From the makers of the VITO ButtonMapper comes another cool product. Vito Technologies has just released their beta version of the VITO SoundEditor. The VITO SoundEditor provides a basic set of tools for sound editing. It features stylish and informative user interface and intuitive toolbar for quick access to options.

DRIVERS: Pocketop Portable Keyboard driver for xda and T-Mobile Phone Edition

I'm just working on my long time promised review of the Pocketop Portable Keyboard and was on their driver page.

Since 15th April, they also have a driver available for the O2 xda and T-Mobile Phone Edition Pocket PCs which is fully compatible and support screen rotation but unfortunately it's not clear for me which one to take as they offer two different kind of Pocket PC 2002 drivers: "PocketPC 2002 **NEW**" and "PocketPC 2002". Both includes some model names but both doesn't list the xda/T-Mobile Phone Edition.

FIX: V2R released Caller2Picture 1.00a with some fixes and improvements

WIRELESS VOIP: Xten delivers SIP-based communications to Pocket PCs

Xten Networks, Inc., recently announced the release of X-PRO, its new SIP User Agent (softphone) for Windows PCs & Wireless PocketPC/CE devices. X-PRO can be used to make free IP-to-IP calls using a service such as's Free World Dialup or can be used to make IP-to-Phone calls using a pre-paid calling service such as deltathree's iConnectHere.

Xten has also released a free version of their softphone called X-Lite. While the X-Lite may not include all the premium features of X-PRO such as conferencing and multi-proxy, it still provides the same level of call quality. Both X-PRO and X-Lite are fully compatible with other SIP User Agents including Cisco 7900 Series IP Phones and ATA 186 Analog Telephone Adapters.

PHONE EDITION: Legend to release ET180 Pocket PC Phone Edition

Chinese computer manufacturer Legend will soon release their Pocket PC Phone Edition offering. The Legend ET180 will feature a unique removable numeric keypad which will be a first for the Pocket PC. Sources state that it will be powered by a 400MHz Intel X-Scale processor and will have 32MB of ROM and 64MB of RAM. It will run on the Pocket PC 2002 Phone Edition OS.

The unique removable keypad is said to give the user improved handling experience as the ET180 can be operated easily with one hand. Removing the keypad transforms the ET180 to a standard touchscreen dependent Pocket PC Phone Edition.

UPDATE: New ROMpaq for iPAQ H5450 available

HP releases its latest ROM Update for the iPAQ h5450 series Pocket PCs. This was previously released last April 17 but did not include any documentation as to what it fixes. HP has then taken it off from their Software and Drivers page only to be placed back on but this time with a corresponding Release Note.

This ROM Update however, does not include some of the fixes which were released earlier. Namely the iPAQ Pocket PC h5400 Nevo Update for English ROM Version 1.00.45, iPAQ Pocket PC h5400 Pocket Watch from Conduitsand the iPAQ Pocket PC h5400 WLAN Driver Update.

VITO Technology releases yet another application to ease contact look-up in the Pocket PC or Pocket PC Phone Edition. QuickContact offers an easy way of searching through the contacts database using the hardware buttons of the Pocket PC. A unique quick entry system is used which relies on the Pocket PC's D-Pad for navigation.

A hardware button can be assigned to activate QuickContact and the search can be initiated by using the directional pad. Pressing left or right on the D-Pad moves you from one search field to the next, while pressing up or down scrolls through the letters or the list. The action button opens the contact details.

FLASH CONTENT: FlashPack, Simplifying Content Distribution

HandSmart just released their Macromedia Flash standalone executable maker for Pocket PC called FlashPackâ„¢. FlashPackâ„¢ is a Windows based application which is used to create Flash content for Pocket PCs. What is worth noting is that it is the first to provide flash artists, game developers and content providers with the means to distribute and manage Flash based content without requiring any programming skills.

Moreover, FlashPackâ„¢ creates an .exe file from flash .swf files. This enables users to run your content directly as stand alone application and does not require running it within Pocket Internet Explorer. The end result is that the entire flash and runtime exists in a single file which proves to be a boon for both flash developers and the target users as distribution and installation of the file can be done by simply dragging the file to the device without any prior installation.

MMS VIEWER: MMS Custom View for Pocket PC 2002 Inbox

MMS messages can be easily sent from MMS compliant mobile phones to any E-Mail addresses. However, E-Mail clients don't play MMS presentations as they look on a phone.

Instead, email clients show MMS messages as regular email with attachments. MCVO allows playback of MMS messages in the Pocket PC 2002 Inbox Inbox in the same way they look on mobile phone.

PHONE EDITION: Globe Telecom releases Qtek 1010 in the Philippines

Globe Telecom recently released the Qtek 1010 Pocket PC Phone Edition in the Philippines. The Qtek 1010, based on the Wallaby Reference Design, comes with 64MB RAM. Unlike the Qtek 1010s that were previously released by other carriers, this one was made to conform with Globe Telecom's requirements.

According to Globe Telecom, they chose the 64MB version to give the user a more capable PDA & phone combo. The Qtek 1010 even has the SMS ID fix preinstalled as well as network configurations specific to Globe in the quick setup menu.

TOOL: Change the T9 language with T9 Config Utility

Based on my "How To", to change the Smartphone input language to another than the UI language, my fellow MVP Marc Zimmermann, developed a small free tool called "T9 Config Utility" which is available from Handango now:

By default, the Smartphone 2002 platform links the phone user interface language and T9 predictive text input language. For example, this linkage effectively makes writing German text with an English language phone impossible.

RUMOR: HP interested in Smartphone platform?

There is news going around that Hewlett-Packard has been scouting for smartphone manufacturers. If you remember their announcement that they were dropping their plans to produce the Pocket PC Phone Edition version of the iPAQ 5xxx range, it makes you wonder if HP would even sell a Smartphone.

But apparently, HP has shelved their Pocket PC Phone Edition plans for the MS Smartphone platform. It has been reported that HP has been inquiring about smartphone prices from several Taiwanese contract manufacturers. Those approached by HP are High Tech Computer Corp (HTC). Compal Electronics, Mitac International, Asustek Computer, Inventec Appliances and Quanta Computer.

POCKET PC: Mitac aims for 600,000 Pocket PCs

Mitac International is indeed preparing for a busy year. Expecting to ship 600,000 Pocket PCs this year, of which 30% will be own-brand models, Mitac will offer a complete PDA solution that covers the high-end, mid-range and low-end PDA markets.

Mitac has gained popularity for their launch of their Mio line of Pocket PCs last year, the Mio 528 and Mio 338. Adding also to their roster of products are the MobilePro 200e and MobilePro 300e Pocket PCs which they produce for NEC and the V35 which they produce for ViewSonic.

HTC TANAGER: Qtek to release the HTC Tanager in Sweden

INBOX FIX: Get rid of those " -1" Unread Messages from your Inbox

How many of you have ever experienced getting "-1" Unread Messages in your Inbox when in fact your Inbox has No Unread Messages or No Messages at all? I know I have experienced this occurence once and no matter how many times I reset my device, renew the partnership, or purge the Inbox, there still remains that annoying "-1" Unread Message.

Well, a fix has finally been developed. Authentic Relmerator Technology has come up with FixUnreadCount v1.0 This utility is a small 9KB exe file that fixes the unread count for every mail folder in every account on the device. This utility will detect and repair these discrepencies.

I got the following photo sent by someone anonymous (some weeks ago) which shows a Vodafone live! user interface on a HTC Canary. No more details was given, only the photo and my first thought was that it was Photoshop. SMARTPHONE: HTC on Schedule with Tanager

High Tech Computer Corp (HTC) earlier announced its plans to ship their second Smartphone 2002, the Tanager, this 2nd Quarter. The two wireless carriers, German-based carrier T-Mobile International and Filipino wireless carrier SMART Communications will be offering the Tanager which features improved ergonomics, a more functional mini-joystick, and a more user friendly keypad.

HTC is on schedule with the deliveries of the Tanager as SMART Communications launched it in the Philippines as the “SMART Amazing Phone” last February 14, 2003. The units were made available to the public as early as the first week of March.

Analysts estimate that HTC will be shipping 600,000 smartphone units this year.

Tom Grek works on a little tool which allows you to move your SMS messages from your Smartphone to Outlook on your Desktop PC:

SMS2Mail is a simple program and it seems weird that, whilst everyone has been busy writing Pacman clones etc nobody's actually sorted out this major omission from Smartphone. Essentially the program is run from the phone whereupon it converts all SMS in your Inbox to E-Mails in your outbox (on the phone). Don't worry; the SMS look the same as emails, it's just that Microsoft thought they'd give us two types of message, one of which won't sync properly.

UPDATE: DAT Group with a new version of SMS Tools

When I was on MDC last week, I also met the folks from DAT Group who developed SMS Tools (see my review here) and they gave me a new, updated version of SMS Tools.

This new version contains another great feature which isn't part of the Smartphone today: sending SMS messages in a simple and convenient way again, if it failed to send the SMS message by the first try.

HP has added the HP iPAQ Pocket PC h5400 ActiveSync Backup File Restoration Utility version 1.00 (31 Mar 03) and the iPAQ Pocket PC h5400 Battery Driver version 2.00 (2 Apr 03) to their Software and Drivers list. If you are having problems restoring from a backup made with a previous processor version or if you are having problems with the battery driver for your h5450, then it is time to take a look at these updates from HP.

Spb Software House just released an innovative way of deploying applications wirelessly. Called the Spb AirSetup, this deployment solution is aimed at developers who want to be able to distribute their application directly into a Pocket PC. Currently, the most practical method of distributing applications over the air is through CAB files.

But this approach may not be a perfect one. First of all CAB files are not compressed which means that downloads can be lengthy and expensive. MESSAGING: Jataayu MMS client for Smartphone 2002

Jataayu Software is previewing their new Smartphone MMS client here, on the MDC exhibition. The Tanager I spoke about yesterday already included the Jataayu browser so I already had the chance to give it a closer look.

Overall the general integration looks pretty nice, however it’s running as a standalone application unlike the EZOS WAP browser which is used on the Orange SPV and here we come to the bottom line, I personally don’t like to have several different applications for messaging but only one – the Inbox.

CANCELLED: NEC to pull out from the PDA market

Set back by weak sales, NEC apparently has decided to pull the plug from its PDA program in Japan. The decision may be a temporary one only but NEC made no mention as to when it will return to the PDA market. On the otherhand, NEC’s subsidiary, NEC Computer International, will continue managing the company’s PDA business in export markets and will continue selling existing PDA models like the MobilePro 200E, MobilePro 300E and MobilePro P300.

Sources said that Taiwan’s Asustek Computer has already stopped producing the MobilePro P300 for NEC. Mitac International, on the other hand, is still supplying the MobilePro 200E and MobilePro 300E for markets outside Japan.

POCKET PC: Asustek shipping Casio’s latest Pocket PC

Asus has landed a deal with Casio to supply its current E-3000 line of Pocket PCs. This may explain the striking resemblance between the latest Casio Cassiopeia E-3000 Pocket PC and the Asus MyPal A710.

Asustek Computer is expected to ship 10,000 PDAs a month for the Japanese vendor.

PHONE EDITION: xda system software upgrade for UK

The latest xda operating system ROM upgrade is now available from O2 UK. Please keep in mind that this update is for the UK version of the O2 xda only and will not work on other xdas like the German one nor on T-Mobile Phone Edition, so better don't try it.
