WIRELESS: "Warchalking" with hobo phil
Posted by Arne Hess - at 17:28 CET under 01 - General News

Seventy years ago, during the great depression in the United States, Hobos drew signs to indicate to each other where they could get a meal. Now, across the Atlantic in London, geeks are talking about using a similar system of chalk symbols to signal where they can get a decent wireless internet connection. and now hobo phil is here to help.

"I'm hobo phil. use the hobo application to figure out the symbols or "warchalking" so you can get on a wireless network and then test the network! I've got coyotes."

EXCLUSIVE: Latest screenshots of the Fujitsu Siemens Pocket Loox
Posted by Arne Hess - at 21:09 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Thanks to "Anonymous" I got some brand new screenshots of Fujitsu Siemens' Pocket Loox. Interesting is the speed menu which reminds on applications like WIS Bar or Compaq's iTask. The Programs doesn't seems to includes any surprises and also the Settings seems to be as we knew it from other Pocket PCs. An interesting fact here is that it seems as Fujitsu Siemens changed the icons to a Loox layout. Makes it more individual. :-) Fujitsu Siemens also added the well known "Expansion Pack Viewer" we already knew as "Expansion Pack" from Compaq.

The most interesting tool is the "Pocket Plugfree Setup" which lets you connect the Loox with different devices for applications and I wonder what the heck the "Shared Folder" is? Does it means that others could access my Loox on a defined storage location!? Sound pretty cool. Also "Access Serial Ports" sounds as other devices could access serial ports of the Loox. Might be the long awaiting connection sharing...

All together this screenshots looks pretty interesting and I'm just awaiting the availability; which should happened - according to different serious sources - within the next 4 weeks.

Cheers ~ Arne

MOBILE COMPUTING: Details about the Antelope Mobile Computing Concept
Posted by Arne Hess - at 12:24 CET under 01 - General News

As I've mentioned four weeks ago, Antelope Technologies licensed IBM's MetaPad showcase.

Now, the nice folks from Antelope sent me a presentation, which explains the concept in more details and it's pretty cool. With the MCC core unit you can use it as PDA as well as a Notebook or even as a wearable PC. It's up to you to built the ideas.

Enjoy the slides and let me know what do you think of this kind of concept. For me it would be interesting to use it as a kind of Tablet PC and Notebook. However, it can not replace a PDA how we know it today but that's also not the target market of Antelope.

COLUMN: How you Pocket PC helps you stay informed during the Football World Cup
Posted by Arne Hess - at 13:59 CET under 09 - Thoughts

Some days ago, I told you about the Mazingo World Cup channel, where you get the latest information of every match synchronized. If you are looking for a more up-to-date source, maybe you should check if your operator provides a PDA optimized portal too!

O2 Germany does it; for the launch of the xda, O2 - DE built also a pretty cool mobile portal, which is fully optimized for Pocket PCs. One highlight for me is the "kicker" Ticker. kicker is Germanys largest Football magazine and together with O2 they provide an online issue, optimized for the Pocket PC. So this ticker is more than interesting as - "thanks" to all the TV licenses - I'm not allowed here in Germany to watch every game in the free TV but on the pay TV only. As I don't have a pay TV decoder, I missed some games or even if I'm on work I can not watch every game.

REVIEW: Option GlobeTrotter GSM/GPRS PC card
Posted by Arne Hess - at 20:29 CET under 08 - Reviews

As most of you know I'm a wireless guy and therefore I'm always looking for GSM and specially GPRS devices. Thanks to Option I got its GlobeTrotter PC card for testing. In general, the GlobeTrotter card is pretty well known in the Pocket PC/iPAQ community as the whole technology of the Compaq Wireless Pack is identical with the GlobeTrotter because Option provides the GSM/GPRS hardware for the sleeve.
But while you can use the Wireless Pack with your iPAQ only, the Option solution gives you the possibility to use it with different Pocket PCs like the HP iPAQ series or the Casio E-200 (both needs an additional PC card jacket) as well as with your Notebook. This maybe makes the card more interesting for many users than the iPAQ Wireless Pack only.

PREVIEW: Pocket Presence Running Voice GSM 2.0 [UPDATE: 11.06.02]
Posted by Arne Hess - at 14:14 CET under 08 - Reviews

More than 12 months ago, Pocket Presence introduced the first version of Running Voice GSM, a GUI for Pocket PCs which lets you control your GSM devices. At that time it was mostly interesting for the Nokia Card Phone 2.0 which worked - thanks to Nokia's CE driver - also with Pocket PCs. Later with Running Voice 1.1.1 it became also interesting for Bluetooth enabled phones as it lets you also control you mobile phone wireless - without any cable connections or instable infrared connectivities.

Now Pocket Presence published the first Beta of the follower, Running Voice GSM 2.0 and I had the chance to give it a closer look during the last couple of days.

What's new in Running Voice 2.0
First off all a lot of things in the background changed, even if the front-end - the GUI - still looks more or less like Running Voice GSM 1.1. So please have a look for the functional overview of Running Voice at my previous review, where I explain all the front-end functionalities which aren't changed at all with version 2.0.

GPRS ROAMING: The Vodafone Omnitel GPRS promotion in Italy
Posted by Arne Hess - at 20:20 CET under 09 - Thoughts

Okay - I have to admit that I'm a GPRS junkie. ;-) So when I was in Italy I thought that I should give the local cellular networks a closer look. Because my O2 - DE GPRS service doesn't works in Italy (because the missing GRX - GPRS Roaming Exchange) I bought a prepaid card from Omnitel. The clou was that Omnitel has a promotion until end of June with "all you can surf" (from the Omnitel website):

Are annoying GRATIS in Internet with GPRS" that concurs to be annoying gratis in Internet and without limits of traffic until to the 30 june, acquiring one paper services from 10,33 euro and without other costs added to you.

WORLD CUP: Mazingo Football World Cup channel saved my holidays

When I was in Italy last week, I've tried to follow as many games as possible. At least I'm an European an therefore - for me - the Football World Cup is the most important sport event this year. While I've tried to see most games life on TV (in different very nice bars with a good cup of Cappuccino for sure) I've missed some games for also. In that moment, Mazingo saved my days as the "Portable WorldCup" channel is available now as a premium Mazingo channel and provides you game highlights as well as statistics and - that's pretty cool - exclusive pictures.

Friends of PPCW.Net! I'm signing off now for one week of vacation on the beautiful Largo di Garda in Italy! Also my girlfriend needs some devotion from time to time, so I will not be connected. I will enjoy just the Vino, Past, Sun and Water - but not without my Pocket PC. It's loaded with some cool MP3s (no eBooks, I prefer paper books) and the required maps as I don't have a navigation CD-ROM from Italy on my car, so my Pocket PC have to navigate me from the German border.

An important note for PPCW.Net: I will not be able to reply on any mails or Forum questions until next Monday. Also I disabled the comment function - I'm sorry for that but because there is to much spam on the Net and to many people abuse functions like that, I have to do this while I'm not able to track the posts. Sorry but I'm sure you understand this as I want to keep the quality of PPCW.Net for you too! Also I will not verify any stories for the next 7 days so please be patient and be back in one week as I will use the time in Italy for some reviews and thoughts I have which I will post next week.
