On last week's ComBCon exhibition in Seoul, Samsung previewed their upcoming SPH-M8000 WiBro-enabled Pocket PC the first time.
The SPH-M8000 is based on the same slider-design as Samsung's SCH-i830 and SCH-i730 Pocket PC Phone Editions and features the slide-out QWERTY keyboard a 65k color QVGA 2.8" TFT LCD screen, dual 1.3MP and 3MP cameras for video conferencing, S-DMB satellite TV reception, TV-output and Korean's WiBro data-standard. CONFIRMED: Grundig GR980 aka HTC Universal comes to Telefonica Moviles
Posted by Arne Hess - at 13:20 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Two days ago, I've speculated if Spanish Telefonica Moviles might pick-up the Grundig GR980 (aka HTC Universal), the first and only UMTS-enabled Windows Mobile Pocket PC and thanks to "MadBer" we got the confirmation now.
He sent over a scan from the latest Spanish Telefonica catalogue he received over a month ago already (okay, so it wasn't that new at all ;-)) and there the GR980 appeared as "Disponible Próximamente" which means "Coming Soon":

FOLLOWER: Grundig mobile to release the HTC Universal in Europe as GR980
Posted by Arne Hess - at 17:10 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Grundig mobile (the brand name of Grupo Vitelcom, a Spanish ODM) has revealed that, it will release the well known HTC Universal (better known as i-mate JasJar, T-Mobile MDA Pro or O2 Xda Exec) during Q1 next year.
Nothing else except the specifications are known today (neither the price nor the countries where the GR980 can be expected) but Vitelcom has a strong and old partnership with Spanish Telefonica Moviles and therefore there are some fair chances to see it released in Spain also.

Which makes me certain about such a launch as well, is the branding on one of the web photos. While the (left) animated image just shows the device, the right image clearly shows the Moviles logo left from the screen as well as the Today skin indicates the Moviles "M":

Posted by Arne Hess - at 14:09 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Sprite Software, well known for it's Pocket PC Backup software yesterday announced a first public Beta release of Sprite Backup V5.0.0 for Windows Mobile 5.0. This Beta release, even far away from the final version, is an important step in preparing for the full commercial release of Sprite Backup and Sprite is very keen to hear your feedback to improve the backup experience if possible.

A working backup solution for Windows Mobile 5.0 is appreciated after Microsoft also removed the backup options from ActiveSync 4.x and due to the changed core system of Windows Mobile 5.0, most of the previous backup solutions doesn't works with Windows Mobile 5.0 anymore.

UPDATE: Skype released new Beta with WM 5.0 and better low power CPU support [UPDATE]
Posted by Arne Hess - at 17:36 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Skype recently released two new Skype clients for the Pocket PC: Skype for Pocket PC Beta version and Skype for Pocket PC low CPU Beta version
As you can see, v1.2.0.91 is especially designed for Pocket PCs with less then 400 MHz but Skype still recommends the use of an external W-LAN card if used with Pocket PCs with 300 MHz CPUs. However, I wonder what happens if the new version is used with TI OMAP 850 powered Pocket PCs which have 200 MHz only (like the HTC Wizard, Charmer and Prophet). Have to test it over the weekend.

AVAILABLE: Cingular launched the Cingular 2125 Windows Mobile 5.0 Smartphone
Posted by Arne Hess - at 16:37 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

I've written about the Cingular 2125 (aka the US version of the HTC Tornado) earlier and today is the day where it went on sale at Cingular.
The Cingular 2125 is running Windows Mobile 5.0 and manufactured by HTC. Unlike the original HTC Tornado reference design, Cingular removed (like most other carriers too) the W-LAN feature. For better reception, a hump was added on top of the devices which makes it looking a little bit - well, let's say - weird and destroys a little bit the nice look and feel it original had as Orange C600.

Also I can confirm (with the screenshots), that the Prophet is indeed sporting W-LAN (as announced but never trust the marketing materials ;-))
