CONFUSION: Is the Samsung SGH-i300 released with Windows Mobile 2003 SE and 5.0? [UPDATE]
Posted by Arne Hess - at 16:28 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Interesting. While I wrote in my Samsung SGH-i300 review from Saturday, that the device will be launched with Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition, instead of the expected Windows Mobile 5.0, "Gears" from CoolSmartPhone.com claims that O2 UK has confirmed that it will be launched (in the UK) with Windows Mobile 5.0 (instead of 2003 Second Edition):

REVEALED: Cingular to carry the HTC Tornado as HTC 2100/2125
Posted by Arne Hess - at 18:47 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

As Cingular leaked themselves on their website, the U.S. carrier plans to introduce the HTC Tornado Smartphone (also known as O2 Xda phone/i-mate SP5) as HTC 2100/2125.

However, unlike i-mate and O2, Cingular will use a different ID (as it looks on the screenshot) which is so far introduced/announced by Orange only and Orange will sell it as SPV C600:

REVEALED: Cingular to carry the HTC Wizard as HTC 8100/8125
Posted by Arne Hess - at 18:38 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

As Cingular leaked themselves on their website, the U.S. carrier plans to introduce the HTC Wizard Pocket PC Phone Edition (also known as O2 Xda mini S/i-mate K-Jam) as HTC 8100/8125.

However, unlike i-mate and O2, Cingular will not use the "Prodigy" ID of the Wizard but the (original) more brick-looking Wizard ID (which has a nicer keyboard anyway):

UNVEILED: Japan gets its first Windows Mobile Phone Edition from Sharp
Posted by Arne Hess - at 21:37 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Finally, also Japan - otherwise home of the gadgets - get its first Windows Mobile Pocket PC Phone Edition. The Sharp W-ZERO3 or WS0003SH will even run Windows Mobile 5.0! Sharp is well known for their previous PDA devices called Zaurus SL-C and in the past Casio was the only Japanese Windows Mobile device maker but retired from the consumer market some years ago.
Now comes Sharp and their Windows Mobile 5.0 device includes a 3.7" screen, Wireless LAN, features an Intel PXA270 CPU with 416MHz, includes 128MB Flash memory, 64MB SDRAM a 1.3 megapixel camera and also has telephony functions (otherwise it would be a plain Pocket PC, not a Phone Edition).

ANNOUNCED: Samsung officially introduces the SGH-i300 Windows Mobile Smartphone
Posted by Arne Hess - at 18:04 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Today, Samsung Korea announced the official release of its latest Windows Mobile Smartphone - the SGH-i300 which was unveiled last CeBIT already.
Unlike previous announcements, the release version will comes with Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition for Smartphone instead of Microsoft's latest version - Windows Mobile 5.0 (even if the Samsung was showcased at Microsoft's WM5.0 launch event).
Nevertheless, the other features are pretty state of the art or even better since it will features a QVGA screen, tri-band GSM/GPRS (GSM 900, 1800 and 1900) as well as Bluetooth (but not W-LAN).
The absolute highlight for sure is the 3GB hard disk and in addition it supports microSD memory cards (unfortunately not SD or miniSD). For navigation, you can either use the d-pad the standard left/right/up/down way or you can scroll the (mechanical) wheel (like with the 1st generation iPod).

PROOF: Is this the T-Mobile MDA compact II?
Posted by Arne Hess - at 21:25 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

We have heard some rumors about the new T-Mobile MDA compact II (you remember, the follower of the T-Mobile MDA compact) which is expected to be the HTC Charmer but we haven't seen any photos or drawings so far.
What we know from previous information, the MDA compact II is expected to includes W-LAN as well as 128 MB ROM and should work with Windows Mobile 5.0.
While I was away over the weekend, I got the following scans of a device which looks like a T-Mobile MDA compact (aka HTC Magician) but two buttons has changed. The previous Calendar and Contacts buttons are Start and ok now (see red circles below):

SMARTPHONE: O2 Asia to release the HTC Tornado as O2 Orion
Posted by Arne Hess - at 19:35 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

O2 makes it hard to follow them! While they will release the HTC Wizard in Asia as Xda Mini Pro, they will release the same device in Germany as Xda mini S. While they have released the Xda Exec in UK, they will not release it in Germany (and I haven't heard anything about Asia so far). On the other hand, O2 Asia will release the Xda Atom soon, which we haven't received any information yet about a possible launch in Europe.
Last but not least, O2 Germany will release the HTC Tornado as Xda phone in Germany soon, while CNet Asia revealed today that O2 Asia will release the HTC Tornado in Asia as O2 Orion but wait, not with a different name only but with a different ID also!
While O2 Germany will use the ID for their Tornado, Orange already introduced with the Orange SPV C550 (you remember, the one with the music keys), O2 Asia will use the ID also used by i-mate for the SP5 (you remember, more the classical ID).

CLARIFICATION: The Xda Atom isn't from HTC but from Quanta and more MDA compact II information
Posted by Arne Hess - at 19:01 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Ok, most sites haven't believed the::unwired's information, that the soon to be released O2 Xda Atom isn't from HTC but from Quanta, as we always said, so I want to make sure again: O2's Xda Atom is neither based nor manufactured by HTC but by Quanta (worlds largest ODM for Laptops). The rants you've might have heard about an HTC device called "Athena" being the O2 Xda Atom is simply wrong. Yes, there is an option to see an HTC Athena but this will be - if ever released - a completely different device as I've got it confirmed today.
For sure, HTC is planning on the next version of devices and "Athena" could be one option to be released (as all ODMs have many devices in development while not all will be released) but the Xda Atom "Athena" is from Quanta!

UPDATE: i-mate released another ROM update for SP3i including Windows Media 10
Posted by Arne Hess - at 19:55 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Finally! I knew it a little bit longer but it took even longer for i-mate to make it available. Anyway, finally it's here - the latest SP3i ROM update for i-mate's HTC Feeler version and this ROM update comes with many improvements, most of us have waited for.
No, it doesn't contains a Windows Mobile 5.0 upgrade (otherwise it would be and upgrade, not an update) but some other important upgrades and fixes:

CLONE: The iPod clone which is a Pocket PC - Pidion BM-200
Posted by Arne Hess - at 16:31 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

If Apple would ever decide to build a new Apple Newton, it could looks like this new Pocket PC from Korean ODM Pidion. The BM-200 called Pocket PC Phone Edition seriously reminds me on an iPod.
Beside of being a design beauty (at least on the front; on the side and back the designers seems to lost the interest to make it a design-flagship), also the features are quite impressive and mostly state of the art since it includes: Windows Mobile CE 5.0, CDMA radio (which means we will not see it outside Korea anyway), WiFi, Bluetooth, a 520 MHz Intel PXA270 CPU, 64 MB RAM, 128 MB ROM, miniSD 2 megapixel camera with photo-light and a 2.8" touch screen which supports QVGA with up to 260.000 colors. All this, packed into 61 x 119 x 19 mm only which is slightly larger then a 60 GB-iPod!

REFRESH: T-Mobile to refresh its MDA compact as MDA compact II
Posted by Arne Hess - at 15:59 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Over at "Total Mobile" you can read, that T-Mobile (UK) will release two new Windows Mobile devices by Christmas this year: the MDA Vario (which is the HTC Wizard) and a new - so far unknown Windows Mobile device - to be called " MDA compact II".
According to own inquiries, the MDA compact II will will has the same size as today's T-Mobile MDA compact has but - and this is the most important part - the new MDA compact II will use Windows Mobile 5.0 instead of Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition and will includes W-LAN! Therefore it cannot be the Magician at all (since the Magician hasn't has sufficient memory to run Windows Mobile 5.0 nor it has W-LAN capabilities) but must be a new, unknown device. Either from HTC or it might be the same device from Quanta, which O2 is going to introduce as O2 Xda Atom soon.

No word yet, if this device will make it to the market or not and if so, to which Vodafone markets but "flywhc" got this Smartphone as a "test device" (for what ever).
