DONE: Finally I got my Windows Media Center 2005
Posted by Arne Hess - at 18:54 CET under 09 - Thoughts

Okay, okay - if you are a frequent reader of the::unwired you know that I've planned to buy a Windows Media Center Edition forever, even before MCE 2005 was released.
However, when it became clear that DVB-T is starting here in Munich (launch was 01. May) I decided to wait until it was launched to make sure I just start with a DVB-T card instead of an analogue TV-card.
Since neither HP nor Shuttle have released their Media Centers yet (the one I want) I decided to start with an interim Media Center for my living room since my self-made test-MCE (based on a standard PC) is way too loud for the living room so here we go with my latest gadget:

RETROSPECTION: The Sony Walkman WM-1 changed my way of mobility
Posted by Arne Hess - at 16:22 CET under 09 - Thoughts

For any reason I became a gadget geek and since I was a young teenager, I described my love to gadgets with "I enjoy to play with everything which has buttons and doesn't requires more than 12 volt power". When I was at my parents last weekend, I found my very first gadget which changed my view of mobility - my Sony Walkman WM-1 which was basically Sony's first commercial Walkman (therefore WM-1 I think).

THOUGHT: I'm fully digitized and locked out
Posted by Arne Hess - at 22:28 CET under 09 - Thoughts

Great, until tonight I was a big fan of DVB-T since it expanded my TV-experience I hadn't had in Munich before (for almost 7 years now).
However, right now we have a serious thunderstorm here in Munich with a lot of rain, similar to what I've experienced last time when I was in Asia, so I'm talking about heavy rain and digital TV, as good and convenient it is under perfect conditions, it stays digital aka black or white, 0 or 1, yes or no!

THOUGHT: Is there anything more annoying than Spam? Yes – paying for it!
Posted by Richard Sargeant - at 18:42 CET under 09 - Thoughts

When we read the brochures and reviews of the latest executive toys, we are frequently seduced by promises of total connectivity wherever we are. Once we've laid down our credit cards and opened the box, reality sets in. Apart from the sheer difficulty of configuring these things (which I'll return to some other time) no-one ever mentions the costs of that connectivity. And those costs are even harder to swallow, if you are forced to pay by the byte received, and much of those received bytes are unwanted Spam.

Recently I flicked through a copy of "PC Magazine" purchased somewhere on yet another flight to somewhere else some time ago. I really do lose track! The magazine had an article on Spam filters, and one service stood out as a winner. It was reasonably priced, totally effective with no false positives or missed Spam and needed no training. I decided to investigate.

THOUGHT: The unwired guy - not that unwired at all
Posted by Arne Hess - at 20:48 CET under 09 - Thoughts

Wow, since today my new DSL connection and yes - it rocks! :-)
I've upgraded my previous 1024/512 Kbps ADSL connection to a flex-ADSL connection.

What means flex-DSL? QSC's Q-DSL home Flexi-Flatrates gives you three DSL options you can change once per day:

THOUGHT: Why Sprite Backup is worthier than ActiveSync
Posted by Richard Sargeant - at 19:58 CET under 09 - Thoughts

It was Murphy's first law of mobile computing; the device will crash at the time that is least convenient. I'd grabbed my Qtek 9090 on the way to the airport for yet another business trip, seen the battery was a bit low and decided to swap it. To my dismay, for some strange reason, hardware reset. Oh no!

But I'd actually just spent money on the most boring type of software you can buy, and even more boring, I'd used it. That's backup software, using it is like going to the dentist, something you'll do next week. But this was much less painful!

THOUGHT: Is the HTC Wizard the follower of the HTC Magician?
Posted by Arne Hess - at 18:26 CET under 09 - Thoughts

Over the past weeks, we have learned and heard a lot about a new HTC Pocket PC Phone Edition called "HTC Wizard" and I had a deeper look into the leaked specifications as well as the leaked picture from PocketPC italia.com but honestly, I don't think we got the final information yet, neither in terms of the ID nor in terms of the specifications.
