UTILITY: Socket WLAN Tools Mobile Edition v2 for Windows Mobile 2003
Posted by Arne Hess - at 16:21 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Socket recently released a new driver and utility for their W-LAN CF and SD cards which adds a couple of new handy features. While many/most Pocket PCs have W-LAN inbuilt today, a couple still exclude W-LAN - like the famous HTC Magician (aka i-mate JAM, O2 Xda II mini and T-Mobile compact).

The Socket WLAN Tools Mobile Edition v2 software utility for Windows Mobile 2003 (including Second Edition) allows you to view connection status, monitor available networks and troubleshoot connection issues - a US$ 25 software value that works exclusively with Socket CF and SDIO WLAN Cards (as well as with SanDisk cards, as I've tested it ;-)).

REVIEW: Piel Frama HTC Magician Leather Case
Posted by Arne Hess - at 12:13 CET under 08 - Reviews

Like most Pocket PCs and Smartphones, also the O2 Xda II mini, i-mate JAM, Qtek S100  and T-Mobile compact (all of these devices are the HTC Magician) includes a case. Nevertheless this cases is a pretty basic belt case, made of artificial leather and plastic and also the functions of the case is basic, for instance it doesn't holds SD cards.

Spanish leather manufacture Piel Frama recently released its long awaited genuine leather case for the HTC Magician and they were kind enough to send me a black cowskin leather case for a review. As said before, the HTC Magician is on sale as i-mate JAM, O2 Xda II mini and T-Mobile compact and therefore this leather case can be used with all of these devices.

EVENT: The Gunners in Munich or T-Mobile vs. O2
Posted by Arne Hess - at 20:36 CET under 09 - Thoughts

Today is Champions League day and Bayern München plays vs. Arsenal London in Munich. The fun-part - why this story is about wireless (and even about Windows Mobile) is the fact that Deutsche Telekom (aka T-Mobile) is sponsoring Bayern München, while British O2 UK is sponsoring the Gunners.
However, now it becomes even more funny: The Olympic stadium, where the match will happens tonight, is right beside the German O2 HQ and - I love this "guerilla marketing" - O2 (Germany or UK?) hired 15 floors of the "Uptown Tower" which is beside the O2 HQ and the Olympic stadium:

TIP: Charge the RoyalTek RTB-1000 GPS receiver with the Xda II charger

While mobility is a great thing, all our gadgets run with batteries and requires a recharge - sooner or later. However, sometimes one and one fits - in this case the RoyalTek RTB-1000 Bluetooth GPS receiver and the Xda II (aka HTC Himalaya) charger which works perfectly.

Most RTB 1000 sales packages exclude the AC adapter but includes the car charger only. :-(

THOUGHT: Is Spam the carriers "best friend"?
Posted by Arne Hess - at 14:57 CET under 09 - Thoughts

As always - if you connect your E-Mail server, doesn't matter if wired from your PC or wireless from your mobile device - you get tons of spam and same happened this year in Cannes for sure. However - as I've written many times before - it bothers me more if I download spam through a GPRS connection then downloading it through my DSL flat-fee (where it only bothers me in terms of time it takes to get it deleted) and it bothers me even more if I'm in International Roaming!

Nevertheless, this time in Cannes I got the thought that <sarcasm> spam might be carrier's best friend </sarcasm>?

VIEW: Caribe virus went wild in Cannes
Posted by Arne Hess - at 10:09 CET under 09 - Thoughts

Last week in Cannes, during the 3GSM World Congress, many devices were infected by the Caribe virus, as some online magazines confirmed too. The Caribe virus is a worm virus that infects mobiles running on the Symbian OS, including some manufactured by Nokia, Siemens and Sony Ericsson.

Once infected, it begins a continuous search for other Bluetooth devices to send itself to. As a result - if your device is infected - your battery life is significantly reduced, in some cases by up to 50%. The good news is, it's not sending any premium SMS in the background so you are not damaged in terms of financials but anyway - the Caribe is a kind of "proof of concept" for me which clearly shows viruses works on mobile devices and unlike PC viruses, the distribution mechanism is a different since it is using Bluetooth which most modern devices includes.

This little free utility fixes the problem since it adds an option into the File Explorer for MP3 file.

Posted by Arne Hess - at 13:41 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

It took a while and some of you even thought it's a ghost only but finally O2 UK, who released the Xda IIs (HTC Blue Angel) previously, released the Xda IIi (HTC Alpine). As reported before, the Xda IIi is the follower of the Xda II which means it comes along in the same form factor and housing but the the CPU was upgraded from a 400 MHz XScale to a 520 MHz Bulverde, the Xda IIi includes a Megapixel camera instead of a VGA only and also has built-in W-LAN!
