THOUGHT: Synchronizing Mobile Devices like Mobile Phones and Pocket PCs
Posted by Arne Hess - at 16:01 CET under 09 - Thoughts

Since I'm using the Orange SPV I'm thinking more and more about synchronizing mobile devices with the data on the PC, especially about synchronizing PIM data and I wonder if I'm the only one.

Let me jump back some years ago or better 10 years back. In two days (first of February) I have the 10th year's anniversary of owning a GSM mobile phone. On February the 1st I've subscribed my first GSM contract with "unicom" (a German GSM Service Provider which is history today and since 1996 part of Talkline). When I got my first SIM card and my fist GSM phone, I found it pretty clever to store all my data like phone numbers/contact names on the SIM card because this enabled an easy exchange of the phones. Doesn't matter which phone I've used, I took all my contacts with me as they was stored on the SIM, not on the device.

CUSTOMIZATION: Playing with the Microsoft Smartphone 2002 Home Screen
Posted by Arne Hess - at 17:01 CET under 09 - Thoughts

Today I've played a little bit (to be honest 2.5 hours ;-)) with the Smartphone Home screen which is equal to the Pocket PC Today screen and includes the current network, your next appointment, etc. However, unlike the Pocket PC Today screen the Home screen is xml based which means the user can customize it by himself, without using any additional programs (but I'm sure we will see some cool 3rd party software here, which adds even more fund to the Home screen.) and I've tried to optimize my standard Home screen.

Below you see on the left the Microsoft's standard full screen which includes the past used programs on top, the network name and time plus full day events and appointments and an overview of your unread E-Mails and SMS messages (wonder why MMS isn't includes here) as well as the handset profile in the last row.

THOUGHT: Why is the SPV "Application Locked"!?
Posted by Arne Hess - at 15:01 CET under 09 - Thoughts

You might remember that I got a HTC Canary two weeks ago for a short preview and thanks to somebody (unannounced) else, I finally got a SIM unlocked Orange SPV (which includes German and English menu as well) loaned! So this gives me the opportunity to understand Smartphone 2002 better now and I also started to write some “How To's”. What I need for every step-by-step are screenshots. It makes it easier for everybody to follow the explanations and what do you think I ran into? Yes, into the certification problematic of the SPV. For the HTC Canary I used an early Beta of a well known screen snapping tool which worked great on it but I'm not allowed to run it on the SPV now due to the missing certificate! :-( It even don't require any installations since it is an executable only but this is also recognized by the SPV - so no way so far to make screen shots except using my Digital Camera.

THOUGHT: Vodafone Germany is testing its Location Based Service "Buddy Alert"
Posted by Arne Hess - at 15:01 CET under 09 - Thoughts

According to ZDNet Germany, Vodafone D2 is testing its Location Based Service "buddy Alert" now which tells you if a friend is around you. This service should work via SMS or WAP.

While this sounds like a pretty handy service, I wonder how useful it is and how many of you would use it. I mean I have often the problem (it's not really a problem but sometimes I don't like it) that my MSN Messenger logs in automatically if I boot my XP PC but now, all my buddies should know where I'm?

RETROSPECTION: My personal 2002's Tops and Flops
Posted by Arne Hess - at 15:01 CET under 09 - Thoughts

2002 is gone as well as my vacation; but I used the time between Christmas and New Year to thought about the Pocket PC tops and flops for 2002. Here is my very personal and subjective retrospection:
