THOUGHT: Are we ready to say goodbye to the IrDA port?
Posted by Carlo Guerrero - at 19:44 CET under 09 - Thoughts

Some may find it funny. Some may find it sad. Some may not care at all. But now that we are faced with the reality that the IrDA port's life is nearing its end, should we just go with the flow and let the device manufacturer dictate what we should have or shouldn't have?

The closest rival of the IrDA port is Bluetooth. But even Bluetooth doesn't come close enough to the simplicity and robustness of the Infrared system of connecting devices. I'm sure a lot of you out there have experienced connecting two devices over both systems - Infrared and Bluetooth. While Bluetooth is definitely the more advanced of the two systems, it still pales in comparison in the ease of use and practicality of Infrared.

THOUGHT: Palm OS is Dead [unwired::cast]
Posted by Alfredo Padilla - at 22:52 CET under 09 - Thoughts

This week we saw the release of the new Palm Treo device, the Treo 750v. This article isn’t going to be about this phone in particular, but I did want to mention that despite some flaws I think it looks like a great device and is definitely on my radar for when I upgrade. What I did want to speak about is the operating system that isn’t on the device, Palm OS.

Because I was excited about the 750v I’ve been reading some Treo centric web sites recently to get the scoop and because I enjoy hearing other peoples’ thoughts. I must say that I wasn’t expecting the amount of hand wringing and consternation that I encountered. Now, I understand that forums are generally places that people go to complain or to rave about something, but I frankly did not expect the number of complaints.

PODCAST: First unwired::cast Round Table Discussion!
Posted by Alfredo Padilla - at 09:45 CET under 09 - Thoughts

Well folks, we told you it was coming, and here it is. This week Thomas Chan and I walk you through the latest news in the Windows Mobile world in the::unwired's first unwired::cast Round Table. I hope you enjoy the next 30 or so minutes of audio goodness!

I know this podcast is probably a little rough around the edges, we hope to get better as we move forward. You will continue to get an unwired::cast from me on a weekly basis, and we will try to get a round table discussion out to you once a month. Feedback in the comments would be much appreciated.

THOUGHT: My Perfect Device [unwired::cast]
Posted by Alfredo Padilla - at 01:18 CET under 09 - Thoughts

One of the nice things about having a forum like this to write in is that you can go on about your random thoughts and people will pay attention (or at least you hope they do). So today I’m going to expand on a topic I touched on in my introduction, my perfect device. (As always download the unwired::cast at the bottom of the article)

Now like all cell phone geeks, of course I would like to have the ultimate device with every possible technology built into a small and portable handset. Since that won’t result in much of a column I instead will take a different approach. I am going to organize the features I want into three categories and then analyze the devices available to see which ones most closely fit my requirements. I will also be asking all of you to share your opinion.
