HONOR: PPCW.Net recommended by Microsoft's Windows Mobile site
Posted by Arne Hess - at 17:25 CET under 09 - Thoughts

Normally I don't like this "I was recommended here and linked there" game but I take these days off from regular work to scrawl a little bit though the web to check out pages I haven't checked for longer time because I was too busy during the past months. :-( One of the sites I've visited in depth was Microsoft's previous "PocketPC.com" which is its Windows Mobile site now. If you are a long time reader of PPCW.Net, you might remember that I was a contributing author for Microsoft's PocketPC.com, when it was launched on April 19, 2000 - together with the introduction of the first Pocket PC series.

STAFF: Join the PPCW.Net Editorial - looking for new Contributors
Posted by Arne Hess - at 16:18 CET under 06 - Site News

If you like PPCW.Net and it's one of your favorite wireless Pocket PC and Smartphone sites, why not joining our team of editors? :-D
For the new year I'm looking for one to two volunteering contributors for PPCW.Net. One for Pocket PC news and/or reviews and one for Smartphone news and/or reviews as well as one or two moderators for the PPCW.Net Forum.
As you know - PPCW.Net is one of the strongest growing wireless Pocket PC and Smartphone sites since 1998 and there is so much stuff to cover today that it becomes too much for Carlo and me only (unfortunately David isn't currently able to continue his contribution because of his regular job).

So if you feel the wireless Pocket PC and Smartphone passion too I would be happy to work with you as a contributing editor of PPCW.Net. :-)

STANDBY: Does the SD card drains your SPV E200 battery?
Posted by Arne Hess - at 14:44 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

There is an interesting thread running over at MoDaCo which is worth to read. It's about the standby time of HTC's Voyager (aka Orange SPV E200, i-Mate Smartphone2) and I couldn't believe it when I read it first but it seems to be true:

The main battery drainer of the Smartphone isn't Bluetooth at all but it's the SD/MMC card you might use with your device. lutzh wrote:

THOUGHT: Being disconnected because a Network failure
Posted by Arne Hess - at 13:52 CET under 09 - Thoughts

Hell, yesterday a HLR in Germans O2 network dropped out because an outage (and also the USV dropped out because the outage was too long) and in these moments you see how addicted the world is to mobile communication.
The HLR (Home Location Register) is the place where carriers handles your contract (said simplified) and if a HLR drops, the network isn't able to handle your SIM card correct which means you get "network denied" because your are unknown for the network.

I was on the way to the local tax office and wanted to discuss some stuff with my girlfriend while I was driving (I'm not that good in this tax stuff but my girlfriend is) and can you imagine how I felt not being able to speak with her? Damn... :-(

UPDATE: HTC is working on a Bluetooth Serial fix for its Himalaya Phone Edition
Posted by Arne Hess - at 12:44 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Good news reached me this morning regarding the missing Bluetooth serial port support of HTC's Himalaya Phone Edition (aka O2 xda II/T-Mobile MDA II).
As you might remember the missing serial profile prevents from connecting the Himalaya to other Bluetooth accessories which requires the serial profile - like Bluetooth GPS receivers.
I've recently reported about a workaround from Tobias Waldvogel, called "Pocket Bluetooth Tools" which fixed this problem. However, also HTC is working on a solution as you can see on the following screenshots:

REVIEW: Piel Frama HTC Himalaya Leather Case
Posted by Arne Hess - at 15:27 CET under 08 - Reviews

While most Pocket PCs and Smartphones are delivered with a case, these original cases are mostly pretty basic - made of artificial leather or plastic and also the functions of these cases are basic.
So it might be a good idea to watch out for an alternative case for your Pocket PC - either because you want something nicer which better fits to your style or you want something more usable.

Spanish Piel Frama recently released its long awaited genuine leather case and they was nice enough to send me its black cow skin leather case for a review on PPCW.Net. This case fits with every HTC Himalaya - doesn't matter if it is the O2 xda II, T-Mobile MDA II, i-Mate Phone Edition or Qtek 2020.

DEVELOPMENT: Bluetooth audio splinters
Posted by Arne Hess - at 17:30 CET under 01 - General News

Hmmm... This EE Times article doesn't sounds that good and reminds me on my previous Bluetooth experiences with my new Sony Notebook. Sounds a little bit as Bluetooth kills itself now!?

Computer and consumer engineers are taking separate paths to delivering audio over Bluetooth, raising the possibility of incompatible wireless MP3 players, headsets and speakers. The split comes as Bluetooth gains traction in its core market of cellular handsets and as it marshals forces for a next-generation spec that could deliver megabit data rates along with multimedia.

REVIEW: ETEN P300 Pocket PC Phone Edition
Posted by Carlo Guerrero - at 18:39 CET under 08 - Reviews

The Eten P300 is probably the most affordable Pocket PC Phone Edition right now running on the latest Windows Mobile 2003 Software for Pocket PC. Did Eten cut any corners to get the price down or is the very attractive price tag too good to be true? Read on and find out.

I must admit, I am a sucker for new stuff and it was very hard to resist getting my hands on an Eten P300 when I got the news that it was locally available (here in the Philippines). The price was at first quite surprising, being priced at nearly half that of the XDA II and about 2/3 of the original XDA, I started wondering if there was anything suspect about this device.

THOUGHT: How much is Bluetooth a standard - if...
Posted by Arne Hess - at 18:42 CET under 09 - Thoughts

companies like Sony do their own stuff just to protect their product range? As you remember I bought a new Notebook which also includes Bluetooth now. One reason to buy a Notebook with Bluetooth was - for sure - to use Bluetooth with other devices (at least that's what Bluetooth was created for - isn't it Mr. Sony ;-))
While my Notebook works as a beauty to make a GPRS dial-up connection through my PPCW.Net i-Mate Smartphone2 (aka Orange SPV E200/HTC Voyager) this Bluetooth Sony software on the Notebook doesn't want to work as a serial connection with ActiveSync. While I first thought I'm to dumb, a Google search offered me some hints and the most important result is I'm not alone - as I found out at Geekzone:

THOUGHT: To synchronize or not to synchronize? For sure but how?
Posted by Arne Hess - at 15:09 CET under 09 - Thoughts

Well, this topic is hitting me around once or twice a quarter - minimum. It's about synchronizing all your devices to have everything up to date and it's a multi-device question. And it's a pain, every time I think about...
Why it is hitting me again? Because of my new Notebook I got yesterday but it covers multi facets: Desktops, Notebooks, Pocket PCs and Smartphones. And all I'm writing about now is for consumers, freelancers, etc - I'm not talking about corporate environments where you might use Microsoft Exchange or other solutions.

First of all I have to explain that my PC is running 24 hours, 7 days a week thanks to a reliable DSL provider which gives me access with 1024/256 KBit without any disconnects after 24 hours or other annoying stuff - so my PC is "always on" and even if it doesn't have a fixed IP address you can use services like Dynu.com to get a subdomain matched to your current PC IP. DSL is one of the strong growing technologies in the IP environment and I'm not the only one anymore who is always on - I'm sure.
