HARDWARE: Mitac to release first GPS enabled Pocket PC 2003 called Mio 168
Posted by Arne Hess - at 13:14 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

On 26 November, Taiwanese Mitac held a product launch for the Mio 168 at Victoria Plaza in Taipei's renowned Breeze Center shopping mall. The new GPS-enabled device is a new entry in MiTAC's lineup of handheld communications devices. The product launch featured MiTAC-Synnex Group chairman Matthew Miau; PC Home Group and iSurvey chairman Jan Hung-tze; Eddie Wu, Senior Director OEM Department of Microsoft Taiwan Corporation; and executives from Family Mart, a sales partner for the Mio 168.

The Mio 168's launch marks an important milestone in MiTAC's efforts in the consumer electronics market. Breaking from the "geeky" image associated with traditional 3C high-tech devices, the Mio 168 emphasizes lifestyle integration and personalization. It aims to be an easy-to-use, time-saving, portable, and reliable tool for street navigation, improving the quality and enhancing the enjoyment of driving, travel, recreation and other aspects of the mobile lifestyle (M-life).

INSIGHT: The truth about the HTC Himalaya USB (de-)charging problem
Posted by Arne Hess - at 16:59 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Following last weeks news that the Boxwave miniSyc cable for xda II is available now and the discussion in the comments and the forum if a HTC Himalaya can be charged by USB I received further news!
According to HTC there is actually no difference in the pin structure of the HTC Himalaya to the previous HTC Wallaby (xda 1)! However, the Himalaya seems to have a bug which HTC actually is correcting.

The bug seems not to allow the device to be charged with low amperage power sources such as through the USB port! This was an early bug found through Microsoft own development with the device, and the fix corrects the low current charging problem. HTC has corrected this problem for some by providing a fix to update their software.

INSIGHT: The truth about the program limitation on the HTC Himalaya platform
Posted by Arne Hess - at 16:35 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Maybe you've also read the rants that the new i-Mate Phone Edition/xda II/MDA II isn't able to handle larger applications and closes other programs in the background if you open a new one. In fact this statement is wrong!

The real problem is a different one and it is because the Windows CE platform isn't able to handle more then 32 processes simultaneously! 8O This is - according to my sources (which I also already get confirmed from other sides) - a design limitation which already was introduced with Windows CE 1 and never were expended - even not with today's Windows  CE 4 platform.
