THOUGHT: How much do you miss a cradle?
Posted by Arne Hess - at 21:33 CET under 09 - Thoughts

Back in the early days of the Pocket PCs, it was good "tradition" to deliver the device with a cradle and also the first Smartphone like the HTC Canary, Tanager or Voyager included one. Now it seems to become more and more common to send the new devices without cradles - doesn't matter if Pocket PC or Smartphone. For instance neither the Motorola MPx220 nor the Orange SPV C500 or the HTC Magician (T-Mobile MDA compact) includes a cradle anymore but it's available as separate accessory only.

THOUGHT: How dumb can a brand-new anti virus software from Symantec be?
Posted by Arne Hess - at 00:11 CET under 09 - Thoughts

This bothers me for some time already, therefore I want to warn potential buyers. Some weeks ago, I thought it's a good idea to upgrade my previous anti-virus software from Norton InternetSecurity to Norton AntiVirus 2005 because I receive more and more virus-infected E-Mails (thanks to my public E-Mail address - also on PPCW.Net). When I bought AntiVirus 2005, I've decided to exclude the Firewall option because I'm behind a firewall enabled router and because I'm using Windows XP Service Pack 2 (yes, I still believe into the proper functionality of Microsoft products ;-)).

Some years ago, I've upgraded from McAfee to Norton because I had serious ActiveSync problem with McAfee, something I never had after with Norton.

THOUGHT: How copyright laws prevent me to get the full Digital Media experience
Posted by Arne Hess - at 21:37 CET under 09 - Thoughts

DRM and copyright laws are a pain, a real pain! No, not because it prevents users from illegally sharing ripped stuff through file sharing systems but because it prevents video DVD and music CD buyers from using the content how they want/planned to use it!

So the question is: does I bought the medium (in this case the physical DVD or CD-ROM) or the content? What happened (again) to make me posting this (again) on PPCW.Net?

THOUGHT: The XDA II and it's camera: more useful than I thought initially
Posted by Arne Hess - at 10:55 CET under 09 - Thoughts

When I first got the XDA II and used the built-in camera I honestly thought, "Uups, what kind of useless camera did they build into it!" I played a bit with the camera during the first weeks, but always was disappointed of the bad picture quality and eventually stopped using it... until recently.

THOUGHT: How to customize your hotel room as much as possible
Posted by Arne Hess - at 00:36 CET under 09 - Thoughts

Since yesterday evening, I'm back in Seattle for Microsoft's annual Möbius conference which brings a lot of mobility webmasters together and while I'm completely damaged after the flight and the 9 hours time difference, this morning I've realized what kind of "gadget hut" I made out of my hotel room here. :-)

While I have a pretty nice hotel room with a view over the Seattle harbor and thankfully the weather is better than forecasted, my room is more or less completely customized now.
