SPEED: How fast is GPRS and what's the maximum today you can reach
Posted by Arne Hess - at 16:16 CET under 09 - Thoughts

I had a lot of discussions in the past with friends, co-workers and Pocket PC enthusiasts about the new Pocket PC Phone Edition and GPRS. While GPRS wasn't interesting for too many peoples until today because it could be used with a Notebook or WAP only, it becomes more and more interesting now because it's the bearer service used on the o2 xda or the T-Mobile Phone Edition. However, for most of you it seems that GPRS is still a secret in the ways how it works and how fast it could be. So here is more background information for you to understand GPRS better and therefore understand better what a Phone Edition Pocket PC is able to deliver or even not:

GPRS works with 2 components: the Coding Schemes (up to 4) and the Time Slots (up to 8 while 8 is the maximum a GSM/GPRS Base Station supports; doesn't matter if it is voice or data).

PREVIEW: Introducing the Logitech io personal digital pen
Posted by Arne Hess - at 21:46 CET under 08 - Reviews

It writes as well as any ballpoint, but also permanently records all your ideas, sketches, and notes:

  • Digitally capture handwritten emails, Post-it Notes, and more
  • Handwrite appointments and action items into Microsoft Outlook or Lotus Notes
  • Keep all your information organized in one place on your PC.

With the Logitech io pen, users can easily share, store, organized and retrieve their handwritten information by simply writing with ink on paper the way they have for thousands of years.

An optical sensor embedded in the pen captures the handwritten images, storing up to 40 pages in memory.

This captured digital information can then be transferred into the PC by synching the pen via a USB cradle. The Logitech io solution offers total mobility, since all that is necessary to carry is the pen and a digital paper notebook.

PPCW.NET: Back in Town - back on Duty
Posted by Arne Hess - at 14:11 CET under 06 - Site News

You may wonder why there wasn't any news the past days; well it was because a spontaneous trip to Italy. I was in Tuscany and Rome for some days and visited my fellow MVP Giorgio Cifani in northern Italy where I also met my fellow MVP Marlof Bregonje. We had a great day yesterday at Giorgio's house with a very tasty BBQ and for sure some Pocket PC discussions... ;-)

Beside this I've also tested my GPRS enabled Omnitel SIM card (you may remember the success less trial in June) and this time it worked great - more or less. But I will cover this with a separate column later.

In Tuscany I've visited Siena (a really nice Gothic city where I will upload two Today Themes later too with pictures I made there) and in Rome I've seen the Pope in the Vatican. Okay, I'm a Protestant so I'm not related to the Catholic Church but it's always interesting to see someone like the Pope face to face.

Posted by Arne Hess - at 18:06 CET under 01 - General News

Woohoo, I found a solution which makes my Internet access faster ;-):

Lately it seems that everybody is "getting online" and "surfing the web." Never before has technology allowed so much information to be accessible to everybody at one time. Though more often than not, the majority of your time online is spent waiting. Waiting for pages to load and files to transfer. It is estimated that in Europe, several billion hours were wasted last year, as people waited for web sites to load.

The waiting must stop. At last we have created the final solution. Our programmers and surfers here at ohoh.nl have been working overtime to bring you a ONE TIME DOWNLOAD. At last you can have the entire internet on your hard drive, at your fingertips, any time, day or night.

PPCW.NET: Lack of news today because of heavy PHP/MySQL coding
Posted by Arne Hess - at 18:18 CET under 06 - Site News

Don't expect any news today. Yesterday evening I've decided to redesign/redevelop the Wireless Edition of PPCW.Net (mobile.ppcw.net). Which means for me as a non-developer taking the code from my existing Content Management System/MySQL database and trying to understand. After I got the meanings of the database (well, understanding a database shouldn't be the big deal ;-) I've entered the world of PHP again...
This is even harder but I'm on a good way I think. I will completely redesign/reedit PPCW.Net Wireless (thanks to Calin Brandabur for giving me some hints if I don't know how to do what I want to do ;-) and yes - the first result looks pretty promising, at least for me:

What I try to improve now is the availability of articles - not like in the past where you get access to the latest 10 stories only. At least

Have you ever thought about sharing your Pocket Contacts, Calendar entries or Tasks with others as you used to do this with Outlook but now with your Pocket PC? You don’t have to wait to long anymore to enable this feature on your Pocket PC Phone Edition.
V2R’s Outlook2SMS works pretty easy through the SMS bearer channel as it takes the most important parts of your Calendar entries, Contacts and Tasks to be send from one Phone Edition to another one (both Pocket PCs have to run Outlook2SMS for sure) with only one SMS message.

Because of the massive spam E-Mails I receive every day, I've removed the PPCW.Net E-Mail addresses from the site - sorry. However, if you want to contact PPCW.Net you can still use the "Contact PPCW.Net" form from the top bar for all kind of general inquiries and questions or just use the "author form" by clicking the author name on the top of every message.
I hope this helps me to reduce the spam in my Inbox and sorry for all you guys out there who have to use a form now to drop me a message.

Cheers ~ Arne
