THOUGHT: Google's Nexus One rose like a Phoenix - Coincidence or brilliant Viral Marketing?
Posted by Arne Hess - at 10:04 CET under 09 - Thoughts

You really have to wonder how all the Google/HTC Nexus One info rose like a phoenix! Last week at the same time, nobody outside Google and/or HTC knew anything about a so called Nexus One Android smartphone which isn't just another Android smartphone but the first to sport Android 2.1/Flan and furthermore expected to be directly distributed by Google. Everything started with a couple of tweets last Friday, followed by a very quick blog response on Google's Mobile Blog. Than, if you thought you knew everything, the first blurry photos appeared on the web - "accidentally" posted on Google's very own Picasa service - and it doesn't took too long that the first videos appeared on Google's very own YouTube service as well.

THOUGHT: Localized Application Stores - not a bad Idea at all?
Posted by Arne Hess - at 16:56 CET under 09 - Thoughts

Microsoft doesn't received a good feedback when it launched its Windows Marketplace for Windows Mobile Windows phones two weeks ago because at the moment, Microsoft is providing localized versions of the Market Place only. This means that an US American customer will get US-related English software only while a German will get Germany-related German software only as well. As a matter of fact, developers have to localize their software offer, otherwise Microsoft won't approve it for the Windows Marketplace. While - on the first sight - it seemed to be a bad decision, it seems that Microsoft is closer to the mass-market than power-users thought about it first.

THOUGHT: Abroad but Connected - on the way with the SlingCatcher and MiFi
Posted by Arne Hess - at 16:20 CET under 09 - Thoughts

It's somewhat funny (or sad, however you take it). Was all the (mobile and wireless) technology originally designed to make life easier, it made the life somewhat more complicated but - no question - also more convenient. When I was in vacation at Mallorca last week, I put two mobile phones into the bag as well as my camera and some chargers. So far so good and in the pre-mobile phone days, you put a book into the bag instead the mobile phone and nobody thought about chargers because just a battery for needed for the simple Kodak cameras. However, since (for me) vacation never means disconnected, I also put my Netbook into the bag (which thankfully allowed me to leave my way heavier Notebook at home), my Apple Airport Express wireless access point, but also my Novatel MiFi, a Proporta USB Mobile Device Charger and even my Slingmedia SlingCatcher.
