VACATION: Signing in again
Posted by Arne Hess - at 16:53 CET under 06 - Site News

So, the summer is over now - not only physically but by vacation also and after 2 weeks of staying away from home and enjoying the last summer sun 8) in beautiful Croatia (Losinj) it's time to step back to work. :-(
A big, big thanks to Carlo for keeping PPCW.Net up to date and providing us interesting news and views.

It seems it will really become a busy fall as I've said in my previous holiday announcement and Carlo already reported about it with his great O2 xda II coverage as well as with the E-TEN P700 and 300 announcements plus we can expect more from the Smartphone front (Motorola Motorola MPx200, HTC Voyager, MiTAC 8390, etc).

XDA II EXCLUSIVE: Photos and Screen Shots - Part 1
Posted by Carlo Guerrero - at 20:27 CET under 08 - Reviews

After my 2 hour date with the O2 XDA II, I knew I needed more. I wasn't satisfied with just two hours. I neede to explore it, find out what makes it tick and confirm every information that has leaked out into the Internet. How sweet was the news when I heard that I could spend more time with the lovely O2 XDA II. Without hesitation, I asked if I could shoot the actual device and explore it. Here are the results of that last tryst with the O2 XDA II.

Of course I couldn't believe the improvements they have incorporated into the device that roughly measured similarly to the older XDA, less the antenna...

PHONE EDITION: My two hours with the XDA II.
Posted by Carlo Guerrero - at 19:19 CET under 08 - Reviews

This is definitely a device to die for. I cannot possible find the right words to describe the feeling I had when I held the O2 XDA II in my hands. It was just unbelievable. Its sleek design with the familiar satin silver finish, its now bright and adjustable screen, its fast PXA263 processor, the 128MB RAM the built-in camera, Bluetooth with headset support, the MMS client, the responsiveness of WM2003.

It was just unbelievable. My good friend from O2 dropped me a message that she was going to be in the country for a while and she had a surprise for me. Well, I was able to ring her at her hotel and she said those really sweet words. "Do you want to see the XDA II?" I just couldn't believe what I just heard, luckily I was nearby and it probably didn't take me more than 5 minutes to get to the hotel.

LOADED: Windows Mobile related Events here and there
Posted by Carlo Guerrero - at 22:10 CET under 09 - Thoughts

Well, as you might notice, there seems to be a slow down in PPCW.Net. But the truth is, there has been so many things happening. Last Thursday, a group from the MoDaCo Forum wanted to meet up and the main discussion tackled in the meeting was, "What's with the new ROMs for the Smartphone."

For those who are running the new PPCW.Net i-Mate ROM, you might have noticed that there are loads of improvements and really cool features which we've always wanted Microsoft to include in them. Well, apparently there were some which weren't even documented for us users.

PHONE EDITION: E-TEN P700 with dual expansion slots
Posted by Carlo Guerrero - at 13:13 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Probably the most powerful E-TEN offering is the P700 running on the latest Microsoft® Windows Mobile™ 2003 software for Pocket PC Phone Edition operating system. It not only adds Tri-Band GSM GPRS to a PXA255 powered device but adds two slots for both CF (Type I) and SD expansion slot offering a suite of productivity add-on devices such as a Global Positioning System, a bar code reader for inventory management, and a Wi-Fi (802.11b) for various industry applications.

While the design seems a bit on the squarish side, the lack of a protruding antenna is a welcome feature. It comes with a fairly standard 3.5in. 16-bit Transflective screen and an added option of USB Host features. A key feature on the P700 is USB connectivity, available through the provided cradle or an optional USB host cable. This gives users access to devices such as the keyboard or mouse they already use in their offices, allowing users to input extended text.

PHONE EDITION: E-TEN adds the P300 into their Pocket PC Phone Edition Line.
Posted by Carlo Guerrero - at 13:12 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

It is not so often that we see a new Pocket PC Phone Edition make it to the market. This is one of those cases when one company decides to release not one but two new Pocket PC Phone Edition devices running on the latest Microsoft® Windows Mobile™ 2003 software for Pocket PC Phone Edition operating system.

The P300 is a unique device that seems to bridge the Smartphone market and the Pocket PC Phone Edition market. The first noticeable thing about this unit is its size. It is definitely smaller than most Pocket PC Phone Edition hardware currently available. The best part of that is that with this small size, they got to fit it with a digital camera which can take pictures of up to 640x480 in resolution. A plus for this device too is the inclusion of an SDIO slot which gives the user more options in terms of expansion.

COMMENT: Guess your task feature fixed with i-Mate ROM
Posted by Carlo Guerrero - at 21:40 CET under 09 - Thoughts

Well this might have been something which I have overlooked, and probably taken for granted. The latest ROM for the i-Mate dfinitely shows significant improvements with regards to the implementation of the user interface unique to the Windows Powered Smartphones. Of course we've mentioned the obvious fixes which are a fully functional character/SMS counter and the ability to send SMS to any phone entry in th Coctacts list.

Adding the obvious power management tweaks plus the overall improvement in stability makes tis ROM a must have for every PPCW.Net i-Mate user. Well, something else seemed to have popped out from this ROM update. A buddy of mine, Norbert, who is also from the Philippines recently upgraded his ROM to the PPCW.Net i-Mate ROM and called my attention to another fix which apparently was made in this version.

The Packaging
Opening a case from Covertec is always pleasant as their attention to detail extends to the packaging; with the case arriving in a very nice presentation box - great if you are giving it as a present.

TWEAK: Using the Red-E Smartphone as a USB Modem for Notebooks
Posted by Arne Hess - at 18:26 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Some time ago, I have compiled a tutorial here on PPCW.Net about how to "setting up a GPRS connection for Win XP and USB using Smartphone 2002" and that days I've used the HTC Modem driver form my SPV and PPCW.Net i-Mate. Now, the great folks from Smartphone Thoughts tweaked that modem driver to use it with the Red-E/Compal/Microsoft Developer Smartphone as well:

Unlike the IR Port, USB Modem driver is not available with Windows install. What makes it tough is that USB modem drivers are model specific. So the SPV 100 (HTC Tanager) driver will not work for a phone based on different platform, like Everlink Red-E (SC1100 – the Microsoft Developer Kit phone) or the Mitac Mio. If you try to install Red-E USB modem using available HTC Modem driver, Windows Hardware Installation Wizard will fail to identify it.

REVIEW: Covertec Cellular Horizontal Case for HTC Canary and Tanager
Posted by Arne Hess - at 12:03 CET under 08 - Reviews

Thanks to Covertec, yesterday I've received my cellular horizontal case to be reviewed here.
If you don't know Covertec so far, they offer a wide range of accessories from PDA, Smartphone and other mobile device cases to cables and styluses.

I've asked for a leather case for the PPCW.Net i-Mate because the original case which comes with the HTC Tanagers isn't that bad - for an original accessory - but it's artificial leather only and doesn't looks that nice like real leather cases.

In the leisure time I'm often not using cases for my phones or Pocket PCs but while traveling or wearing a suit I prefer to have my Smartphone stored in a belt case. It looks better and you know where to put it in. So especially if you wear a suite, the original case might be not good enough for you and therefore alternatives are welcome.

Okay - I have to admit that this is a super high level question and topic but I hope that some of the PPCW.Net visitors and readers can answer this.

Some users from different GSM/GPRS carriers reported in several web boards (like andrew.j here in the PPCW.Net Forum) that GPRS attach disturbs the basic GSM functionalities like receiving calls or SMS:

THOUGHT: The good, the bad, the cab or how to screw up your phone
Posted by Arne Hess - at 08:30 CET under 09 - Thoughts

Yesterday evening I've updated my daily PPCW.Net i-Mate to the recently released PPCW.Net i-Mate ROM update and as with every Pocket PC and Smartphone updates - it's completely erasing all data from your device - similar to "format C:" on your PC.
While the update process went well (normally, if you do everything as described the update shouldn't went wrong anyway) and after such an update you have to install all files, apps and programs on your device again.

Normally this isn't a big deal. If the applications you are going to install came with a PC .exe you can simply select them from ActiveSync again.
