THOUGHT: Is the public ready for data over 3G networks?

It's all about data. Right now you hear it from every operator that is going to launch 3G networks and Wi-Fi hot-spots these days. We are promised lots of bandwidth over wireless networks, wherever you go, wherever you are: easy and fast access to the Internet, to corporate networks, to stream movies, all made possible by the introduction of UMTS (W-CDMA). A whole new world is promised to us. But is the public ready for it?

If you listen to all the announcements you may get the impression that everybody is waiting to rush into the stores once the network has been opened to the public. But I guess most of us followed the news about what was and is happening, e.g., in Japan, the UK, and Italy, all countries where UMTS networks went commercial already some while ago. And as most of us will know, not much has happened in fact when it comes to data. But what went wrong?

Thought: 100 KB blocks for GPRS billing - that's not fair at all!

I'm starting to get very annoyed by this. At home, I'm getting a GPRS bill based on 10 KB blocks, but while traveling, many roaming operators write the bill based on 100 KB blocks. According to my experience, that's a very smart way to use GPRS as an efficient cash cow.

While on the go, I need to stay connected to my E-Mails, so using GPRS is simply a must for me. And GPRS is great; I love it. I'm so glad it is available since it made life so much easier for me. But when on GPRS roaming, I noticed that more and more operators are switching to 100 KB blocks for billing.

OFFLINE: Work, Pocket PCs and all. Getting back into the groove.
Posted by Carlo Guerrero - at 18:55 CET under 09 - Thoughts

If you haven't noticed, I haven't been visible in PPCW.Net as of late... Well, I had to take some time off to take care of important business.  There comes a time when so many things suddenly turn up at exactly the same time and that was just what happened.

Well, hopefully I've taken care of all that now and should be back in business with PPCW.Net.

THOUGHT: Back to the roots - Pocket PC (Phone Edition) plus 3G/UMTS mobile phone
Posted by Arne Hess - at 21:22 CET under 09 - Thoughts

Today, when I've tested some parts of my current 3G project, I thought about how convenient and handy it would be to use my PPCW.Net i-Mate Phone Edition with the speed of the current pre-launch 3G/UMTS networks and hey, why not back to the roots and using WAN via my mobile phone?
So I've installed Bluetooth Tools because it adds a Bluetooth modem port to the Phone Edition, bonded my i-Mate Phone Edition with my Nokia 7600 UMTS terminal and created a new dial-up connection:
