UPDATE: E-Ten releases ROM update for the E-Ten M600 with Bluetooth Stereo Headset support
Posted by Arne Hess - at 15:52 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Last night I got an E-Mail from E-Ten regarding a "new" ROM (version 0171) for the E-Ten M600 Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC Phone Edition, E-Ten is providing to the media but the ROM isn't anything secret at all, it's even not that new (but from 26th December last year). Therefore it's already available from several E-TEN distributors.

ROM version 0171 contains some major radio improvements and fixes but is still based on Windows Mobile 5.0 AKU 1.1 which - as we know - supports Bluetooth contact synchronization with car kits (see my previous review here) but not Bluetooth stereo through the A2DP profile.

UPDATE: Skype updates Skype for Pocket PC to v2 without adding v2 features
Posted by Arne Hess - at 13:35 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Yesterday, Skype released a new Skype version for Windows Mobile Pocket PCs and updated from "Pocket PC 1.2 beta" to "Pocket PC 2.0 beta".
However, if you expect the PC v2 video calling functionality for Pocket PCs now, you will be disappointed because v2 only adds a graphics update (2.0 style) as well as an improved contact list sorting. That's the only changes. All the rest are buxfixes (some of them important, others aren't).

UTILITY: Vito Technology released Vito TaskSwitcher for Windows Mobile Smartphones
Posted by Arne Hess - at 17:08 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

One of the real benefits of the Windows Mobile Smartphone platform is its multi-tasking capability we all know from our PCs. Therefore it makes sense to have an easy to use task-switcher on the device (like Alt-Tab on the PC) which - unfortunately - Microsoft neither provides for Pocket PCs nor for Smartphones. Therefore VITO Technology released TaskSwitcher for Windows Mobile Smartphones. It's an already well-known and highly popular utility for Pocket PC users and now it is ready to conquer the new platform.

ANNOUNCED: E-Ten introduced the E-Ten G500 Pocket PC Phone Edition with inbuilt GPS
Posted by Arne Hess - at 16:35 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

The G500 was floating through the Internet for quite a while and now it was officially announced by E-Ten Corporation, a Taiwan-based ODM.
The G500 is the first Pocket PC Phone from E-Ten to have fully integrated GPS capabilities. The G500's embedded RoyalTek GPS module, featuring the SiRF Star III high sensitivity chipset and an innovative internal antenna design, means that PDA or phone owners who also regularly need to access GPS services, no longer have to carry additional accessories or even a separate GPS device when they travel. No other product makes it as easy or as convenient as the G500 to have the latest satellite navigation technology always on hand.

ANNOUNCED: O2 Germany to release the HTC Prophet as O2 Xda neo [UPDATE]
Posted by Arne Hess - at 10:56 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Today, O2 Germany announced the launch of its latest Windows Mobile Pocket PC, the O2 Xda neo. Since the Xda neo is based on the HTC Prophet (see my preview here) we already know mostly everything but O2 Germany confirmed that the neo will includes W-LAN (unlike the Xda phone which excludes W-LAN) as well as the 2 megapixel camera and is running Windows Mobile 5.0.

A price wasn't given today and as release date, the carrier just said "spring". However, I got the word from O2 Germany, that the Xda neo will be released with the AKU 2.0 which will support - as highlights - Bluetooth stereo streaming (via A2DP) and Microsoft's own push E-Mail solution (based on Exchange 2003).

STREAMING: MyTinyTV - place shift TV for Windows Mobile Pocket PCs
Posted by Arne Hess - at 18:00 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Today we have two great "place shift" TV solutions in the market already - Orb from Orb Networks and Sling Media's Slingbox. However, now comes another solution, developed for Pocket PCs and called MyTinyTV.

You can use MyTinyTV either at home within your own LAN or you can take it with you because it also works across the Internet when you are away from home. Go to your favorite wireless hotspot, like Starbucks, at airports, at hotels and watch TV or take your WAN broadband connection (MyTinyTV recommends a Pocket PC download speed of at least 250 Kbps, so EV-DO as well as UMTS are sufficient).
For remote access you will need a wireless Internet account and a decent broadband connection at your house (at least 250Kbps), where the desktop computer with the TV tuner is located.

RELEASE: Vodafone Germany launched the VDA II aka HTC Hertz
Posted by Arne Hess - at 13:25 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Silently, Vodafone Germany has launched a new Windows Mobile Smartphone called VDA II. The VDA II is based on HTC's Tornado reference design but uses the "Hertz" ID (which is the same as used by i-mate for the SP5).
Therefore the device isn't anything new, except the fact that it seems that Vodafone is the first carrier which uses the W-LAN feature of the Tornado-series (remember - Orange has disabled it in the C600, O2 Germany has disabled it in the Xda phone and also Cingular isn't using it for the Cingular 2125).

UTILITY: Automatic Keylock for Windows Mobile Smartphones
Posted by Arne Hess - at 20:17 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Not sure how old this thing is (anyone knows? At least I haven't heard about it before) but since it is also available for Windows Mobile 5.0 Smartphones now, at least this version can't be too old. ;-)
One thing which really annoys me with the Windows Mobile Smartphones is the missing auto-key lock, mostly every bred and butter mobile phones has. Sure you can go the workaround through the device lock but this is a workaround, even not a good one.
Anyway, with maniac's Automatic key lock (which was updated yesterday) you get a pretty convenient tool which does pretty much all you need and even more:

REFRESH: Samsung to re-release the Samsung SGH-i300 as I300X with 4 GB hard disk
Posted by Arne Hess - at 12:29 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

If you follow the Smartphone developments, you know for sure the Samsung SGH-i300 Windows Mobile Smartphone which was released late last year, first time show-cased at last year's CeBIT and which was one of the launch (event only) devices of the Windows Mobile 5.0 launch.
Nevertheless, it came with a - today - fairly small hard disk and Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition. Still, the i300 is a superior phone (which I had to return, unfortunately, I'm really missing it) but for sure, in this setup it can not compete with more state of the art Smartphones, like the latest HTC devices which even supports W-LAN, anymore.

SKINNING: Zphone's free Skin Pack for WM5 QVGA Pocket PC Phone Edition
Posted by Arne Hess - at 13:45 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

With the introduction of Windows Mobile 5.0, Microsoft added more flexibility for carriers to customize the Phone Edition dial-pad which isn't - unfortunately - used so far by most ODMs or carriers.
Therefore, most dial-pads either looks like the original Microsoft dial-pad or are tweaked minimalist only (like a changed background skin).
However, if you want to give your Pocket PC Phone Edition a more individual look and feel and you are looking for something which fits to your Today screen better, you should check out this free collection of dial-pad skins for (QVGA) Windows Mobile 5 (only) Pocket PC Phone Editions:
