REVIEW: BoxWave miniSync USB Charger and Synchronization Cable
Posted by Arne Hess - at 14:29 CET under 08 - Reviews

Synchronization and specially charging of your Pocket PC is always critical and while all Pocket PCs includes a synchronization cable and a charger, mostly you have to carry two accessories with you to synchronize your Pocket PC with your Notebook and charge it after a working day in the hotel.
Thankfully a lot of 3rd party companies closed the gap with releasing integrated sync and charge USB cables. One of the most interesting solutions comes from BoxWave - its miniSync sync and charge cable.

BoxWave's miniSync is compact and its extendable and retractable cable allows it to be organized. When it's retracted, it won't become a tangled mess however you carry it.

Last week I wrote about the availability of the Eten 600 Pocket PC Phone Edition in Germany and today I got - thanks to consus - a reviewers device. As before with the Compaq iPAQ H5450 I've decided to upload the first pictures as a Picture Preview only.
This picture preview also includes some comparison photos between the Eten P600 and the Casio E-200 and the o2 xda. I choose the Casio because the design of both devices is pretty comparable and the xda for sure as today's state of the art Pocket PC Phone Edition.

REVIEW: 01 Communique's I'm InTouch
Posted by Arne Hess - at 13:08 CET under 08 - Reviews

While the Pocket PC did a good job of holding all my Contacts, Calendar entries and E-Mails as well as my most important files, there are some reasons where you need access to your main PC because you need a file which isn't stored on your Pocket PC or need to re-read an older E-Mail which isn't available anymore on your Pocket PC. But maybe you want to simply check if everything at home is okay.
During the past weeks I've scanned the market and found 01 Communique's I'm InTouch which nicely works with my Pocket PC through GPRS.

I'm InTouch is the latest addition to the 01 Communique line of software products. I'm InTouch is designed to let you maintain complete control over your communications system while still having the freedom of universal access to all your messages and contact manager from anywhere in the world.
The I'm InTouch Remote Access Service provides:

  • Access from any Internet PC, wireless Palm, Blackberry, Pocket PC, or web-enabled phone
  • Complete Integration with Microsoft Outlook / Outlook Express
  • Calendar and Contact Management
  • Access to the files on your PC and network drives

I'm InTouch installs a Apache Web Server on your PC because everything is Web driven. This means also, and this you have to keep in mind, that I'm InTouch isn't a remote synchronization between your Pocket PC and your Desktop PC but a real time access tool!

COMDEX: Bill Gates visited the Palm Booth
Posted by Arne Hess - at 18:14 CET under 01 - General News

Here is a pretty nice article form the Wall Street Journal - the relevant section:

Comdex Showstopper: Bill Gates

Palm Inc. expected dozens of people to throng its booth at Comdex, the giant technology trade show, in the Las Vegas Convention Center this week. But the hand-held-computer maker didn't bank on an appearance by one unexpected visitor: Bill Gates, chairman of Palm's fierce rival, Microsoft Corp.

Mr. Gates was spotted Monday afternoon wandering around Palm's booth, where it was showing off new gadgets such as its Tungsten hand-helds and its $99 Zire devices. According to people who were there, Mr. Gates, sporting a blue baseball cap and surrounded by a small entourage of burly bodyguards, stopped in the middle of the Palm booth and said, "Where's the Zire? I need to see the Zire." Later, he even dropped by the small theater Palm had set up, where a staffer was giving a demonstration of some of Palm's new devices.

REVIEW: datanywhere.com Universal Accessory Adapter iPAQ 3600 to Pocket PC Phone

The o2 xda has the same serial connector like the HP iPAQ 3800/3900 but unfortunately the pin assignment is different. Because of this you can not use HP iPAQ 3800/3900 accessories nor previous available adapters like Targus Foldable Keyboard adapter or Gomadic's iPAQ 3600 to 3800/3900 adapter.

PLATFORM: What's the Nokia Series 60 platform?
Posted by Arne Hess - at 15:06 CET under 01 - General News

Sendo has canceled all Microsoft Smartphone 2002 developments and switched to Nokia's Series 60 platform so it might be the right time to have a closer look to that Smartphone platform which seems to be a real competitor to Microsoft on the Smartphone field.

Thankfully this week was a Series 60 Platform Seminar in Munich where I was invited and so I became some better inside views:

Facts

  • Series 60 is based on the Symbian OS
  • Series 60 is owned by Nokia Terminal Software not by Nokia Mobile Phone (NMP)
  • Series 60 is licensed to NMP, Siemens, Samsung, Panasonic and now Sendo who have together a world wide market share of more than 60 %
  • Sony Ericsson's P800 Smartphone is also based on Symbian but not on Series 60
It's interesting to see that traditional GSM competitors like Nokia and Siemens (which are also competitors in the network infrastructure area) works together in the Smartphone area now.

SERVICE: o2 Germany is ready to launch MMS and on your xda it will look like this
Posted by Arne Hess - at 13:23 CET under 09 - Thoughts

o2 Germany is ready to introduce the next messaging service MMS and one of the questions I had was how it could look on a Pocket PC Phone Edition. I’m using MMS for some weeks now with a Sony Ericsson T68i with my Vodafone D2 SIM but while Vodafone doesn’t have any Pocket PCs in stock, the o2 lead product is the xda.

First of all some explanations about MMS and why it will increase your messaging experience:

Mobile Messaging is evolving beyond SMS text messaging with the introduction of MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service)

MMS delivers a total communication experience, allowing personalized multimedia content such as images, audio, text, video and combinations of these.

  • Capture and share your experiences when and wherever they happen...
  • Imagine relaxing on a sun drenched beach and being able to send a picture to your work colleagues.
  • Not sure about that dress? Get a second opinion by sending a picture of it to a friend.
The opportunities are endless!

MMS is a store and forward messaging service that allows mobile users to exchange multimedia messages with other mobile users. As such it can be seen as an evolution of SMS, with

Sendo has terminated its Smartphone development program utilising the Microsoft Windows Powered Smartphone 2002 software.

As a result, Sendo regrets to announce that it will not be shipping the Z100 Smartphone.

It has been a very difficult decision for Sendo given its leadership position in the development of smart devices. We are disappointed that we will not be able to ship the Z100 given the high level of interest shown in the device.

Although a set back, we are pleased to announce today that we have licensed the Series 60 platform from Nokia for our smartphone category. We believe this will create the opportunity for us to continue as a lead player in the

XDA: o2 is working on a 64 MB RAM xda Pocket PC Phone Edition
Posted by Arne Hess - at 10:55 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

According to mmO2's Asian website "My xda" o2 is working on a kind of xda 2 with some major enhancements to today's available xda.

This enhancements includes the GPRS speed as well as the storage capacity of the device. While the design and most common features will be unchanged the xda 2 will include:

  • GPRS: Class B, Multislot Class 8 (4R1T)
  • RAM: 64MB
Class B GPRS means that the GPRS connectivity will be idle/on hold during voice calls but automatically reactivated after the voice call. Even today's xda should be a Class B device however, you have to reconnect to GPRS after phone calls. Interesting is the Class 8 feature which increase the download speed of the device from today's 40,2 Kbit/s to 53.6 Kbit/s

POCKET LOOX: GPRS module development discontinued [UPDATE: 06.11.02]
Posted by Arne Hess - at 10:25 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

According to the news at firstloox.org, Fujitsu Siemens discontinued the development of the GPRS module:

November 5, 2002: Wireless Wide Area Networking (WWAN) capabilities for users of the Pocket LOOX PDA enable greater flexibility for data and voice connectivity through the combined solutions of a Compact Flash card and Bluetooth enabled mobile phone capabilities.

As it has been the goal to offer best solutions rather than concentrate on proprietary hardware - giving the customer real freedom of expandability - the company will focus its efforts on existing GPRS hardware solutions for data communication and no longer pursue the development of a dual band GPRS Plug-on module for data and voice communication. Without giving away the original concept of connectivity, Fujitsu Siemens Computers will offer GPRS connection in the future through two scenarios: a GPRS Compact Flash card for pure data connectivity or the combination Pocket LOOX and a Bluetooth enabled mobile phone for data and voice connectivity.

DNS: The Domain move started and PPCW.Net became unreachable [UPDATE: 06.11.02]
Posted by Arne Hess - at 10:24 CET under 06 - Site News

If you can read this, you came here through any other URL than "PPCW.Net". Maybe you've used the former one "Unwired-I.Net" or "PocketPCWriter.Net" - right? ;-)
Well, the good stuff is that PPCW.Net is still reachable through this URLs, the bad news is that PPCW.Net isn't reachable through its main domain PPCW.Net. :-(

The reason here fore is pretty easy and hope to get it fixed soon:

UPGRADE WEEK: Now my PC got an Upgrade
Posted by Arne Hess - at 18:44 CET under 06 - Site News

Wow, what a week. First I had to upgrade my whole web presence with the move to the new (dedicated) server and now my Desktop PC (my main PC) required an update. Okay, it was necessary as the system configuration was more than one year old and wasn't in best condition anymore.
One year ago I've upgraded the system from Windows ME (yes, I was running ME not 2000 ;-) to Windows XP Beta 1. Than I've installed RC2 and when Windows XP became public, I've installed the final version without removing the first 3 Windows version. :-(
Now I've decided to install Office 11 Beta 1 and I thought to myself that it might be a good idea to refresh the system in general. So far so good - going to www.bootdisk.com and downloaded a DOS based boot disk for my PC to perform the legendary:

format c:
This worked fine so far and also I got my Windows XP CD-ROM started from a system without anything else than BIOS running.
