SHOPPING: Draft ETAs for the new i-mate devices available
Posted by Arne Hess - at 20:11 CET under 01 - General News

During the past days and weeks I received a lot of questions from you about when I expect selling the new i-mate devices (namely i-mate Smartphone3 aka HTC Typhoon and i-mate PDA2K aka HTC Blue Angel) and as far as I can tell you today it will takes a little bit longer.
While the Smartphone3 is on sale in several Orange countries (but still not in all), the HTC Blue Angel (also known as Xda III or T-Mobile III) isn't on sale anywhere.
So the earliest release dates I got yet are end of September - not that bad at all.

VACATION END: Signing-in again
Posted by Arne Hess - at 10:37 CET under 09 - Thoughts

Friends, just a short information that I'm back from my summer-holidays where I was in France. I had a great time there - first in Brittany and later in Paris. If you never was in France, especially in Brittany - it's absolutely worth to visit!
As posted earlier in one of my comments, I've staid offline most of the time even if two local carriers have GPRS roaming agreements with my home carrier. No, I simply enjoyed the time with my girlfriend, the nature, the "vin rouge" and lots of "moules frites" :-) and downloaded my personal and public E-Mails once a day (mostly in the evening while I've watched the Olympic games) only.

VIRUS REMOVAL: Mobile phone virus removal becomes a business
Posted by Carlo Guerrero - at 13:39 CET under 09 - Thoughts

Over the last few months we've heard of viruses developed as Proof of Concept. Not really meant to do any harm nor intended to spread into the wild, these Proof of Concept viruses are supposed to be non-lethal. There were several that were developed, one for the Windows Mobile platform and one for the Series 60 Symbian platform. The one that is spreading right now is the one for the Series 60 Symbian platform called "Caribe."

Apparently, the "Caribe" virus has been released into the wild here in the Philippines. And while it really takes a careless person to really get this thing installed into a device, it seems that a lot are falling victim to it...

PREVIEW: HTC Blue Angel Wireless Features
Posted by Arne Hess - at 16:17 CET under 08 - Reviews

Since T-Mobile announced it's MDA III earlier this year, the interest for this new Pocket PC Phone Edition increases day by day. To be clear again - like the MDAs before, also this MDA is manufactured by HTC Taiwan but - and this is important to know - HTC developed two different versions: the GSM version called "Blue Angel" and the CDMA version called "Harrier".
While the Harrier supports CDMA as the only data option (according to the FCC information), the Blue Angel supports GSM/GPRS WAN, Wi-Fi b W-LAN and Bluetooth PAN data connections. I've recently received some exclusive screenshots of all the different access methods:

LINK: MoDaCo reviews the Orange SPV C500
Posted by Arne Hess - at 20:08 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

The Orange SPV C500, today's smallest and lightest Windows Mobile Smartphone, is the state of the art candy bar Smartphone and HTC's latest addition (introduced as HTC Typhoon). Finally it seems to become available from Orange (see link here) and my fellow MVP Paul over at MoDaCo gave it a complete review.

So if you live in an Orange country you definitely should give it a read (as you are the first to pick it up) and  if you don't live in an Orange country today you should even give it a read also because it seems to become available all over the world soon. ;-)

OFF TOPIC: Happy Lefthanders Day (-:
Posted by Arne Hess - at 17:41 CET under 01 - General News

Today is my/our day - the international day for lefthanders! (-: You think it's off-topic? No, it isn't because using a Pocket PC is harder for us lefties because the up/down scrollbar is on the right side of the screen and therefore it happens that you hide the rest of the screen with your beloved left hand (-; - if you scroll up and down, using the stylus.

But the GOOD news is Motorola had us lefthanders in mind when they developed the MPx Pocket PC Phone Edition. If you use it landscape, the navigation pad is on the right side which means you can simultaneous use the navigation pad (right hand) while holding and using the stylus (left hand). Right-handers can't use the navigation pad and the stylus simultaneous... :-p

RUMOR: Euro filing reveals Apple 'handheld computer'
Posted by Arne Hess - at 17:02 CET under 01 - General News

Through the years, we've seen and heard a lot of rumors about an Apple PDA and even smart phone but what the The Register is reporting today sounds far more than just a rumor:

Apple has filed for a European design trademark which may provide a tantalising glimpse of the company's long-awaited tablet computer.

The filing, made in May this year but only published this week, covers a "handheld computer" and contains sketches of what look like an iBook screen minus the body of the computer.

REVIEW: SanDisk 256 MB miniSD Card
Posted by Arne Hess - at 11:21 CET under 08 - Reviews

Yesterday I received a miniSD card, thanks to a friendly supporter of PPCW.Net. Right now, it's hard to get hands too these cards since they are still pretty new and not that common but this will change sooner we might expect. It's the same evolution we had with the CF card/SD card change before and since mobile devices like PDAs and now mobile phones also needs more and more storage space these type of cards becomes more interesting because they are smaller than CF cards while they are fully compatible too the SD standard.

The card I've received is the SanDisk 256 MB miniSD card and to be honest - reviewing a storage card isn't that easy.

PHOTOVIEW: The HTC Blue Angel (MDA III) vs. the Motorola MPx PPCPE
Posted by Arne Hess - at 11:17 CET under 09 - Thoughts

On Microsoft's Pocket PC Phone Edition sky, two new stars are going to appear (sooner or later): HTC's Blue Angel (better known as T-Mobile MDA III or Qtek 9090) and Motorola's MPx Pocket PC Phone Edition.
While the Blue Angel is following the slider concept we already know from mobile phones, I would call the MPx a kind of convertible (known from Windows XP Tablet PCs) which means it can be used as a kind of clam-shell mobile phone or stylus based Pocket PC but also as a kind of keyboard driven "micro-subnotebook".

TIP: Get Apple's AirPort Express working with WEP and DHCP
Posted by Arne Hess - at 13:06 CET under 09 - Thoughts

If you are using Apples AirPort Express access point (I've recently reviewed) and you want to get it working with WEP encryption you might face the one or the other problem.
Indeed there seems to be a serious problem in the combination WEP encryption and DHCP functionality. While DHCP works great without any encryption enabled (doesn't matter if you use 40 or 128 bit), DHCP isn't working anymore if you have enabled WEP encryption which means your connected Notebook or Pocket PC won't receive an IP address and therefore it can not access the LAN, WAN or Internet.

This happened for me on weekend when I've fine-tuned the different profiles you can create with the AirPort Express. While my general test profile is without encryption (just for the quick and dirty access/test) my regular profiles includes WEP for sure.

REVIEW: JAVOScreen, protecting your HTC Voyager screen from scratches

PREVIEW: The hidden Motorola MPx220 features
Posted by Arne Hess - at 16:39 CET under 08 - Reviews

We've already seen some previews of early Motorola MPx220 samples but so far non of them have mentioned the one or the other hidden feature of the Motorola MPx220 Smartphone and while I'm still working on my own complete review, I think it's time to talk about these features already.
Please note that these features might not be available in all the Beta ROM versions out there right now (for instance the Camera Self-Portrait feature disappeared in one ROM version I had) but it's pretty likely that it will appear in the final release.
