COOPERATION: Chunghwa Telecom teams with Microsoft, HTC and Dopod to launch a 3G Windows Mobile device
Posted by Arne Hess - at 16:15 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

As DigiTimes reports today, Taiwanese Chunghwa Telecom (CHT) yesterday signed an agreement with Microsoft, HTC and Dopod International to launch a high-end 3G PDA phone in Taiwan in June. Unfortunately it wasn't mentioned, which device the high-end 3G PDA might be but it can be expected, that it is HTC's Hermes device (also known as T-Mobile MDA Vario II and O2 Xda trion).
While the 3G PDA phone will be manufactured by HTC and marketed by Dopod, it will run on Microsoft's Window Mobile OS but the even more interesting part of the new is the fact, that beside it will features push E-Mail (MSFP) it will also supports RSS functionalities and a Chinese interface made to CHT's specifications, according to sources at CHT.

As O2 Germany announced today, the German operator has released its best-selling Pocket PC - the Xda neo - in a limited white edition.
Because of the previous Xda mini Limited Edition success, now the Xda neo is also "re-released" as a limited edition, this time in a kind of "white piano finishing".

First time, I wrote about Vodafone Germany's plans to carry the HTC Prophet as VPA compact s back in March, when I spotted the Prophet at Vodafone's CeBIT stand and now it's available from the German operator.
The Vodafone VPA compact s is based on HTC's Prophet Pocket PC Phone Edition and features Windows Mobile 5.0, quad-band GSM, GPRS and EDGE, Bluetooth, W-LAN and a 2 megapixel camera.

Posted by Arne Hess - at 15:47 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

As HTC revealed in its Qtek 8500 FAQ, at least two European operators are expected to release the Qtek 8500 (aka HTC Star Trek/STRTrk) during this Spring as well: Orange NL and Amena in Spain.
According to the FAQ, Amena will provide its own SKU from week four of May while Orange will ship its own SKU from week four of June (more than one months later).
At the moment it's not clear if Orange NL will be the only Orange subsidiary which will take the Star Trek or if other Orange subsidiaries will follow as well. Also it's unknown yet, if Orange will take it as Qtek 8500 or if the operator (who was the first who introduced a Windows Mobile Smartphone) will rebrand it as SPV:

RELEASE: The Qtek 8500 aka HTC Star Trek Windows Mobile Smartphone debuts in Europe
Posted by Arne Hess - at 10:39 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Today, HTC has announced that it will release its HTC Star Trek (which is the same device which was announced last week in Far East as Dopod S300) under its Qtek brand in Europe first. HTC's first clamshell Windows Mobile Smartphone is sporting quad-band GSM, GPRS and EDGE, communicates in short-range via Bluetooth (but misses IrDA), weights only 99 grams with battery and touts a breath-taking 16mm with a build-in 1.3-megapixel camera and dedicated music control buttons.
But the Qtek 8500 is not an ordinary clamshell phone only. It's powered by Microsoft's latest Windows Mobile 5.0 and running with a TI OMAP CPU at 200 MHz. It has 64 MB RAM and 64 MB ROM. The main 2.2" TFT LCD with LED backlight gives you crystal clear, crisp and vibrant image and colors. EXCLUSIVE: O2 Germany to release the HTC Hermes Pocket PC Phone Edition also
Posted by Arne Hess - at 19:43 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

I've just received an interesting anonymous E-Mail with some even more (unfortunately grainy) the::unwired exclusive (as the mailer said) photos inside which shows an O2 Xda labeled HTC Hermes!
I mean it was - more or less - clear that O2 is also going to launch this UMTS beauty but it wasn't confirmed as of today. Since the keyboard shows a QWERTZ layout, I expect it's an O2 Germany Hermes (and the E-Mail hasn't mentioned anything about O2 UK).
Also it shows the two extra Hermes buttons, the Start and OK button, I already photographed back on CeBIT:

APPROVED: The Pantech PC-8200N Windows Mobile Smartphone got the FCC approval
Posted by Arne Hess - at 15:18 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Is Pantech, the second largest Korean mobile phone manufacture (behind Samsung but before LG) entering the Windows Mobile Smartphone market as well now?
According to the FCC it looks like. The Pantech PC-8200N just received the FCC approval which is required to release a device in the U.S. And it looks like Pantech already found a customer for the device - Verizon. At least the test-sample's, the FCC used, are Verizon branded.
If it is a Verizon phone, it's not a GSM phone, that's clear and also the antenna doesn't looks GSM'ish anymore:

UPDATE: O2 Asia released AKU 2 ROM update for the Xda Atom
Posted by Arne Hess - at 11:58 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Now also O2 Asia and its exclusive Xda Atom. This ROM update consolidates all the new/previous enhancements and fixes into a single ROM update image which provides improvements to overall performance and quality in system software, application software and GSM radio firmware.
The most important enhancements are the support of Microsoft's Windows Mobile 5.0 AKU 2 including Messaging & Security Feature Pack (MSFP) supporting direct push technology as well as general browser performance improvements and a new Wireless Manager application to provide easy configuration of wireless LAN, Bluetooth and GSM/GPRS/EDGE phone for users.
While the A2DP Bluetooth stereo support isn't mentioned explicit, I expect it's still there, since it was part of the previous ROM versions alreay.

And the next one. Dopod International recently introduced its AKU 2 push-mail updates for the entire range of Windows Mobile 5 Pocket PC Phone Edition models, currently available from Dopod. This includes the Dopod 900, 838 and 818 Pro.
Push mail technology is set to further enhance Outlook efficiency, cut down clutter and greatly improve mobility. Dopod users can now receive an E-Mail simultaneously on their PCs and Dopod PDA phones with little or no delays. Users can check their latest E-Mails and update their schedules, stay contactable while on the go and manage workloads effortlessly.
However, as with most AKU 2 updates, it seems that also the Dopod ROM updates misses the A2DP Bluetooth stereo profile, originally introduced by Microsoft for AKU 2.
