RELEASE: O2 Germany close to launch the O2 Xda trion Pocket PC Phone Edition
Posted by Arne Hess - at 13:59 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

This week I've received the notification from O2 Germany, that the German GSM and UMTS carrier is close to launch it's O2 Xda trion, also known as HTC Hermes.
Therefore - after CHT, who launched the Hermes two days ago in Taiwan - it seems O2 Germany is the second mobile operator worldwide and the first European operator, to introduce the Hermes.
And O2 Germany already proved, that they are ready to launch their latest Xda since O2 was kind enough, to send me a final device - with the final ROM build - for reviewing it on the::unwired. While the device, I've received yesterday, doesn't includes any CD-ROMs with additional software nor it includes any manuals, it's the final hardware and the splash screen doesn't has the typical "For Test Only" notification anymore:

AVAILABLE: Chunghwa Telecom (CHT) launched the CHT 9000 aka HTC Hermes
Posted by Arne Hess - at 14:13 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

As announced last month, yesterday Taiwanese mobile operator Chunghwa Telecom (CHT) launched its own-brand CHT 9000 3G Windows Mobile Pocket PC Phone Edition and therefore CHT is the first operator, which introduced the HTC Hermes commercially.
The CHT 9000, which runs on Microsoft's Windows Mobile 5.0 OS is sporting tri-band UMTS, quad-band GSM, GPRS and EDGE as well as W-LAN and Bluetooth, features a 2 megapixel camera for photos and videos as well as a QCIF camera on the front for video telephony. It seems to got some tweaks from HTC since it also features a RSS reader, which isn't a standard application for Windows Mobile devices (yet).
The CHT 9000, which is - as reported before already - manufactured by HTC and distributed by Dopod International , is targeting the business sector (is RSS such a business application in Taiwan).

LINK: iDo S601 Pocket PC Phone Edition reviewed by iDo User Forum
Posted by Arne Hess - at 19:17 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

It's quite a while, that I wrote about the iDo S600 Pocket PC Phone Edition from Taiwanese manufacture Kimpo and in the meantime, Kimpo already released the iDo S601 (which I have totally overseen and which is even not announced on Kimpo's website). The iDo S601 is the last Pocket PC Phone Edition Kinpo, not very well known in European or the U.S. but guys from the newly launched iDo User Forum just got their hands on an iDo S601 and wrote a review (PDF File). Compared to S600, the S601 uses the latest Windows Mobile 5 operating system (contrary to the S600 which was using Windows Mobile 2003 only) and supports in addition to GSM and GPRS Wi-Fi.

CONFIRMED: T-Mobile UK to launch the HTC Hermes - most probably
Posted by Arne Hess - at 13:21 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

According to an article at Computer Business Review - which was basically about T-Mobile's HSDPA launch in the UK - Ron Langton, data marketing manager for T-Mobile (UK) recently confirmed, that the UK carrier will launch a HTC-based and HSDPA-enabled devices later this year.
However, it wasn't confirmed yet that it is the HSDPA-enabled HTC Hermes (aka T-Mobile Germany's T-Mobile MDA Vario II) indeed but since HTC hasn't announced any other HSDPA-enabled devices yet, nor any other ODMs have announced HSDPA-enabled Windows Mobile devices so far (and he said it's an HTC device), it must be the HTC Hermes:

UTILITY: Word Completion Dictionary Editor for Windows Mobile Pocket PCs
Posted by Heinz Burkart - at 15:38 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

If it comes to data input, the Pocket PC has a handy internal dictionary for the word completion function. This is useful since it lets you select from predefined words instead of entering the whole word with the soft keyboard and it works by creating a list of words while writing text and so helps the user writing faster. The Pocket PC learns new words as you write them but you have no influence how or when.

With the Word Completion Dictionary Editor you can now edit or create the word completion list and even add your own new words. Technically, the Pocket PC stores the list of words in two files: dyncompdict.dat and dyncompdict.tmp. But even the developer of Word Completion Dictionary Editor can't explain why there are two files and what they are good for. Nevertheless, it works (at least with the main list).

Beside getting his hands on a Motorola SLVR look-alike Windows Mobile Smartphone, Stephan Schmidt of Smartphone-Web also got his hands on a (this time infamous) copy of the Samsung SGH-i320 Windows Mobile Smartphone, also developed and manufactured by TechFaith Wireless.
However, unlike the i320, which is using Microsoft's Windows Mobile Smartphone operating system, without a touch screen, this device is based on Microsoft's Windows Mobile for Pocket PCs and therefore it supports touch screen input with a stylus, using a landscape display (while the resolution of the display wasn't mentioned yet):

According to Edward Wang, TechFaith Wireless signed an MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) with Microsoft to start developing and manufacturing Windows Mobile based devices also and the first shot is an eye-catcher already: a Motorola SLVR look-alike Windows Mobile Smartphone which features impressive 512 MB memory! The tri-band GSM phone is also expected to have a 1.3 megapixel camera, should supports miniSD memory cards but uses - unfortunately - a small 176x220 65k TFT screen only:

RUMOR: Is Samsung redesigning the SGH-I320 Windows Mobile Smartphone?
Posted by Arne Hess - at 16:29 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

I have told you before, that the Samsung SGH-I320 isn't dead at all, even if it became silent after the 3GSM Congress but the latest photos indicates, that a) some of the devices used for the shooting were either pretty old or b) what I believe even more (also because I have heard about this before but never got a proof) that Samsung took the time to redesign the SGH-I320, Samsungs competitor to the Motorola Q and BlackBerry devices.

So let us have a look on these two photos, I've taken from Akihabara News. As you can see on the left photo, the device seems to be the same but the overall shape of the ID is slightly different. Also the keys are different, which is even more important, because the keyboard layout of the left device (on the left picture) and the device on the right picture reminds pretty much on the keyboard layout or the Motorola Q (picture bellow):

UNVEILED: HTC to work on a new Windows Mobile Smartphone called HTC Oxygen
Posted by Arne Hess - at 15:12 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

While I even haven't heard about this device rumor-wise before, was even able to get two photos of a new HTC Smartphone which is called "HTC Oxygen". While it doesn't seems to be anything special or fancy, the specs are looking solid, at least for a low-end Smartphone. The HTC Oxygene is a candybar device with 64 MB ROM and 64 MB RAM, powered by Windows Mobile 5 and is sporting an 1.3 megapixel camera. As all HTC's Smartphones, also the Oxygen is featuring a TI OMAP850 CPU with 200 Mhz.
Why a low-end Smartphone only? Because it's featuring a uncommon - for today's Windows Mobile Smartphones - 176 x 220 screen only and no word about W-LAN support. But anyway, design-wise it's not too bad at all:

Unfortunately the device will not be sold within the UK, this will be sold within Germany and possibly other parts of Europe although will not be in the UK device.
