REVIEW: Globalsat BT308 Bluetooth GPS
Posted by PPCW.Net Editori - at 17:01 CET under 08 - Reviews

Contributed by Helio Diamant, Editor-in-Chief Pocket PC Freak

For the last months I have been dealing with my curiosity on the following issue: why did HP choose the device from Globalsat to sell as an OEM under the name IPAQ GPS?

Knowing HP for some time, already, I was quite sure that whatever led them to Globalsat was more than a simple price issue. So what would be the special characteristics that brought them to be HP's choice?

In order to check that out, I've contacted Globalsat and very kindly and quickly they've sent me a review unit for checking.

REVIEW: ETEN P700 Bluetooth Pocket PC Phone Edition
Posted by Carlo Guerrero - at 21:25 CET under 08 - Reviews

I recently had the opportunity to test the ETEN P700 BT and what great timing it was since I was on my way to a four day photography assignment in Cebu to cover the Sinulog Festival. This meant that I would be able to get to maximize the P700's communication capabilities on the field. I'm sure a lot of people have been waiting for this review.

First thing's first. When I received the unit I obviously got it up and running, charged the battery, photographed it, and then put it to the basic tests first. It seemed to be stable and quick...

PHONE EDITION: Orange UK gets their own Himalaya
Posted by Carlo Guerrero - at 15:48 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Our friends at MoDaCo were quick to see this. Orange UK now has their own Himalaya Pocket PC Phone Edition. Dubbed the SPV M1000, the O2 branded Himalaya is similar to the O2 XDA II and PPCW.Net i-Mate Phone Edition and since November 03 already available from Orange Denmark as as "Orange SPV 2020".

It is nice to see that more and more carriers are now carrying the Himalaya based Pocket PC Phone Edition. The SPV M1000 may slightly differ with the Orange specific applications and Java applications which apparently have been preloaded into it. Orange states that some of their services which they are offering with the SPV M1000 may not work outside of the UK.

UPDATE: Pocket PC Bluetooth Tools for HTC Himalaya
Posted by Arne Hess - at 20:34 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

In December I've reported about "Pocket PC Bluetooth Tools" for the HTC Himalaya platform and since the first version, it made some serious progress I want to follow-up now.

Pocket Bluetooth Tools adds the missing Bluetooth functions to the HTC Himalaya Phone Edition which was pretty weak with the first ROM but updated with the later released ROM update. However, this Bluetooth implementation is far away from a perfect solution and therefore Pocket PC Bluetooth Tools still has its right to exist:

The current available version 1.0.1.2 from 11.1.2004 includes:

PREVIEW: Xetra xBar 2.0 Beta for Smartphone
Posted by Arne Hess - at 15:24 CET under 08 - Reviews

Xetra, the developer of xBar was kind enough to send me a Beta version of his xBar 2.0 Beta (RC). And I have to admit that I already fell in love to xBar since the first 1.0 Beta; which is another reason why it also received the PPCW.Net Editors Choice.

What is xBar in general? It's a graphic oriented application manager (I wouldn't call it task manager only) for Smartphones which lets you switch between tasks and close running tasks/applications as well as it provides you information about the memory used as well as about your battery status and the current temperature.

DEVELOPMENT: Opera to solve site rendering problem for medium-sized screens
Posted by Arne Hess - at 14:28 CET under 01 - General News

Oslo, Norway - Jan. 20, 2003 - After having revolutionized how people interact with their data-enabled phones with the introduction of Small-Screen Rendering (SSR) technology in 2002, Opera Software today unveiled Medium-Screen Rendering (MSR). While SSR does a great job in generating a user-friendly version of Web pages for today's smartphone-sized screens, it is not a perfect solution for larger screens. Until now, devices ranging from PDAs used in "landscape mode" to low-resolution TV screens have not had a satisfactory way of rendering Web pages. MSR addresses all these mid- to top-tier devices, delicately squeezing content to fit the screen, without having to resort to horizontal scrolling or zooming. Opera's breakthrough has been met with enthusiasm from the industry, and MSR has already been delivered to several vendors. Products that include MSR will be announced in the near future.

This is something for the weekend and for the developers. I just had a chat with Guillaume from GpsPasSion and we wondered, why we still don't have any basic GPS applications for the Smartphone? Something basic like "JGUI's Where Am I" for Pocket PCs:

MULTILINGUAL: Microsoft Smartphone 2003 now with 10 T9 languages
Posted by Arne Hess - at 14:08 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

I often read in the newsgroups, forums and by E-Mail the question from international users if there is a way to get this or that T9 language file for a Smartphone because until today the support of international languages is pretty limited.

If you are not a Smartphone user so far the problem with Smartphone 2002 is that it contains 4 languages only (sometimes maybe 5) and this user interface languages are linked to the T9 input languages. In fact it means if your UI is English, also your T9 input method is English. Anyway - this was tweaked some time ago but nevertheless - as good this tweak worked, as long as your device already contains your favorite language, there is still no way to add a different language-set for T9 if you are using another language then the pre-installed ones.
Also it wasn't possible to change the language within creating a SMS message which was inconvenient at all and not state of the art for today's mobile phones!

However, it becomes better now! :-) With the latest official ROM I received today for the i-Mate Smartphone2, Smartphones now supports much more languages and you can change between the languages even while you are in the text mode! :-)

Socket Communications, Inc. today announced the first battery-powered cordless 56K modem for PDAs. The Socket Cordless 56K Modem with Bluetooth Wireless Technology allows users the freedom and mobility to access the Internet or E-Mail through a telephone from any Bluetooth enabled device that supports a Dial-Up Networking (DUN) profile, such as Pocket PCs, Windows Notebooks and Palm devices - without having to be tethered to an analog phone line and electrical outlet.
