UTILITY: Spb Software House released Spb Benchmark for Pocket PC
Posted by Arne Hess - at 19:15 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

June 25, 2003 - Spb Software House announces the release of Spb Benchmark 1.0, the premier benchmarking tool for measuring Pocket PC performance. Spb Benchmark combines real-world performance and battery tests with synthetic performance tests to give an accurate representation of how well a Pocket PC performs in everyday, realistic tasks.

Since the debut of the Pocket PC in April 2000, media and Pocket PC enthusiasts have had no effective way to measure Pocket PC performance. Several simplistic benchmarking tools have emerged, but most have focused on a limited range of synthetic CPU and graphics tests that have little bearing on real-world performance. Battery testing was performed through error-prone manual methods or using battery testing applications that often had unpredictable results. With the launch of Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC, the product has entered a third generation with new high-water marks for performance and reliability. Now, with Spb Benchmark, reviews will have the proper tool to truly get a handle on device performance and speak with authority, armed with hard metrics.

Guide: Temples of Taipei for Pocket PC and Macromedia Flash
Posted by Arne Hess - at 18:59 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

It's always amazing which cool stuff you can do on Pocket PC - together with Flash. Ch@rlie - a visitor from Taiwan - just pointed me to this fancy application called "Temples of Taipei" which is an interactive guide for your Pocket PC:

In the beginning, my plan was to create a tour guide for the city of Taipei. I realized that the project scope was unmanageable for one author. It also was too broad to appeal to one audience. After discussions with some American friends, the topic: Temples of Taipei was chosen because temples are popular scenic spots for most tourists in Taipei.

Microsoft defined a guideline for Palm-size PCs and Pocket PCs to locate document files under "My Documents", and this reflects to the common file dialog so that the dialog can open files only under the "My Documents" folder. tGetFile.dll circumvents this by replacing the open/save file dialog used by certain applications. Similarly, it allows Smartphone applications like the Tillanosoft Pocket Notepad to open and save text files even without the .txt file extension.
