PPC 2002: HTC is rumored to soon launch own-brand PDAs
Posted by Arne Hess - at 19:38 CET under 01 - General News

Thanks to Christopher Coulter for passing me this link:

High Tech Computer (HTC), a Taiwan-based PDA (personal digital assistant) manufacturer, is planning to introduce own-brand PDAs to target the China market, the Economic Daily News Chinese-language newspaper reported. Although HTC has denied the reports, Microsoft disclosed that the Taiwanese company has received Pocket PC 2002 operating system (OS) licenses for both contract manufacturing and own-brand distribution, the Economic Daily News added.

HTC is the world’s largest producer of Pocket PC-based PDAs. Its clients include Compaq Computer, Toshiba, Sharp and Sagem (and don't forget the mmO2 xda - PPCW.N). To avoid conflicts between its clients and its own brand, HTC will hand distribution responsibility to Hong Kong-based Xander International.

THOUGHTS: As time goes bye - or how color displays will make it's way
Posted by Arne Hess - at 21:56 CET under 09 - Thoughts

Holy cow, just surfed through the search engines and searched for information about some of my history and I found this statement I gave the Washington Post during an interview on CeBIT last year:

"Why can't Nokia make light, attractive phones with color displays?" asks Arne Hess, business development chief at VIAG Interkom, the German carrier that launched the continent's first GPRS network in December. ;-)

And today? We have the first colored mobile phones in the GSM market (Ericsson and Trium) and still no colored Nokia phones - just an announcement only. Samsung just announced a new mobile phone with a 128 x 160 pixel

If you want to see a FOMA handset in action, this Flash animation is a must for you. There you can watch a video phone call, which will be for sure one of the killer-application of 3G.

I'm not sure if the video call already is introduced on the FOMA network but I wonder how they can stream audio and video with 128 Kbps "only" as a best effort. Anyway, this Flash provides you a view into the near future and I would like to see video streaming devices even today, doesn't matter if it is supported by the mobile networks. The W-LAN networks would support it already.

So I would like to hear your opinion which GUI you would prefer or how your perfect telephony application GUI could looks like. You can vote for one of three existing skins of different devices and programs - already existing. The devices/programs doesn't matter here and if you know which skin is from which device/application, please keep it secret. PPC 2002 UPDATE: Keep the European Compaq upgrade
Posted by Arne Hess - at 20:06 CET under 01 - General News

Kevin Tea from pda pro sent in this news I'm publish here for sure as I fully agree with his opinion. For us Europeans it's hard to see, that Compaq stopped selling the Pocket PC 2002 update for iPAQs of the H3600 series. So everybody who buys an iPAQ H3600 in Europe now should check first if the device is updated or not. If it's not updated, there is no legal way (now) to update the iPAQ to Pocket PC 2002 anymore.

Cheers ~ Arne

Don't know if you can help out with this but every little helps:

Reading comments here and other bulletin boards there is considerable anger and frustration at the stance taken by Compaq in stopping the sale of the iPAQ PocketPC 2002 upgrade in Europe.

Those people who had been bitten by the 1.77 ROM upgrade last year and who were exercising caution before paying for the upgrade can no longer obtain a copy.

Those people who bought 3600 series in December and January in the well-versed belief that Compaq iPAQs were upgradeable have found otherwise.

Compaq's nonsensical decision to halt sales in Europe is playing into the hands of the Warez community.

If you want to register your protest, PDA Pro is collecting emails which will gauge the strength of feeling in this matter. Just go and register your protest now!

WIRELESS: The 2002 Sundance Film Festival mobile digital solution
Posted by Arne Hess - at 14:03 CET under 01 - General News

The 2002 Sundance Film Festival (Park City, Utah, January 10 - 20, 2002) will screen 113 feature films at various theater venues throughout Park City, Utah and receive over 20,000 visitors, including the film industry's top executives, directors, producers, and press. Traditionally, the primary on-site event information including schedules, venue details, hospitality activities, and other data was limited to one 300+ page bound catalogue. This medium served as an integral planning tool for VIPs attending the festival to conduct film industry business.

For the first time, through an agreement with FluxNetwork, the 2002 Sundance Film Festival will use the latest wireless technology to provide attending VIPs with a convenient, rich media and mobile experience. FluxNetwork has teamed up with Hewlett-Packard and Symbol Technologies to deliver a mobile wireless solution to 500 VIP attendees. The HP Jornada 568PDA will run FluxNetwork's software and wirelessly receive festival content with the Symbol CompactFlash wireless adapter. VIP attendees will receive wireless daily updates of short films, film trailers, interviews, calendar updates, festival news and insights, with the video content utilizing Microsoft's Windows Media technology.

GPRS: Derdack is testing GPRS push capabilities on Pocket PC
Posted by Arne Hess - at 23:04 CET under 01 - General News

As I wrote some days ago together with the Message Master Mobile Client announcement, Derdack - the German Software and Solutions house, is currently testing GPRS push services. As we already know; with GPRS we can stay always online and because the GPRS device got an IP address assigned, it's reachable from the Internet also. That's where Derdack is currently working on, pushing information to wireless GPRS devices. The first trial is about E-Mail. In general every E-Mail client is pulling the E-Mail messages from the POP3 or IMAP4 server. Pushing the E-Mails from this server to the client isn't the standard today. However, this is one of the coolest features of GPRS; that the network could push's you messages, not only E-Mails but also Location Based Information and so on.

Thanks to Margi USA, I got a reviewers sample of Margi's Presenter-to-Go CF-Card today. Find a full featured review here within the next few days but let me give you my first impression: It's amazing. After I opened the package and installed the drivers and plug-ins for Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, etc. I connected the card with my PC monitor ('cause I don't have a video projector here but in the office only) and tested a graphical presentation on the monitor and hey, it looked like on my 10 times more expensive Sony Notebook!

REVIEW: Socket Bluetooth Connection Kit
Posted by Arne Hess - at 14:20 CET under 08 - Reviews

Bluetooth becomes more and more popular. Specially since Ericsson launched the T68 Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, more people think about connecting their Pocket PC with this new short range communication type. For some weeks now, the Socket Bluetooth CF card is available. Thanks to Socket I got one for testing here.
Socket is well known for it's connection solutions. Years ago, they was the first one who offered CF card based cable solutions for different mobile phones. This solutions still works, even today with modern GPRS mobile phones. However, connecting phones with Pocket PCs via a cable isn't convenient anymore and also infrared fails if you are walking or have not enough space to configure it like on trains.

Therefore, Bluetooth seems to be the best way to connect different devices - just setup a connection and from now it doesn't matter anymore where you have your mobile phone - in the pocket, baggage or on the belt.

The Socket Bluetooth card is a CF Type I size. Type I means that you can use it with every one of today's available Pocket PCs or Pocket PC 2002s (for the Compaq iPAQs you still need a CF card jacket). So the card will also works with HP Jornadas which supports Type I card only as Type II are a little bit thicker.

The Socket Bluetooth card has the same size as a CF memory card, this means it doesn't have an

Posted by Arne Hess - at 12:04 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

If you like to use SMS, the Derdack Message Master might be the right software for you. Maybe you used it before on your Pocket PC or Windows CE P/PC. Unfortunately, because some change in the Inbox, the previous Message Mater version didn't worked anymore with Pocket PC 2002. Now Derdack released Message Master Mobile Client Beta 6.1:

  • SMS messaging with full integration into Pocket Outlook
  • Mobile phonebook management with Pocket Outlook Contacts
  • Mobile weather information, stock info and mobile dictionary
  • Dialling of phone numbers from Contacts , Mobile e-mail via SMS
  • Mobile information and application access via GPRS (11/2001)

Also new is the GPRS implementation where Derdack is currently running a friendly user test of E-Mail push services. I'm testing this functionality too as you can imagine and will give you here an update soon!

PPCW.N: Back at home - my wishes for 2002
Posted by Arne Hess - at 20:33 CET under 09 - Thoughts

Oh yes, feels good to be back at home. Back on my 1000 MHz desktop PC, no more 400 MHz only and even more important, a 19" display and a flat high-speed Internet connection... :-)
By the way high-speed Internet connection: I've lost my second LAN card (within 9 days - see the left picture). That's unbelievable, seems that end 2001 wasn't the year of my LAN cards; now I have a new one and I'm back in business.
Thanks a lot for all your E-Mails and input, it will still take a little bit to respond everybody! Also thanks a lot for your good wishes for 2002!

What does I expect for 2002? Well, PPCW.N will be as it is today, your source for wireless and Pocket PC based communication. Thanks to Socket and Jerome I got a Socket Bluetooth CF card for testing - so you can expect a review of this card soon! Also I will give you a comparison of the Socket and at least the Anycom
