CONFORMITY: Tatung M1 Windows Mobile Smartphone received FCC approval
Posted by Arne Hess - at 20:45 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Do you remember my Tatung M1 coverage from last week? Now it looks like Tatung made some serious progress in getting their M1 Windows Mobile Smartphone approved by the FCC.
As reported this week, it received the required FCC approval and now it is speculated if the M1 might be launched by Cingular.
Since the Tatung M1 is a quad-band GSM phone with GPRS and Bluetooth support, it can be easily launched in the US and according to the screenshots in the manual of the device show the Cingular name as a network operator (which is unusual since normally for these kind of screenshots a dummy network name is used but not an existing network name). Therefore is guessing that the biggest US carrier will offer the M1, taking the Windows Mobile to the masses.

3GSM LIVE: HTC Hermes UMTS Pocket PC Phone Edition surfaced
Posted by Arne Hess - at 10:41 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

No, the HTC Hermes was neither announced during the 3GSM Congress nor it was shown publicly anywhere here but it surfaced anyway. The folks over at got their hands on a working prototype of the next generation, small form factor, UMTS-enabled Pocket PC Phone Edition from HTC code named Hermes.
What to say about the Hermes? It's small, way smaller than the Universal, it's a mix between the HTC Magician and Wizard, since it has the Magician ID and the Wizard slide-out keyboard.
In addition to GSM/GPRS and UMTS it's expected to support HSDPA as well, unlike the current HTC Pocket PCs it's sporting a 300 MHz Samsung processor, has 128 MB flash and 64 MB memory, has the typical small 2.8" touchscreen, supports 802.11b/g and  Bluetooth 2.0, memory is extendable though microSD, has a 2.1 megapixel camera with photo light and a secondary VGA cam on the front for UMTS video telephony and has - interesting enough - a scroll wheel!

3GSM LIVE: Photos of the i-mate Smartflip aka HTC Star Trek
Posted by Arne Hess - at 09:34 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Maybe one of the Windows Mobile highlights here at 3GSM Congress was the official announcement of the i-mate Smartflip (also known under it's HTC code name Star Trek), which revealed last week already and was even not shown in the i-mate booth. However, Steve Ballmer presented it during his keynote as well as the guys in the i-mate marquee have a couple of prototypes.
Since it is available as a prototype only, you can see that we are still far away from the launch, maybe months but the design is already finalized and if you are a fan of Motorola's RAZR V3, you will definitely enjoy the Smartflip as well. It's a Windows Mobile 5.0 device, powered by an OMAP CPU and supports GSM, GPRS, EDGE quad-band. It has Bluetooth (but no Wi-Fi) and includes a 1.3 megapixel camera.

3GSM LIVE: Photos of the HTC Trilogy aka the first Windows Mobile TV-enabled Smartphone
Posted by Arne Hess - at 13:56 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

So we have learned yesterday, that Virgin Mobile will launch its mobile TV service later this summer and as BT (one of the partners) confirmed today, it's not a trial but should be seriously seen as a commercial launch! Also BT confirmed, that the HTC Trilogy, which was presented yesterday, will be indeed the commercial hardware for this service launch. I will leave the review to someone else from UK, where the service will be launched but anyway, here we go with some live photos of the device, some already called a "ruggedized Smartphone". Interesting enough, on yesterday's press photos, it looks way huger than it is in reality, which doesn't mean that it is nice anyway:

3GSM LIVE: Another Gigybyte Pocket PC Phone Edition surfaced
Posted by Arne Hess - at 12:15 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

From Gigabyte, you remember the Taiwanese handset maker which was the first company which sold an AKU 2.0 equipped Pocket PC Phone Edition last year, another Pocket PC Phone Edition surfaced here in Cannes and unlike Gigabyte's first device, the g-Smart, this device comes in a more traditional Pocket PC look and feel and reminds pretty much on the HTC Muse. However, unlike the Muse, this device will not run on UMTS but 2.5g GSM/GPRS only but hit has a regular QVGA screen.
Also it reminds me pretty much on the new Portable Media Centers and this is happens for a good reason: the new Gigabyte Pocket PC Phone Edition concentrates way more on multimedia than the g-Smart did, especially because it includes a 2.1 megapixel camera:

Barcelona, Spain, February 13, 2006 - Samsung Electronics, Co., Ltd., (Samsung) today unveiled an extraordinary product portfolio for 2006, led by the most diverse and advanced slim phones in Europe.
Samsung is renowned for mobile phone design and has introduced a number of handsets that have broken the traditional design. The introduction of this new slim range addresses the consumers' desire for thinner handsets. Samsung was mindful to develop slim handsets that remained as highly reliable devices with feature-rich technology.

Samsung's commitment to quality inevitably means that it is not always the first to market with new designs – the emphasis is more on getting things right. However, when consumers choose a Samsung mobile phone, they are not only getting a carefully designed handset, they are also getting the best in functions and features. The new portfolio of slim handsets will be introduced by Samsung around the world throughout 2006. UPGRADE: Destinator released Windows Mobile 5.0 upgrade for Destinator PN for Pocket PC
Posted by Arne Hess - at 15:27 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Finally you can also use your Destinator PN with your latest Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC (Phone Phone Edition) because Destinator has released a Windows Mobile 5.0 upgrade which works - according to Destinator - at least with the HTC Universal and HTC Wizard. However, I can confirm it's also working well with the latest E-Ten M600 Windows Mobile 5.0 ROM.

Nevertheless, even if Destinator PM is supporting the HTC Universal now and therefore it is supporting VGA screens, maps and menus still looks a little bit "stretched"and I hope to see this fixed soon also.
