RANT: And I thought it is called "Iraqi Freedom" not "Iraqi Business"
Posted by Arne Hess - at 16:48 CET under 09 - Thoughts

While the war in the Iraq is still in progress and allies soldiers and civilians are still in danger and risk their health, members of the US Congress already think about the time after the war and which cell phone system should be used in the Iraq.

Under the headline: "Congressional Lawmakers Balk At Plan To Deploy French/German Cell Phone Technology In Post-War Iraq" they published the following letter:

THOUGHT: Working wireless with GPRS
Posted by Arne Hess - at 20:16 CET under 09 - Thoughts

When I've worked the past nights on PPCW.Net, I was at my girlfriend and if you believe it or not, she doesn't has Internet access… 8O (One reason why she gets an iPAQ from me now which I will equip with the Wireless Jacket and yes, she even asked for one wireless enabled Pocket PC!)

Well, maybe that's another reason why I like to stay at her home, you really get your head free if you don't have Internet access available all the time. No Internet access available, well, it's not true since I have my Internet enabled Pocket PCs with me or at least my Smartphone. 8)

CONCEPT: IXI PMG connects your devices with the GSM/GPRS network
Posted by Arne Hess - at 13:03 CET under 09 - Thoughts

When I was in Cannes some weeks ago, I've joined a presentation by Ixi Mobile about their PMG (Personal Mobile Gateway) which is a pretty fascinating concept, based on Bluetooth.

In the center is the Ixi-Connect, which connects on one hand with the GSM/GPRS network and on the other hand with all kind of Bluetooth enabled devices - from a telephone receiver which can be used like a normal cell phone but doesn't include the wireless radio to digital cameras (I even saw a working high-resolution prototype from Sony which connected to the Ixi-Core) to pens, chat boards or whatever is connectable.

THOUGHT: Time for GSM Carriers to understand the TCP/IP world and its billing options
Posted by Arne Hess - at 15:03 CET under 09 - Thoughts

The 3GSM Congress was two weeks ago and CeBIT will start in two weeks and in Cannes we saw a lot of interesting developments for operators and I'm sure we will see interesting product announcements on CeBIT.

However, I'm still afraid that the GSM carriers still don't understand the Internet world in all its details and I'm not talking about the tech staff (these guys know how to build GSM networks, maintain GGSNs and SGSNs), no - I'm simply talking about the product managers which are responsible for the service and product designs.

I'm sure - now where we come closer to the launch of 3G networks - that we will see some introductions of streaming or download services but guys, please keep your customer in mind. GPRS is still to expensive, everywhere in the world and therefore I propose that you have a closer look how the Internet works.
