CURIOSITY: Microsoft Passport doesn't likes Windows Mobile Pocket PCs but Smartphones only
Posted by Arne Hess - at 19:33 CET under 09 - Thoughts

Normally, you should think, that a company like Microsoft is offering highly integrated services and normally they do if you take the integration of Windows Mobile into the PC and server environment with all the sync functionalities, etc but now imagine you bought a new Windows Mobile Pocket PC, you would like to start using MSN Messenger the first time and a friend tells you, that you need a Microsoft Passport account. Not a big deal at all, since you have the Internet in your pocket and you should be able to easily create such an account right from your Pocket PC. Ok, so far the theory.

SUMMARY: The 2006 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona
Posted by Arne Hess - at 17:09 CET under 09 - Thoughts

So the '06 3GSM Congress is already history but I don't want to leave it without having a short summary of what I've seen in Barcelona. First of all, Barcelona was a great host and the change from Cannes to Barcelona was worth. During the past 10+ years, Cannes was the right place for the 3GSM Congress but over the time, the focus changed from a pure congress to an exhibition and while - in the past - I've joined several congress sessions, this year I haven't joined a single session at all but was running around through the exhibition all the time. Also, this year's 3GSM had as much participants as never before in terms of exhibitors, visitors and press members and it seriously established itself as the most important wireless exhibition in the world; even if it got too much show (sometimes it felt too much like CES or CeBIT with all the attractions) around the stands. I still prefer the more silent but focused way, as it was before in Cannes but well - time is changing and therefore such a focus. However, since the 3GSM isn't a public exhibition at all, neither for consumers, nor for retailers but a pure B2B, it's not necessary at all to attract visitors with such shows. But ok, that's my very own humble opinion here.

THOUGHT: On the 3GSM Congress but disconnected?
Posted by Arne Hess - at 14:36 CET under 09 - Thoughts

Wow, what an amazing organization here. Don't want to blame anyone but hey, since this morning both, the Internet connection as well as the power connection are down at the press center or what meant to be the press center. Right now, there are around 100 journalists around me, everybody is trying to charge the Notebook, to get an Internet connection through LAN or Wi-Fi and even my UMTS connection isn't working at all which doesn't makes me wonder, looks like everybody is using UMTS as the fallback (the journalists) or to show services (the exhibitors). So if you see this posting, I've managed - somehow - to get a connection to upload it. Otherwise it will stay on my PC until tonight, if I'm back in the hotel.

3GSM LIVE: Packing my bags for 3GSM Congress in Barcelona
Posted by Arne Hess - at 21:32 CET under 09 - Thoughts

Barcelona is the keyword, I always want to say Cannes and interesting enough I'm not the only one. :-) Most of the GSM insiders are still talking about Cannes like "see you in Cannes!" or "will you be in Cannes too?".
The reason for this is simple: for more than 15 years or so, the 3GSM Congress (in the early day it just was the GSM Congress) was in Cannes until it became too busy and expensive there. Therefore the GSMA moved it to Barcelona.
