RUMOR: Has Palm more than one Windows Mobile powered device in the pipeline already?
Posted by Arne Hess - at 14:04 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

At least you could read the press release of Picsel that way because both - Picsel and Palm are talking about the "upcoming line of Windows Mobile-based Treo smartphones".

However, at least we know now, that you will be able to read PDF files on the Treo 700w as well as on the following Windows Mobile devices because Picsel Technologies has just announced its Picsel PDF Viewer will be optimized for "Palm, Inc.'s future line of Microsoft Windows Mobile-based Palm Treo smartphones, the first of which is expected to be available to Verizon Wireless customers in early 2006."

Picsel PDF Viewer will allow Treo smartphone users to access full, native PDF documents directly from their handsets, without having to convert or reformat content.

Okay, Apple and Microsoft is like Nitro and Glycerin but hey, since Microsoft and Palm announced their cooperation for a Windows Mobile powered Treo this week too, why not.
Today, a couple screenshots appeared on a site which shows a fully working iTunes client, running on a HTC Himalaya (which was reflashed to Windows Mobile 5.0) Windows Mobile Pocket PC and the shots looks promising enough.
No doubt, it's not that hard to fake screenshots but that many?

ADVANCED: Motorola's "Pretty in Pink" Razr and Moto Q Smartphone to hit stores in December?
Posted by Arne Hess - at 17:24 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Motorola's latest Windows Mobile Smartphone, the Moto Q (which was unveiled in July) can be expected to hit the market late this year in December (which is - IMHO - too late and optimistic anyway because in December the carriers have their Christmas campaigns in place and up and running already and therefore I don't expect any special launches anyway).

However, Motorola CEO Ed Zander confirmed that the Motorola Q, a Razr-kind QWERTY phone, based on Microsoft's Windows Mobile 5.0 Smartphone OS, should be released earlier then previously announced. In the initial announcement, Motorola was talking about a planned availability during first quarter 2005.

UTILITY: Spb Software House released Spb Full Screen Keyboard 3.0 for Pocket PC
Posted by Arne Hess - at 10:05 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Spb Software House recently released its Full Screen Keyboard in version 3.0. SPB Full Screen Keyboard is a powerful way to enter text quickly and easily on your Pocket PC.

Spb has done extensive usability testing to understand what should be improved to make entering text even simpler. It turned out that the leading causes of misprints, when typing with thumbs, were users' individual typing manner and device-specific screen press handling. These problems were overcome by some innovations. With the growing amount of entered texts the program gets used to user's typing manner, gathers statistics, and compensates accordingly.

T-Mobile Austria is commencing a data offensive in the fall and is expanding its product and tariff portfolio: with the MDA Pro, the world’s first UMTS-capable mini laptop, T-Mobile is setting the pace in Austria.
Parallel to this Mobile Internet, which provides T-Mobile customers stationary and mobile high-speed access to the Internet, has now expanded its portfolio to offer a sensationally favorable variant for limited use: Mobile Internet Small. This means that T-Mobile customers can now surf the Internet for as little as EUR 21 per month - 250 MB is already included in the package price.

Due to all the T-Mobile and O2 announcements, I completely missed to write about i-mate here who's also (as a matter of fact, again it was expansys) to launch the HTC Typhoon as i-mate SP5 and SP5m (sounds like the "SP4" was canceled which could be the HTC Hurricane).
The SP5 and SP5m only differentiate in the ID but both devices will run on Windows Mobile 5.0, will have a QVGA screen, are quad-band and includes W-LAN (WiFi b), Bluetooth and IrDA and for they will also feature a 1.3 megapixel camera.

Design-wise, the SP5 looks like the Qtek 8310 while the SP5m looks like the Qtek 8300:

LOCKOUT: T-Mobile's MDA Pro available with SIM-Lock only?
Posted by Arne Hess - at 14:41 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Something weird happens with T-Mobile Germany's MDA Pro (HTC universal) which is on sale since last week: As a matter of fact, it's available with SIM-Lock only, even if you pay the full price! While it is typical in Germany that prepaid/PAYG devices are sold with SIM-Lock, it's unusual that these kind of expensive devices (you can either buy subsidized with a contract of without a contract for the regular price) are on sale with a SIM-Lock and even if so, normally you either get the SIM-Unlock code if you buy it without a contract but full price (which is 749,94 Euro for the MDA Pro) or the shop will unlock if for you before it is given.

The guys over at Smartphone France got a rendering (or photo) of the rumored Orange SPV C600 which seems to become what the C550 was already expected: a Windows Mobile 5.0 device.

According to Smartphone France the C600 (HTC code named Tornado) is a Windows Mobile 5.0 device with built-in 1.3 megapixel camera and will support GSM, GPRS and EDGE on a quad-band base (which makes it perfect for North America also). It also has a QVGA screen, weights 105 g and should work up to 7 days in stand-by or 4 hours talk time:

REGRESS: T-Mobile's SDA II is Windows Mobile 2003 only
Posted by Arne Hess - at 19:00 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Oh, that's real bad news! Instead of moving forward, T-Mobile Germany is regressing with its lately announced SDA II Windows Mobile Smartphone because it is based on Windows Mobile 2003 not as expected (by me) on Windows Mobile 5.0 aka Magneto.
This means, it's basically the same device as the Orange C550 (HTC Hurricane) instead of using the newer HTC Tornado platform which is a Windows Mobile 5.0 device.
So no, the SDA II isn't the T-Mobile version of the recently announced Qtek 8310 series but only the Orange C550 in a different ID:
