AVAILABLE: Vodafone Germany released the HTC Herald as VPA compact IV
Posted by Arne Hess - at 15:21 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

From today, Vodafone Germany is selling the HTC Herald Windows Mobile Pocket PC Phone Edition as VPA compact IV.
The HTC Herald is, more or less, HTC's 2.5G follower of the HTC Wizard, since both devices supports 2.5G only but not 3G and both features a slide-out keyboard - while the Herald features a semi-automatic sliding mechanism now.
Other features and improvements are that the Herald is just 17 mm thick, hosts a large internal memory of 128 MB ROM and 64 MB RAM and the Herald is a true international roamer since it supports  quadband GSM/GPRS/EDGE as well as it supports Bluetooth and WiFi b/g - for sure.

RUMOR: Is Tatung jumping the Windows Mobile UMPC Bandwagon too?
Posted by Arne Hess - at 14:52 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Not too much information are available yet but speculations are circulating through the net, that Tatung also plans to release a Windows Mobile-based UMPC look-alike Pocket PC. That's even more interesting, after the HTC Athena appeared first time and was confirmed a little bit later, since the original UMPC design was based on Windows XP but now, UMPC is used as synonym for high-end Pocket PCs.
While not to much information is available about the Tatung UMPC project, some photos surfaced which seems to be, nevertheless, from the last COMPUTEX in Taiwan.
Therefore it's speculated, that we will see and hear more at CES in Las Vegas, early January:

The new SlingPlayer Mobile for Windows Mobile Smartphone v1.0.5 solved the problem now that also the latest Windows Mobile Smartphones are supported now!

Okay, now it's getting serious. After my yesterday's posting about HTC's new super Windows Mobile Pocket PC Phone Edition, today we got the first real photos, no more renderings as we got it before.
Also it looks like all the specs, I wrote about seems to be confirmed.
PDAclub.pl took it to the extreme and published today 10 high resolution photos and for me it definitely looks like the HTC Athena has the potential to become the 2007 Pocket PC Phone Edition.
Even if it is running Windows Mobile, the device looks way more like a Microsoft UMPC:

I have some news for you regarding HTC Athena. The picture is true but the published specs are not.

The Xda Apollo is the true follower of the Xda Atom and like the Atom, the Apollo is also small but feature rich with its 2 megapixel camera and the unbelievable 1 GB ROM.

In his E-Mail, MrPalm.com editor Peter wrote: "Speed is very fast and stable and it comes with 2 cameras on back and front. The body is a bit bigger than O2 Atom exec."
