PPCW.N: Mobile channel redesign
|
|
Posted by Arne Hess - at 17:18 CET under 06 - Site News
|
Today I launched a completely new mobile channel interface for Pocket PC Writer.Net. I have to admit, that the old one looked a little bit crap and loveless. It was a plain PHP script which took the last 10 articles from the database and provided it for you by direct access, AvantGo or Mazingo. However,

AVANTGO: Dropped the AvantGo channel of Pocket PC Writer.Net today
|
|
Posted by Arne Hess - at 18:05 CET under 06 - Site News
|
Because AvantGo kicks
out its early supporters and doesn't allow users to create custom accounts anymore or even want to get money from sites like Pocket PC
Writer.Net to be listed, I've dropped all AvantGo support now. I'm not able to pay for distributing my contents and why should makes other money from my ideas?
Anyhow, I would like to thank you for using AvantGo in the past on your PDA and I would like to welcome you offline on your Pocket PC again. Therefore I would like to ask you to switch to Mazingo, which is free of charge for you anyway - as before AvantGo - but offers you more features incl. Audio and Video synchronization.

CONNECTED: Back again on the Net

Puh, I just prepare myself for my trip to Cannes and wanted to downloaded some important files to my Notebook. So I connected the Notebook with my GPRS phone and was surprised how fast the download happened. However, it wasn't the GPRS phone which downloaded the files but the LAN card which was also plugged in. And this LAN card used my DSL line... ;-) Thank God!
But do you think I got a call from Streamgate? No, nothing... :-( Anyway -
I'm glad that it works again as you can imagine! ;-)
Cheers ~ Arne

3GSM CONGRESS: Away from my home PC until Thursday
|
|
Posted by Arne Hess - at 20:16 CET under 06 - Site News
|
Every year, the GSM community meets on its congress and exhibition, the GSM World Congress in Cannes (puh, live can be so hard ;-). Since last year, the GSM Congress is called 3GSM World Congress for good reasons as 3G is coming for sure and 3GSM is the brand name for 3rd generation networks based on the GSM standard.
This year I will also attend the 3GSM Congress again but this time I will cover the latest developments for you, the readers of Pocket PC Writer.Net. So I will go there from Monday to Thursday to find the latest gadgets and services there.

DISCONNECTED: Day four without any Internet connection
|
|
Posted by Arne Hess - at 11:45 CET under 06 - Site News
|
My all-time non favorite "Telco" and DSL provider Streamgate isn't able to reconnect me until today. Since Tuesday night I'm offline now. The customer service isn't able to provide me any help and from the technical service team I didn't got any feedback until now.
If you are a regular visitor of Pocket PC Writer.Net (and before Unwired-I.Net) you may remember the drama in summer last year when I was disconnected for whole week because Streamgate wasn't able to connect me after they got my line from my previous operator Deutsche Telekom.
Hell, seems this becomes a nightmare again and I wonder how long it takes this time to become reconnected. Also it's a "little bit" expensive to get the E-Mails via GPRS. If you live in Germany and you are looking for a DSL provider, don't take Streamgate as they are not able to provide you a minimum of competence! :-(

PPCW.N: Offline for two days now
|
|
Posted by Arne Hess - at 11:05 CET under 06 - Site News
|
Just to inform you: my DSL provider (or Deutsche Telekom who runs the line shared cables) decided to cut my DSL access again. This means currently I can not access the Internet at home. Also I'm not able to dial into an Internet Service Provider because my DSL provider, who also offers my telephone line, doesn't provides any interconnections to other networks for data calls... :-(
As soon as I'm back in the cyber world, I will be able to update PPCW.N again. Currently I'm using my Pocket PC via GPRS for E-Mail only.
Cheers ~ Arne

PREVIEW: First view of the final Compaq Wireless GSM/GPRS Pack
|
|
Posted by Arne Hess - at 21:37 CET under 06 - Site News

Thanks to Compaq - with this version - I'm allowed to speak and write about
it and I will be able to provide you a full featured review soon. :-) So stay
tuned.
As you can imagine, it will not take to long anymore that the Wireless Pack will
become available commercially. Okay, there was a (small) delay but at least -
all of us want to have final products, not becoming a Beta tester for a lot of
bucks and therefore waiting for it was worth!
Here it is my friends, the preview of the Compaq Wireless Pack. These are the
first pictures of package (find more later, including a review but tonight my
girlfriend is asking for me and she definitely will throw away the jacket if I'm
not going out with her. But might be a good test using the combo in the Munich
night life ;-)

BANDWIDTH: Ouch, I've reached the included bandwidth limit of my hosting service
|
|
Posted by Arne Hess - at 11:10 CET under 06 - Site News
|
Real bad news for me! Today I’ve checked the amount of transferred GB in January and I transferred more than included within my hosting package. In detail, I transferred 1.4 GB more which means I have to pay additional bucks, around 50 US$... :-(
This additional peak came within the last days, including a flood of visitors regarding the Fujitsu LOOX.
Anyway, thanks to some helpful guys (to be honest, not much but a hand full only), I can cover this extra charges with the PayPal donations. Thanks a lot for your donation! In the mid-term I have to think about a new model. I’m not sure if I will delete images (which is the most amount of bandwidth) incl. some step-by-step screen shots or if I reduce the news on the front page or both?
What do you think is to do to reduce the transferred data without loosing any information?
Cheers ~ Arne
