PPC 2002: Interactive O2 xda Flash demo
Posted by Arne Hess - at 17:11 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Are you looking forward to the availability of the new O2 xda with it’s GSM/GPRS support? Than I have a link for you, you will like!

As this interactive Flash 5 demo is from VIAG Interkom, the German subsidiary of mmO2, the whole presentation is in German. Anyway, it gives you a clear overview what the xda will be.

As I was working for VIAG Interkom until 31. September this year as the Busines Developer and Product Manager for the Wireless Internet, I hold the xda in my hands in summer and I must say it’s the killer device for me! :-) Also it makes me very proud that they are still using my mobile Internet portal which II designed for the CeBIT exhibition as a show case for how powerful Pocket PCs are and why they are the right 2.5G/3G devices.

BTW: Please don’t ask me why I left VIAG Interkom and such a cool project I was working on... A man have got to do, what he’ve got to do... ;-)

Enjoy the demo, cheers ~ Arne

BLUETOOH: ActiveSync via Bluetooth?
Posted by Arne Hess - at 03:20 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Well, there is still one thing I'm missing on my Pocket PC/Bluetooth card combo - it's synching wireless via Bluetooth. On Systems last week I spoke with some people who are involved into the Bluetooth development and we was talking about the option Bluetooth already offers today or will provide in near future.

Since I'm missing the Bluetooth support on ActiveSync, I've asked when to expect it and you know what's the answer was? "Not with ActiveSync 3.x". AS 3.x doesn't support virtual COM ports which are necessary for a Bluetooth support on ActiveSync. :-(

This was confirmed by several people and therefore it seems that it is the herb truth... :-( I wonder when will this issue fixed by Microsoft?

WIRELESS: The Systems convention in Munich with a Bluetooth showcase
Posted by Arne Hess - at 20:29 CET under 09 - Thoughts

Last week, we had the Systems convention here in Munich. Well, it wasn't as busy as the last years. One reason why some exhibitors was missed was some companies aren't allow there staff right now to use any airplanes, like Toshiba where it is forbidden for everybody to take a flight right now.

The other reason is the conjuncture, the .COMs aren't exists anymore or haven't the money for exhibitions and also companies like Siemens or O2 have to save money. However, a lot of other companies was presented for sure.

One of them was Anycom (the manufacture of the Bluetooth Anycom cards) and they had an interesting trial running in one hall: Hall B4 was fully covered with Bluetooth and every visitor could borrow Bluetooth equipped hardware to access the net. Fantastic show case what Bluetooth is able to provide right today.

However, there was one problem: Since the whole hall was covered it was likely impractical to access the own Bluetooth equipment as happened a friend of mine:

A booth, fully equipped
with Bluetooth antennas!

Bluetooth identifies itself with BD addresses, a kind of unique MAC addresses as used for W-LAN. To access your mobile phone from your Pocket PC for example, you have to select the right BD address in the Bluetooth configuration program. Can you imagine what's happen if there are more than 30 Bluetooth access points? Yes, you have a list of 31 BD addresses and you don't know anymore which one is your mobile phone... ;-)

Okay, you can give your Bluetooth equipment a unique name but this isn't required and therefore my friend didn't find his mobile phone! :-> He had to leave the hall, out of the Bluetooth range, to find his mobile phone again...

He, he, he... This is a bug from my point of view and I'm sure that a lot of people will not give their devices a unique name! This will be funny next year if we have a Bluetooth penetration and everybody within the airline lounges is searching his headset... ;-)

Cheers ~ Arne

With such key enhancements as editable meeting responses, auto configuration and spell checking, Pocket PC 2002 makes it easier than ever to make most of the mobile inbox.

It can be daunting to setting up the E-Mail properly. Pocket PC 2002 goes now a long way toward removing that hurdle with it's automated setup process. You will go through the creation steps now. To use the automated setup process be sure you have a network connection even my LAN or with your mobile phone or the device in the cradle.

If you try to access the automated setup process outside the USA it could be, that the automatic setup fails because your ISP isn't available at Microsoft's database.

HOW TO: Connect a Pocket PC 2002 with a GSM Mobile Phone
Posted by Arne Hess - at 20:15 CET under 11 - Tips and Tutorials

The primary purpose of Connection Manager is to centralize and automate the establishment and management of various kinds of network connections. Connection Manager can handle many of different types of connections including PPP (RAS) connections, PPTP connections and NDIS adapters. It can also configure proxy server settings in applications that are capable of using them.

Connection Manager works by abstracting all connection knowledge from the applications themselves. It also auto-disconnects networks when they are idle for a specified time. This frees applications from having to deal with these low-level connection issues.

REVIEW: Stay Wired with your SCOTT eVEST
Posted by Arne Hess - at 20:04 CET under 08 - Reviews

Do you know how to carrey all your gadgets? Scott knows it!

3 weeks ago I got an E-Mail which sounds like heaven. Dave Chappell from a company called SCOTT eVEST asked me if I would like to review a product called eVEST and give him feedback about possible improvements. Scott's eVEST? At that time, I didn't have a clue, but 3 clicks later I had. SCOTT eVEST is a vest, in the tradition of fishing vests. But what your and my father wears for fishing is slightly different from that what we used to carry with us. The electronic gadgets!

So the idea of Scott was to create a vest which can take all his devices like mobile phones, PDAs, digital cameras and even a Subnotebook.
But enlarging the pockets only wasn't enough for him. He wanted to connect all devices that he can use them - right out of the pocket. That's the reason that all pockets of SCOTT eVEST have small slots on the inside. Beside the front zipper the SCOTT eVEST have some small flaps which can be used as cable trenches. This idea protects every cable and everything is stored in a save way.

WIRELESS: Update of a Smartphone formerly known as Stinger
Posted by Arne Hess - at 19:56 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

One of the most interesting presentations for me at m?s 2001 was for sure the Microsoft Stinger update we got. I saw Stinger (which isn't anymore named Stinger because of some trademark conflicts) one year ago in Redmond and since that time Microsoft worked hard on the user interface. It's slightly different from what we saw before, e.g. on last CeBIT. So Microsoft changed the today screen to HTML which allows to personalize the phone even more.

Based on the Windows CE platform (the Stinger platform isn't based on Pocket PC!) Microsoft redeveloped the whole concept totally new when they decided to build a mobile phone core system. This is important to know and remember as Stinger Smartphones aren't Pocket PCs with a keyboard but a totally new developed OS which uses resources and sources from the existing one PDA platforms.

REVIEW: Bluetooth Internet Access with a Mobile Phone
Posted by Arne Hess - at 19:45 CET under 08 - Reviews

Connecting the Internet via a mobile phone by using the Pocket PC, might be the most interesting case to use Bluetooth. The question after all is, how easy this will works.

It doesn't works as easy as setting up a Internet connection using infrared or even a cable connection. Before you can setup a call, you have to configure your Pocket PC and mobile phone first. At least, you have to do this only one time - the first one, after you configured everything proper, it's just the same as setting up a DUN connection via infrared or cable.

WIRELESS: The Perfect Surf
Posted by Arne Hess - at 19:40 CET under 09 - Thoughts

How I connect my Pocket PC with my new Siemens S45 for a convenient Internet access.

Back to the past
I'm looking since a long time for the perfect combination to use the Internet wireless. At least, this was the reason why I bought my first Windows CE device, a Sharp Mobilon, end of 1997. When I hold it in my hands and I tried to connect it to my Ericsson GF788 with attached IrDA modem, I recognized that both infrared ports doesn't spoke together.

This was the time I had a deeper look into the Windows CE OS, I visited a lot of Newsgroups and tried a lot by myself - until I found the problem. The infrared port of the Mobilon (Windows CE 2.0) wasn't attached to the dial-up networking of Windows CE.

WIRELESS: Visual IT - Red Phone
Posted by Arne Hess - at 19:35 CET under 09 - Thoughts

Synchronize your Pocket PC contacts with your mobile phone with three taps only. Using a Pocket PC and a mobile phone is a common package today. Doesn't matter if you use both as stand alone products or connect both to use it for accessing the Internet wireless there is one thing most users of a Pocket PC and a mobile phone with an IrDA port looks for: synchronizing the contacts from the Pocket PC to the mobile phone SIM Card.

There are several options by using a 3rd party software as Windows CE 3.0 doesn't support contact sending to a mobile phone today. But no other software as Visual IT's Red Phone is developed for this task only and this makes Red Phone so interesting.

With a simple user interface it's 3 clicks only to send the phone numbers from the Pocket PC to a mobile phone!
