ORANGE RUMORS: SPVx to be available in April and Developers site will stay
Posted by Arne Hess - at 18:26 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Yesterday I met an Orange Insider and we discussed several topics about decertifying the SPV via OTA as well as when and where we will see the first Orange SPVx.

Here what he was able to tell me as far as he knew. But please keep in mind that Orange is a huge company and maybe not everything is known by everyone - but the good news are that this guy isn't working on the helpline, so he should know more... ;-)

Q: "Will the Orange Developer website, to decertify the SPV over the air, removed anytime or will it be locked?"

A: "My understanding is it's for Developers only but no checks are done so if a user says he's a developer then he gets to have an unlocked phone"

Q: "When will we see the 'long awaiting' SPVx released?"

Posted by Arne Hess - at 12:00 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Orange UK provides on its Developer site a way to get the SPV locked/unlocked Over the Air (OTA)

The process of unlocking the SPV involves the temporary removal of the certificates. The unlock/lock process is delivered over-the-air to the SPV.

After application development has taken place, you will need to re-lock the device and re-instate the certificates for the testing procedure to be completed. Once the device is re-locked, unsigned applications will no longer run on the device.

The process of unlocking and locking the SPV will require your personal/device information and agreement to terms and conditions.

Posted by Arne Hess - at 19:46 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

The good news came from Vision to Reality just 30 minutes ago, Beta 2/Release Candidate 1 of Caller2Picture for Smartphone is available for download through the link below!

Since Beta 1, V2R changed a lot, incl. a complete modification of the setup UI and they also added some useful things which makes me thinking that C2P is really in a RC1 stage now:

Now the C2P main screen includes a complete overview of your current contact which you can edit as well as a new menu which lets you select from where the pictures should be selected as well as giving you an overview about your currently assigned contacts and a preview window. Also quitting Caller2Picture is possible now which save a lot of memory!

It took a while for the thumb keyboard concept to win me over. But, it did and my opinion now is that any Pocket PC I use regularly must have a thumb keyboard option. However, thumb keyboards are not all alike. This review takes a look at the three I’ve been using and makes a plea to thumb keyboard designers to do a better job (and take a lesson from the defunct HP Jornada design team).

RELEASED: Spb's GPRS Monitor Version 2.0 is available
Posted by Arne Hess - at 21:03 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Spb announced today the release of Spb GPRS Monitor 2.0, a significant update to the popular software for users with wireless Pocket PCs.

GPRS is a 2.5G wireless data technology that allows users to perform a variety of functions: check email, browse the Web, use instant messaging technologies, transfer files, and much more. However, in most parts of the world, GPRS solutions are quite expensive - users pay by the megabyte (MB) for the data transfer they use. Since there are no built-in tools on the Pocket PC to help track data use, it's very easy for users to quickly use up their data allotment without knowing, and have an expensive bill show up at the end of the month.
