EDITORIAL: Microsoft needs to reconsider its 3GPP support for Windows Mobile
Posted by Arne Hess - at 12:11 CET under 09 - Thoughts

Just another thought I came across while I was in vacation last week. I think Microsoft definitely needs to rethink it's media file support. I understand that Microsoft wants to push WMx (WMA for audio and WMV for video) and MP3 is just supported because it's the defacto standard anyway. But we have another defacto standard (in the mobile industry) which is 3GP (a MPEG-4 based media format) from the 3GPP (the 3rd Generation Partner Project) which is the industry standard for video MMS but also the standard for UMTS video streaming. And no, I'm not just talking about YouTube here but watch the carrier portals, they all offer videos in 3GP format as well as we see more and more independent video content popping-up in 3GP since mostly every 3G phone (except Windows Mobiles) supports 3GP as the video streaming file format.

THOUGHT: Be careful if you are using Windows Mobile's Windows Live Messenger Mobile
Posted by Arne Hess - at 12:48 CET under 09 - Thoughts

Long time ago, I've ranted about the MSN Mobile Messenger and how unhappy I was, that Microsoft's MSN Messenger was so yesterday because it didn't support emoticons, file transfer, etc - all the latest stuff MSN Messenger for the PC (which is now called Windows Live Messenger) supported.
Then the first Windows Live Messenger Mobile appeared in a closed Beta and I was pretty amazed about the features (in the first Beta) and looked forward the final version which is now available for Windows Mobile devices (as long as the carrier didn't opt-out).

THOUGHT: Where is Palm's announced Windows Mobile 6 upgrade for the Treo 750?
Posted by Arne Hess - at 18:10 CET under 09 - Thoughts

Following my earlier rant about HTC's Windows Mobile 6 upgrade availability I got a good amount of E-Mails where you guys asked where Palm's Treo 750 Windows Mobile 6 upgrade is and to be honest - I have no clue. One thing is for sure - it exists and during the 3GSM World Congress it was announced by Microsoft as well as later by Palm to be available later this year.
Well, half of the year is gone already and still now word from Palm if it will be released and when. Sure, the Windows Mobile 6 upgrade would add some great value to the Treo 750 which is a great messaging device and since Windows Mobile 6 includes support for HTML mail as well as Windows Live Messenger - it could be the perfect combination:
