major SIM card manufactures worldwide and for sure one topic was the Micro SIM which Apple brought to our attention when it announced that the upcoming Apple iPad will come with a Micro SIM card slot instead of a Mini SIM or ISO SIM card slot. So what's all the ISO, Mini and Micro SIM is about? When GSM hit the market in 1992, the GSM MoU also made the use of SIM cards (Subscriber Identity Module) mandatory for GSM phones. Basically, there were two SIM cards specified: The ISO SIM and the Mini SIM, also often called Plug-in SIM.
