WIRELESS PPC 2002: Asus to try hand at own-branded PDAs
Posted by Arne Hess - at 14:18 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Asustek Computer will launch its first own-branded PDA (personal digital assistant) with a GPRS (general packet radio service) module in mid-April, said vice-president Tzeng Chien-sheng.

The PDA will be equipped with Intel’s StrongARM 1110 processor, and run on the Pocket PC 2002 operating system. Asus will follow this up with the launch of a similar model using Intel’s new XScale processor in Q3.

Tzeng noted that not all of their new PDA models will have built-in GPRS modules, but users will be able to enjoy GPRS functions by attaching an external module to the SD (secure digital) card slot.

Intel’s new PXA250 and PXA210 XScale processors boast core computing speeds of 400 and 200MHz, respectively. With high performance ratings and low energy consumption, the XScale has already gained the support of Microsoft, as well as Taiwan’s High Tech Computer (HTC), Acer, Compal, Quanta, Wistron and PenPower Technology.

Intel has already begun volume production of the XScale processor, which it expects to see in new hand-held IAs (information appliances) by mid-2002

While AvantGo kicks its users more and more out (the latest was with dropping the support of customer channels), Mazingo takes really care about its users. The latest development was announced two days ago in San Francisco.
That's a great offer, go for it. You save more then 200 US$.

Cheers ~ Arne

SAN FRANCISCO, CA - Mazingo Network announced a new hardware and service package that will allow consumers to significantly increase the number of news feeds, movies, and TV and radio shows they can download and carry on their personal digital devices. WIRELESS PPC 2002: Audiovox announced Wireless Pocket PC
Posted by Arne Hess - at 17:04 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Audiovox just registered it’s latest product - a Wireless Pocket PC - at the FCC. The Pocket PC 2002 based PDA looks like the Toshiba Genio or Audiovox Maestro but includes a small antenna on the top and is named Thera. Because Audiovox added the HF unit to the device, this Wireless Pocket PC doesn’t includes a CF card slot anymore as the non wired version. However, like the Maestro it still includes the MMC/SD card slot and therefore it is comparable with the O2 xda. A price, RAM size, wireless mode (GSM/GPRS or CDMA 2000) and release date isn’t announced today right now.

WIRELESS: HP confirms Wireless Pocket PC in the first half, Compaq is thinking about it
Posted by Arne Hess - at 01:52 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Hewlett-Packard Co. and Compaq Computer Corp. have plans for Pocket PC PDAs with integrated voice and data. HP's device, which will support GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) networks and look much like the company's Jornada 560, will ship first in Europe in the first half of the year, officials of the Palo Alto, Calif., company said.

Compaq will be discussing plans for an integrated wireless iPaq at CTIA, but the Houston-based company also will continue to offer expansion sleds for its existing line of iPaqs, including a triband GPRS pack due next month.

Okay guys, seems to see more Wireless Pocket PCs beside the O2 xda soon. Now I'm missing a wireless device

DRIVER: New Pocket PC Keyboard driver available

I love to use portable keyboards with my Pocket PCs (specially if they my Pocket PC is online) for typing SMS messages or chatting via MSN Messenger. Unfortunately all my keyboards have the US American QWERTY layout but doesn't matter, drivers could improve this.
Think Outside and TT-Tech recently released new drivers for their Stowaway Portable Keyboard and Snap-N-Type keyboard:

PRE-RELEASE: Pocket Informant 3.0 available as public pre-release
Posted by Arne Hess - at 07:54 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

This pre-release is just that - an unfinished piece of software. Although we are nearing the end of beta testing and development, there are a few things that do not work properly, cause memory leaks, or may even damage data.

The pre-release is not a Public Beta. There will be only one pre-release of 3.0. Although we truly enjoy listening to every customer's thoughts and opinions and feature wishes, please note - we cannot reply to any of them as we would never get any development

WIRELESS PPC 2002: Update of the Jornada 568/928 with GSM and GPRS
Posted by Arne Hess - at 23:03 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

I got this picture of a Jornada "928" today. Since I was arguing the Stinger GUI of the first shots, this looks more like the kind of Wireless Pocket PC we already saw in the CES presentation.

Also this is that kind of Wireless Pocket PC GUI I already knew from the O2 xda. As far as I've heard now the "Starfighter" (which is the code name of the Wireless Jornada) is called Jornada 568, not Jornada 928. However, it could be that there are different model numbers for the different GSM (900/1800 MHz and 900/1900 MHz) versions.
