WORST CASE: My DSL provider is insolvency!
Posted by Arne Hess - at 23:37 CET under 09 - Thoughts

Hell!!! Sometimes I don't have it easy! After all the trouble I had with my DSL provider Streamgate in the past I got an E-Mail from them today which can not amuse me: The are inability to pay the bill to Deutsche Telekom which means they ran into the insolvency. They try hard (as they told in the E-Mail) to provide a rest of service for the customers, however - 30 minutes after I got the E-Mail all lines seems to be capped by Deutsche Telekom. No more telephone, no more Internet, nothing... :-(

The hardest thing for me (and maybe for you) is that it will takes at least 6 weeks that I get a new connection from an operator. That's how long it takes here in Germany... THAT'S CRAP!!! HELP!!! :-(

In the quintessence it means that I will be very limited in updating PPCW.N as I have to use GPRS for my Internet connection within the next 6 weeks... Oh hell - could something be harder? My GSM/GPRS operator VIAG Interkom will become rich through me. :-( Good for mmO2, bad for me...

Cheers ~ Arne

PS: I uploaded this message from the public W-LAN of the Munich Airport. How I will handle it in the next 6 weeks, I don't know! :-(

COMPAQ WIRELESS PACK: Ash on my head! :-(
Posted by Arne Hess - at 00:09 CET under 09 - Thoughts

Some guys are really waiting for my review of the Compaq Wireless GSM/GPRS Jacket and you are right, I'm heavily delayed! :-( I'm really sorry for this and the only excuse I can give you is that I had some real busy weeks (from business and private side) behind me.

But I promise you to write the review within this week and will publish it within this week too!

INTERVIEW: PPCW.N interviews Martin Croome, European General Manager Socket
Posted by Arne Hess - at 23:43 CET under 09 - Thoughts

On Pocket PC Writer.Net I will not give you the latest views of myself only but also the views of the insiders of the wireless industry. Therefore I'm interview Martin Croome, European General Manager, Socket Communications; I met at the 3GSM Congress in Cannes last week. Martin gave me the opportunity for an interview where we was talking a about everything related to Bluetooth, SD and CF cards.

Enjoy ~ Arne

PPCW.N: Martin, thanks a lot for the interview. Let us talk a about Bluetooth as technology first. Where do you see Bluetooth today?

MARTIN CROOME: Today, Bluetooth is a connectivity tool between mobile devices like PDAs and mobile phones. It is the perfect technology for connecting these devices without the hassle of using cables anymore. However, I see a demand for connections to Bluetooth Access Points too in the near future.

W-LAN SECURITY: Open networks on the 3GSM Conference
Posted by Arne Hess - at 20:25 CET under 09 - Thoughts

Andy from Pocket PC Thoughts wrote some days ago about a program for the Pocket PC called Mini Stumbler: "Wireless networks are not safe. That's the point the people behind the Network Stumbler want to make. The software can detect open WiFi networks, and makes it really easy to use the connectivity they provide. Mini Stumbler is now released, and runs of Pocket PCs."

I know, the unsafe Wi-Fi networks are one of Andreas favorite topic and he is right to hightlight this again and again. However, you can use a minimum of security if you encrypt your Wi-Fi network and 802.11b supports this with up to 128 Bit. But what I've seen on the 3GSM Congress in Cannes this week was far away of any network security! A lot of booth's seems to used W-LAN for their presentation Notebooks and almost none of the companies used encryption! So I was able to access this networks for my Internet connection as well.

MOBILITY: The NexiCam - Digital Camera Expansion Pack for the iPAQ
Posted by Arne Hess - at 10:57 CET under 09 - Thoughts

Last night I had the chance to play a little bit with the NexiCam and I have to admit that I’m really impressed. Even if it was a little bit dark (a pub) it was nice to see how it works.

The NexiCam digital camera expansion pack for the Compaq iPAQ features high resolution 800 x 600 SVGA color for superior picture. Beside taking snapshots with your iPAQ you can also use the NexiCam for recording short videos. The built-in Type II CF card slot lets you store

NOTEBOOK: I need a new Notebook, I found it, but...
Posted by Arne Hess - at 10:49 CET under 09 - Thoughts

One pros of the Internet is that you can find what you are looking for very fast. This time I’m looking for a new Notebook with a little bit more CPU speed and support for Windows XP. My previous one, the Sony Vaio PCG-C1 was the right one but today with its 400 MHz Pentium II processor and 128 MB RAM only without XP or even 2000 support, it’s not state of the art anymore. However, what I’m looking for is a sub notebook in this size. As you know (or you imagine) I’m a highly mobile user and I don’t want to carry kilograms of hardware with me. Unfortunately the sub notebook segment isn’t a wide one in the PC industry but anyway – I made my decision: the Fujitsu P Series Notebook

CONGRESS: Going to the 3GSM World Congress mid of February
Posted by Arne Hess - at 23:19 CET under 09 - Thoughts

Anyone of you guys is going to the 3GSM World Congress in Cannes this month too? If so, let us meet. I will be there for one to two days (depending on Lufthansa ;-) and will check the latest wireless stuff there. I hope to see some new fancy Wireless Pocket PCs (perhaps also the Fujitsu Siemens LOOX with an attached GPRS module? ;-), Stinger based Smart Phone 2002s and latest developments in 3G and wireless services.

I'm going there by myself, not as an exhibitor, so you can not catch me on any booths but if you are an OEM, software- or service-developer or network operator and would like to invite me to show me your latest developments, please feel free to drop me an E-Mail. Otherwise I will keep you updated, my digital camera will be with me - for sure! :-)

Cheers ~ Arne
