RENAMED: HTC Universal - the T-Mobile UMTS Pocket PC formerly known as T-Mobile MDA IV
Posted by Arne Hess - at 17:35 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

When T-Mobile Germany announced the HTC Universal the first time, back in February, they've announced it as the "MDA IV" which makes sense, if you follow the naming scheme T-Mobile used so far (MDA, MDA II, MDA III) and which they have taken from O2 (who named its devices Xda, Xda II, Xda IIII and XDA IIi).

However, both - T-Mobile and O2 have added a name to the naming scheme with the HTC Magician introduction (MDA compact and Xda mini) and it seems T-Mobile is following this rule with the HTC Universal again which is called MDA Pro now:

DELAYED: HTC to ship the Universal Pocket PC Phone Edition late Q3
Posted by Arne Hess - at 13:14 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

HTC's eagerly anticipated Windows Mobile Pocket PC Phone Edition, code named "Universal", will go into volume production by the end of September, the HTC's CEO said yesterday.
That narrows the device's launch down somewhat from the "sometime in the second half of the year" timeframe HTC had previously given.

It also ties in with guidance given by T-Mobile, which announced in February it would offer Universal as the MDA IV. Then, the network said the device would ship in the summer while in March it had delayed the handset to the autumn.

RELEASED: Vodafone Germany is carrying the HTC Typhoon as VDA [UPDATE]
Posted by Arne Hess - at 20:05 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Following my previous posting from this year's CeBIT, Vodafone Germany finally released their first Windows Mobile Smartphone, the HTC Typhoon (which is running Windows Mobile 2003SE and also known as i-mate SP3i), under it's new name "Vodafone Digital Assistant" (which is leaned against Vodafone Pocket PC Phone Edition series called VPA = Vodafone Personal Assistant).

So from now, Vodafone (Germany only) is selling the HTC Typhoon as VDA "Music" for 49,90 Euro (with a Vodafone 100 plan) and the package also includes a 256 MB miniSD card (not a bad deal at all). Without a subscription, the VPA is selling for 369,90 Euro (hey, without a subscription you better buy from me ;-)).

If you have a Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0 flashed HTC Typhoon Smartphone and you want to use it as a USB-modem with your PC or Notebook you need a modem driver to get it recognized by Windows XP.
Since this isn't a officially supported Windows Mobile 5.0 device but just a developer (FUT = Friendly User Test) ROM, there wasn't such a driver available - so far.
Now, "nedge2k" from SPV-Developers tweaked the previous available Windows Mobile 2003 USB driver to make it working with Windows Mobile 5.0 as well:

UTILITY: Make your Pocket PC a USB Mass Storage device with Softick Card Export II
Posted by Arne Hess - at 20:39 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

What? Can a dream become true to use your Pocket PC as a USB mass storage device? Seems so, at least there is an interesting software floating around now which promisses exactly this: Softick Card Export II for Pocket PC and Windows Mobile.
So far, your PC had to have ActiveSync installed to get the Pocket PC recognized and to make it available in Windows' File Explorer which means you wasn't able to use your Pocket PC as a kind of USB memory stick (unlike Palm devices which do exactly that - being recognized as an external mass storage device).

O2 Germany's latest shop-flyer, which is valid from today until mid June revealed a big surprise: O2 will add the HTC Magician to their successful Xda-line and will carry it from mid June as "Xda mini". While we know the HTC Magician already from i-mate (as JAM), from T-Mobile (as MDA compact) and from Vodafone (as VPA compact), the German version will be different from the versions above (while it will use the (IMHO nicer) round JAM design, not the square-edged VPA compact design) as well as different from O2 Asia's Xda II mini version because O2 Germany is going to introduce the Xda mini in an exclusive anthracite:
