THOUGHT: When is the Pocket PC for a user crossing the boundary from toy to tool?
Posted by PPCW.Net Editori - at 11:18 CET under 09 - Thoughts

Contributed by Dr. Wolfgang Irber, PPCW.Net Reader and Business Professional

With more and more colleagues and friends using PDAs these days, it's interesting to observe the different "PDA habits". Besides the observation that Pocket PCs are becoming the clear winner with beginners, more interesting is the question how long does it take that somebody becomes used to switching from analogue to digital in information management, or in simple words: how long does it take to become familiar with these little devices? When is the time that the initial "toy" becomes a useful tool? Is there a difference when using the phone or the standard edition?

RANT: For what are pre-announcements and pre-orders worth?
Posted by Arne Hess - at 22:01 CET under 09 - Thoughts

Ouch, that hurts... :-( Right on the 8th June, when Apple announced the AirPort Express Wi-Fi base station and made it available for pre-orders, I've pre-ordered it from their online shop. While I've not expected a 48 hours shipping as told in the first confirmation mail, I've expected at least a shipping until mid July, as told in the second mail which announced a delay.
Today I got another mail from Apple's Online Shop which told me it's expected to be shipped end of July. Now I'm little irritated how many mails I will receive with new shipping dates before I really get it shipped.

THOUGHT: UK military denies ban on iPods but anyway...
Posted by Arne Hess - at 20:50 CET under 09 - Thoughts

BBC News Online recently reported about an iPod ban at the UK military which was already denied by a spokesman but the story and thoughts behind it is a good one and also Windows Mobile related:

The Ministry of Defence has denied reports that it has banned Apple's iPod due to fears it could be used to steal sensitive files. News reports said the music player and other portable storage devices had been banned from most sections of its headquarters in the UK and abroad.

The potential security risks posed by portable storage devices that plug into a PC's USB or FireWire ports has been highlighted recently in a couple of reports.
