THOUGHTS: As time goes bye - or how color displays will make it's way
Posted by Arne Hess - at 21:56 CET under 09 - Thoughts

Holy cow, just surfed through the search engines and searched for information about some of my history and I found this statement I gave the Washington Post during an interview on CeBIT last year:

"Why can't Nokia make light, attractive phones with color displays?" asks Arne Hess, business development chief at VIAG Interkom, the German carrier that launched the continent's first GPRS network in December. ;-)

And today? We have the first colored mobile phones in the GSM market (Ericsson and Trium) and still no colored Nokia phones - just an announcement only. Samsung just announced a new mobile phone with a 128 x 160 pixel

USB: Connect a USB Floppy Disk to your Casio E-200
Posted by Arne Hess - at 14:31 CET under 09 - Thoughts

Some days ago I wrote here about my experience with connecting a USB keyboard with the Casio Cassiopeia E-200. Today, Jason from Pocket PC Thoughts posted a link to a site, where a user reported about the successful connection of its USB floppy disk drive with the Casio E-200.

Because I have an external USB floppy disk (PCGA-UFD5) drive for my Sony notebook too, I also tried this combination for sure.

CONNECTIVITY: How fast is GPRS today - one year after the launch?
Posted by Arne Hess - at 21:28 CET under 09 - Thoughts

Today I made several tests with the GPRS speed on Pocket PC 2002's, using a web based speed test and I was amazed about the results:

I was able to get down-streams up to 35.6 Kbps. While I redo the tests several times on a 4 + 2 GPRS device, overall I got speeds between 10 Kbps and 35 Kbps. That's amazing since it is more than 3 times faster than the regular

WIRELESS PPC: It's a question of the GUI - vote for it!
Posted by Arne Hess - at 14:11 CET under 09 - Thoughts

For some weeks now, I'm playing with different Graphical User Interfaces for the telephony application of Wireless Pocket PCs. All GUIs have a virtual display and a virtual keyboard (makes sense as it should simulate a telephone) but in the details it differentiates.

So I would like to hear your opinion which GUI you would prefer or how your perfect telephony application GUI could looks like. You can vote for one of three existing skins of different devices and programs - already existing. The devices/programs doesn't matter here and if you know which skin is from which device/application, please keep it secret. It's not about "this device is cooler than this", it's about the design and usability:

CONNECTIVITY: Connect a USB keyboard with your Casio E-200
Posted by Arne Hess - at 19:25 CET under 09 - Thoughts

The new Casio E-200 supports USB, so the USB Cradle for the E-200 has a USB Host Port which allows you to connect USB Peripherals to your E-200 like a Keyboard, Mouse or other USB Accessories. Also available for the Cassiopeia is a 20 Pin/USB Host adapter. This also adds a USB Host port which allows you to connect USB peripherals to your E-200. So far so good and the theory. My Logitech Cordless Keyboard has a USB plug, even if it is wireless, I though I should give it a try as it is the only USB enabled keyboard I have and here is the result:

APPLICATION: Bluetooth based chat program
Posted by Arne Hess - at 13:34 CET under 09 - Thoughts

Bluetooth developers all over the world!
I just have an idea for a program I didn’t found until today, it’s a Bluetooth chat application. It would be funny to chat with other people like colleagues in boring meetings. I got this idea yesterday when I was in such a meeting and I had to tell a colleague on the other side of the table something. He had a Palm with Bluetooth, I had a Bluetooth enabled Pocket PC. However, we was not able to communicate via Bluetooth and I had to take my mobile phone to send him a SMS. It would be more funny

PPCW.N: Back at home - my wishes for 2002
Posted by Arne Hess - at 20:33 CET under 09 - Thoughts

Oh yes, feels good to be back at home. Back on my 1000 MHz desktop PC, no more 400 MHz only and even more important, a 19" display and a flat high-speed Internet connection... :-)
By the way high-speed Internet connection: I've lost my second LAN card (within 9 days - see the left picture). That's unbelievable, seems that end 2001 wasn't the year of my LAN cards; now I have a new one and I'm back in business.
Thanks a lot for all your E-Mails and input, it will still take a little bit to respond everybody! Also thanks a lot for your good wishes for 2002!

What does I expect for 2002? Well, PPCW.N will be as it is today, your source for wireless and Pocket PC based communication. Thanks to Socket and Jerome I got a Socket Bluetooth CF card for testing - so you can expect a review of this card soon! Also I will give you a comparison of the Socket and at least the Anycom
