3GSM LIVE: Still waiting - no Motorola confirmations so far
Posted by Arne Hess - at 13:32 CET under 09 - Thoughts

So far no news about the expected Motorola Pocket PC Phone Edition and Smartphone because the exhibition is opening at 2 PM for visitors and press; before there is no chance to enter it... Therefore I still have to wait 50 minutes too check what's finally up now. Also Motorola is holding their press conference this evening and therefore insiders don't expect to see anything before or even before Microsoft's press conference tomorrow morning...

Talking about insiders - just met my old Norwegian pal Jørgen Sundgot from infoSync and Rich Brome from phonescoop. These kind of conferences and congresses are always geek meetings also... ;-)

FRUSTRATING: SFR's HotSpot Wi-Fi down now
Posted by Arne Hess - at 16:18 CET under 09 - Thoughts

Okay SFT, this becomes annoying for me now. First you rip-off 80 € for a three days Wi-Fi access in Cannes here and now you shut down your network?
After I bought my access, it worked pretty good, as I've written here - but now only the network is available but the DHCP server isn't working anymore while my 72 hours counting back... :-(
Thankfully, Windows XP (as well as Pocket PC 2003) makes it easy to find networks and here, where I stay now (it started to rain outside) I found 8 Wi-Fi networks while 2 are open and accessible. :-) Okay, than I have to use one of these available but I'm still "not amused" that I've paid for something which isn't working anymore...<

3GSM LIVE: Arrived safely in Cannes - blogging has started
Posted by Arne Hess - at 11:12 CET under 09 - Thoughts

All right, after I caught my 7 AM "red eye" flight from Munich to Nice, I recently arrived in Cannes. Weather isn't that sunny as I hoped (please cross the fingers with me that it becomes better) but if you come from the winter (around 0° C) these 10 - 15° C here are pretty warm and spring for me! :-)
Right from now, my live photo blog from the 3GSM World Congress in Cannes opened and I already uploaded some photos with my i-Mate Phone Edition through GPRS. Not to say that uploading files via GPRS takes age (most GPRS terminals supports a maximum of 2 slots for sending which is around 19 Kbit only) and to minimize GPRS roaming costs I bought a Wi-Fi voucher for the local HotSpot, provided by SFR (the largest Telco here in France). Well, a 3 days voucher costs 80 €! 8O No wonder, Wolfgang have mixed emotions about Wi-Fi hotspotting abroad but at least I was able to buy it online with my Credit Card instead of searching for a local voucher seller! :-)

THOUGHT: A new memory card is hitting the customers - miniSD
Posted by Arne Hess - at 15:53 CET under 09 - Thoughts

With the awaiting introduction of the Motorola MPx220 Smartphone, users will also meet a new storage card type. After PCMCIA, CF and SD card, now we will get the miniSD card. So time to learn more:

The miniSD card, is a new thumbnail-sized flash memory card that is designed to meet the needs of the mobile phone market for greater storage capacity in the smallest possible physical form factor. The miniSD card was recently adopted by the SD Association as an ultra-small form factor extension to the SD card standard.

THOUGHT: Who is using MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service)?
Posted by PPCW.Net Editori - at 20:00 CET under 09 - Thoughts

When I was recently playing with the modified MMS composer of the xda II, I wondered: who is actually using MMS in Europe? The news says, operators report a rapid growth rate, but from which basis and with whom? I'm not using it, and even though most of my tech-savvy friends have a MMS capable phone, none of them is using it too. Some say they have played with it when they got their new phones, but could not find it appealing enough for ongoing use. I also asked teenagers what they think about MMS: too expensive was the common answer. Regardless who is now using MMS, after playing a bit with it, I found five reasons why people may not be too much interested in using MMS:

THOUGHT: W-LAN vs. GPRS - which one is my personal favorite while traveling?
Posted by PPCW.Net Editori - at 10:43 CET under 09 - Thoughts

My job requires lots of traveling, and with W-LAN being omnipresent in the news I also expected to find W-LAN hotspots reflecting the media presence: easily accessible and everywhere available at low cost. Equipped with notebook and W-LAN-PCMCIA card, and more recently with a Pocket PC (XDA II) with W-LAN-SD card, I was ambitious to find high-speed wireless Internet access wherever I went. I further was interested in the question if W-LAN is already becoming a serious threat to GPRS, the current prevailing wireless Internet access technology in Europe. However, after a couple of months, my readiness to use W-LAN while traveling significantly declined.

THOUGHT: Looking back - did the XDA change my daily life?
Posted by PPCW.Net Editori - at 11:12 CET under 09 - Thoughts

Contributed by Dr. Wolfgang Irber, PPCW.Net Reader and Business Professional

When I bought the XDA in June 2001, it was more out of curiosity than a real need. I always had eyed for a Pocket PC, and this new combination of PDA and phone with GPRS eventually got me, promising easy Internet access at reasonable speed wherever I go; a glimpse to the future?

Now looking back while on the brink to UMTS and significantly higher wireless data rates in Germany, the question arises, did the XDA change the way I communicate or access the Internet? Did it have any effect to my daily life?

THOUGHT: We need a new ActiveSync
Posted by Arne Hess - at 18:48 CET under 09 - Thoughts

Okay, this thought isn't new but with the introduction of Microsoft's Smartphone it's more urgent than before!
Why does I think we need a new one? Just because now more and more people will have two Microsoft Windows Mobile devices: a Pocket PC (phone Edition) and a Smartphone.
The problem of Active Sync is it's able to synchronize to one connected device only - the second device, which might be connected also - is ignored by Active Sync. So you as a user are forced to do the "DJ" aka Device Jockey. Plug it in, remove it, plug in the the other device, remove it again - just to get all your Outlook data synchronized. :-(
