REPLACEMENT: T-Mobile prefers Opera Mobile for Smartphone over Internet Explorer Mobile
Posted by Arne Hess - at 20:07 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

As T-Mobile announced earlier this year, the carrier plans to equip the "web'n'walk" ready devices with special "optimized Internet browsers" and now it seems we know what T-Mobile means. It looks T-Mobile will use Opera Mobile - at least for the Windows Mobile Smartphones as we can read now on T-Mobile's updated SDA II specification page:

"Includes 64MB Mini-SD card with preinstalled Opera-Browser, SD card adapter to use the Mini-SD card with a card reader".

CONFORMITY: Samsung SGH-I300 received FCC approval
Posted by Arne Hess - at 13:35 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Following the news from last week, that O2 UK is expected to ship the Samsung SGH-I300 from October, phoneArena.com also found it at FCC now, where it got its type-approval last week.

On CeBIT, Samsung announced the the SGH-I300 availability for Europe during Q3 2005. However, so far it's not released here but since it got the FCC approval now, it could be also sold in the US, even if there are no information about a quad-band or US-based tri-ban version available.

LINK: Will the Samsung SGH-I300 become available from O2 UK in October?
Posted by Arne Hess - at 21:08 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

How British the Inquirer found out, O2 UK has the Samsung SGH-I300 on its "coming soon" page (together with the Motorola "Pebl" aka Motorola V6) to be available during October 05.
According to The Inquirer, the I300 should go on sale for around £ 79.99 which is something US$ 144.230 or 117.27 Euro with a O2 contract, not a bad price at all for a 3 GB HDD phone with (hopefully) Windows Mobile 5.0 (so far I've seen both, Windows Mobile 2003SE and 5.0 on a SGH-I300):

HOPE: Is the HTC Wizard Pocket PC Phone Edition on the way to T-Mobile US?
Posted by Arne Hess - at 20:35 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

So after the the HTC Tornado also the HTC Wizard is coming to the US and will go on sale from T-Mobile? According to Engadget, who got an anonymous hint it will happens anytime during October but most likely, this devices won't be an exclusive T-Mobile one but also available from Cingular.
Time will shows but unlike all T-Mobile MDAs and SDAs before, the HTC Wizard will be a quad-band device which makes more sense for T-Mobile to use in the US as well:

According to The Register who got exclusive information, Mitac is going to announce its first Windows Mobile Pocket PC Phone Edition device under the Mio-brand next week. But the A701 isn't a Pocket PC Phone Edition only but is expected to be GPS-enabled also which would make it the first Mio Phone Edition with GPS support and the second GSM/GPS device so far.

CONFORMITY: HTC Tornado made it to the FCC

The earlier announced HTC Tornado (announced as Qtek 8300) passed the FCC tests. The version that was tested by the FCC had the WiFi module includes which doesn't mean that carriers will release the Wi-Fi enabled version but HTC just want to make sure to have approved all options.
Another thing that Kris over at Smartphone Thoughts found out by reading through the documents is that this Smartphone will most likely be branded in the US as model "ST22A". It is not known who the vendor is but Kris guesses Audiovox.

NAMING: Benq to sell the P50 Pocket PC Phone Edition under the Siemens brand?
Posted by Arne Hess - at 15:48 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

According the the always well informed Chinese-language Commercial Times, BenQ is likely to sell its P50 Pocket PC Phone Edition under the Siemens brand, at least in Europe, instead of using the - still unknown - own Benq brand and the final launch is expected for late September/early October.
While I understand this move, it makes me a little bit wonder since Benq preqiously announced not to use the Siemens brand any longer (max. 1 year), after the acquisition is finalized.

As assumed in my Qtek 8300 posting earlier this week, T-Mobile prepares its SDA II launch. While T-Mobile Germany hasn't announced it yet (beside the earlier CeBIT announcement), the T-Mobile SDA II Smartphone appeared on the business customer page of T-Mobile Germany recently.
However, all the information T-Mobile provides there doesn't seems to be the final one, from the device photo to the specifications.
For instance T-Mobile isn't providing any information about the used operating system (and normally they do) or T-Mobile is describing the SDA II as a "black device" while the photo shows a silver one:

DISCONTINUED: Intel cans XScale line
Posted by Arne Hess - at 11:18 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

How The Register reported yesterday, Intel has formally announced the death of the PXA26x series of ARM-based XScale chips for PDAs, according to company documents seen by The Register.

PXA26x parts were the de facto standard for Pocket PC devices, for instance it was lately used with the HTC Blue Angel (Xda III/IIS) until the chip giant began shipping the more advanced PXA27x family, aka 'Bulverde' CPU (used with the HTC Magician aka i-mate JAM), just over a year ago. Since then, almost all of the new Intel-based PDAs and Pocket PC-phone combos have shipped with Bulverde processors (except the Blue Angel, a decision I never understood since the PXA26x was already used with the Xda II aka HTC Himalaya).

Now Socket Communication followed this trend and introduced the second W-LAN SD card which is way shorter than the original one:
