THOUGHT: Windows Mobile aka Pocket PC 2003 – is it worth to upgrade?
Posted by Arne Hess - at 17:03 CET under 09 - Thoughts

Sooner or later most of us will come into the situation to think about a possible upgrade of the old Pocket PC hardware from Pocket PC 2002 to Pocket PC 2003 since I'm sure many OEMs will offer an OS upgrade (one of the strength of today's Pocket PC platform over other PDA platforms).
But as it is a new license, like upgrading your PC from Windows 2000 to Windows XP in most cases you wont get it free of charge, I'm also sure so the question is - is it worth?

I'm happy enough to use Pocket PC 2003 for some weeks now and so I might can assess it today, even if Pocket PC 2003 was released today.

THOUGHT: Buying a new Notebook wireless and interactive
Posted by Arne Hess - at 11:53 CET under 09 - Thoughts

As you might remember from previous postings, my girlfriend doesn't have a PC at home right now but an iPAQ with Wireless Pack "only". However, last week we saw a pretty good offer for a HP Pavilion Notebook with Mobile AMD Athlon XP processor 2400+, 40GB HDD, 512MB DDR SDRAM, 15.0" XGA TFT screen, Wi-Fi on-board and a DVD+CD-RW combo drive in the newspaper and I suggested to pick it up for here.
Since I'm the "geek" in the family, I'm responsible for the technical details while my girlfriend has her own mind how stuff like this should looks like to fit into her apartment. Not to say that it's a design apartment but everything has to looks nice and perfect. ;-)

THOUGHT: Remote ActiveSync, the forgotten feature
Posted by Carlo Guerrero - at 13:37 CET under 09 - Thoughts

For most of us who synchronize our Pocket PCs or Smartphones to Outlook on our desktop PCs, we rely on either wired (via serial or USB connection) or unwired (Wi-Fi or Bluetooth) connections. But rarely do I hear people who actually ActiveSync their devices via modem connections. It is just too bad that this feature is almost forgotten and more or less, rarely discussed. Is it an unnecessary feature? I believe not.

Looking back at the time when I installed ActiveSync for my Pocket PC, there were several readme files in the ActiveSync folder in the desktop PC. One of them was titled ReadRAS.doc. The file contains the most basic instructions on how to create a remote AcitveSync connection to the PC. This, I had to try and have on one time or another relied on it for synchronizing critical data.

OFF-TOPIC: Sometimes you have good reasons to be proud of your Family
Posted by Arne Hess - at 19:30 CET under 09 - Thoughts

You might have noticed that I haven't posted anything since yesterday (except comments) but the reason for this is pretty easy: there is a time where everything else is more important than postings news, views and tutorials. It's the time where someone of your family is in the focus, not gadgets and technologies and this time it's my Mom.
Yesterday evening she received the "Bundesverdienstkreuz am Bande/Federal Cross of Merit" from the Federal President of Germany (not in person but he is the one who has to agree), the highest medal a civilian German can receive from the Federal Republic of Germany! :-D So you might be able to see that I'm more than proud of this honor!

My Mom got the medal for more than 25 years of honorary work in the social and political environment.

THOUGHT: Is Blackberry going the PDA way now and will RIM succeed?
Posted by Arne Hess - at 13:20 CET under 09 - Thoughts

Recently I received a press release from RIM about the release of two new Blackberry devices in Europe:

Waterloo ON - Research In Motion (RIM) today announced availability of its newest BlackBerry handhelds to mobile professionals in the United Kingdom. The BlackBerry 7230 and BlackBerry 6230 support worldwide international roaming on GSM/GPRS networks and deliver email, phone, SMS, browser and organiser applications.

The BlackBerry 7230 features a crisp, high-resolution colour screen and the BlackBerry 6230 incorporates a high-contrast monochrome screen. Both of the new BlackBerry handhelds are compact and lightweight with superior battery performance, making them ideal for mobile use.

THOUGHT: Using the Smartphone Camera on a Concert
Posted by Arne Hess - at 14:03 CET under 09 - Thoughts

Woohoo... The Rolling Stones are still the grandmasters of Rock 'n Roll! 8O You can't believe what an amazing show they performed yesterday if you haven't seen it live in concert! :-D 130 minutes finest Rock 'n Roll from the past 40 years.
However, as promised, I've had my PPCW.Net i-Mate with me and snapped some photos and videos. While the picture quality is what I've expected the videos (which also includes audio) amazed me, when I've watched them on my PC today.
Also a big fun was sending live pictures via MMS or E-Mail to friends at home and what I really love on MMS is that you can get replies just in time as well like that one from a pal... :-D

OFF-TOPIC: Tonight is the Night
Posted by Arne Hess - at 12:45 CET under 09 - Thoughts

No, tonight isn't the Pocket PC 2003 launch, this time it's completely off-topic but I'm so excited that here in Munich, tonight is the night (for me and my girlfriend): the Rolling Stones concert in the Olympic Stadium! :-D

For sure my PPCW.Net i-Mate and the clip-on camera will be with me (I don't think I can bring my Nikon Coolpix with me ;-) ) and I hope I will be able to make some good snapshot...
