Nice, Palm's PR agency just sent over a brand new Palm Treo 500v Windows Mobile smartphone which Palm announced two weeks ago with Vodafone.
While I've just got it 10 minutes ago, soon I will be able to answer your questions (you can ask in the comments bellow). The Palm Treo 500v smartphone runs on a Windows Mobile 6 Standard platform and has a full QWERTY (in this case the German QWERTZ) keyboard, QVGA screen and supports triband GSM/GPRS with 900/1800/199 MHz and singleband UMTS with 2100 MHz (no HSDPA). PLACE-SHIFT: Sling Media announces the new Slingbox SOLO for US, Canada and the UK [UPDATE]
Posted by Arne Hess - at 03:01 CET under 01 - General News

No question, most of you know that I'm a big fan of Sling Media's Slingbox (which I'm using nearly every day) and therefore I'm even happier to tell you, that Sling Media just announced its brand-new Slingbox SOLO. The Slingbox SOLO is SlingMedia's first worldwide model which is simultaneously launching in the US (US$ 179.99), Canada (CAD$ 199.99) and the UK (£ 129.99).
The new key elements of the SOLO are: Integrated support for component video, pass-through or "looping" outputs and refreshed design. The Slingbox SOLO is, more or less a feature enhanced refresh of the Slinbox AV which also came, like the Slingbox SOLO without an inbuilt tuner but requires either a set-top or any other A/V source from an input device:

UNVEILED: Dopod C750 shows its face - an indication for T-Mobile's HTC Juno?
Posted by Arne Hess - at 08:59 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Not too much is known about this smartphone which is called Dopod C750, except that it looks like the previously rumored HTC Juno which is expected to be released by T-Mobile U.S.. It's running Windows Mobile 6 Standard, this is clear, but, according to the original source, it's also sporting a VGA screen at 480 x 640 pixel (as far as I know it's the first Windows Mobile Standard phone with VGA).
Furthermore it seems confirmed that the slide-out keyboard is this kind of BlackBerry-like "SureType" keypad we have seen on the T-Mobile Juno rendering before:

Posted by Arne Hess - at 20:10 CET under 01 - General News

How much battery life do I really have left? Texas Instruments Incorporated wants to answer the question by introducing its system-side fuel gauge integrated circuit (IC) with Impedance Track technology for smart phones and other handhelds. The 2.5 mm x 4 mm gauge predicts battery life with 99-percent accuracy to extend run-time, protect data and provide a better user experience for mobile handheld users.
The bq27500 system-side battery fuel gauge with TI's patented Impedance Track technology accurately measures data from a device's single-cell Li-Ion battery to predict remaining battery capacity under all conditions, even as a battery ages.

EVENT: HTC to unveil its Q4 Windows Mobile range next week
Posted by Arne Hess - at 19:11 CET under 01 - General News

There are some real chances that we will learn more about HTC's recently unveiled HTC Kii soon. The Taiwanese handset maker just invited the press to its two European events in the UK (Monday, October 1st) and Germany (Tuesday, October 2nd) to officially unveil its Q4-2007 line-up of Windows Mobile smartphones.
While HTC hasn't given any further information of what we can expect, I'm sure we will see (again) some familiar faces like the HTC Shift, maybe the HTC Nike (which was already announced in Japan as NTT DoCoMo FOMA HT1100) and most likely HTC's new flagship smartphone, the HTC TyTN II (which hasn't had it's launch event so far).

The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) just unveiled another so far unknown HTC smartphone, the "HTC Kii" which must be - according to the Bluetooth SIG documents - a non-touch screen Windows Mobile Standard smartphone (because it is listed as a "Smart Phone", like the HTC Breeze or HTC Vox).
Basically nothing else is known about the device but since it's from HTC it can be expected to sport any version of Windows Mobile Standard and it's confirmed that the HTC Kii supports Bluetooth 2.0+EDR:

UNCOVERED: Samsung SGH-i640 Windows Mobile Smartphone shows its Face and Specs

Unveiled with the Vodafone Christmas line-up announcement, not too much was known about Vodafone's new co-branded Samsung SGH-i640v Windows Mobile 6 Standard Smartphone, which looks like a design-upgrade to the Samsung SGH-i620.
However, it seems the i640 is far more than just a design-upgraded i620 since it is expected to sport features, the i620 was badly missing, including WiFi and even GPS! And it's sporting Vodafone's new Home screen implementation we have seen on the Palm Treo 500v before already.

Just in time with my review of the German version of the O2 Xda Atom Life, CNet Asia compared O2's latest working horse with HTC's (not yet anywhere outside APAC announced or released) Windows Mobile 6 upgraded P3600i.
CNet Asia's judges are Senior writer Damian Koh who doesn't understand what the hype about the Apple iPhone is about, but heck, if it looks good, it must be good. And senior writer John Chan who loves QWERTY keyboards because he claims having one makes typing messages faster:

REVIEW: O2 Xda comet Windows Mobile 6 Professional PDA Phone
Posted by Arne Hess - at 12:43 CET under 08 - Reviews

During the past days, I had the pleasure to use O2 Germany's latest Windows Mobile device, the soon to be released O2 Xda comet. While O2 Germany decided not to launch the HTC TyTN II (HTC Kaiser), it decided to release another follower of last year's released Xda trion (aka HTC Hermes) and unlike the HTC Hermes and and HTC Kaiser, the O2 Xda comet is a quite "traditional" Pocket PC Phone Edition, without sporting a thumb-keyboard but touch-screen focused only. As you might have read already, the O2 Xda comet isn't a brand new device anymore, since sprig it's available in Asia as the O2 Xda Atom Life already and O2 Germany decided to pick-up O2 Asia's top product to sell it in Germany now as well.

REGISTRATION: Sling Media makes device change easier and more convenient
Posted by Arne Hess - at 20:26 CET under 01 - General News

While Sling Media's SlingPlayer is free of charge for PCs and Macs, the SlingPlayer Mobile client for Windows Mobile Smartphones and Pocket PCs costs 19.99 GBP/US$ 29.99 each.
No question, the SlingPlayer Mobile is worth the money (especially if you are traveling or  commuting) but in the past it was some hassle to move the key to one device to another (of the same platform - Pocket PC to Pocket PC and Smartphone to Smartphone).
The registration key includes two parts - an E-Mail address and a numerical key and so far, you had to contact the customer service to get a new key generated because each SlingPlayer Mobile license is valid to be used on one device only.

UNVEILED: Is Samsung releasing a BlackJack look-alike Pocket PC Phone Edition? [UPDATE]
Posted by Arne Hess - at 19:47 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Pocket PC Thoughts has spotted a YouTube video which shows a demo of a Treo 750-like Samsung Windows Mobile 6 Professional smartphone, recorded during the Gitex earlier this month.
While one of the highlighted features is a navigable mouse pointer controlled by some "scroller" mechanism underneath the screen, I can see even more interesting features:
It's sporting the Orange typical Home screen design (should this be an indication that Orange is going to launch this unknown beauty?) and furthermore the touch screen is plain to the housing (think of a HTC Touch) which makes this device looking like a non-touch screen device (on the first sight):

Due to the ever-increasing world of technology, this tiny GPS receiver, weighing in at a tiny 30 grams, comes with the latest of GPS technology.

REVIEW: O2 Xda Flame Windows Mobile Pocket PC Phone Edition

There is no doubt about the importance O2 put on its customers, with the nice packaging and attention to detail; it clearly shows what they have to offer. The magnetic flip up box, for starters, is already a welcome sign that you have just purchased a quality device. It also provides you with a short list of what is included in the package.

The Package - What's in the box? Of course you have the main unit with battery and power adaptor, a USB sync cable, a USB host cable, a stereo wired headset, a spare stylus, the TV-out cable, and the standard CD, User's Manual, Quick Start Guide and warranty statement.

I know, you love device photos as much as I do and while I hadn't had too much time for my first series of photos on Tuesday, today I've spent my second 30 minutes with the recently released Palm Treo 500v to snap some more photos for you.
Unfortunately I don't have a device yet to review it here, but I got promised to get one soon that I can follow up with a review ASAP. I have to admit that the more time I spend with Palm's latest Windows Mobile device (and its first Windows Mobile 6 Standard smartphone), the more I like it. Sure, it misses some (for me important) features but I'm not the benchmark here. Far from it; if it is well priced, I see a bright future for it.

VIDEOVIEW: Hands-on Video of the new Palm Treo 500v Home Screen Navigation
Posted by Arne Hess - at 15:48 CET under 08 - Reviews

While the new Treo 500v doesn't includes too much customized software, as we have seen it before with the Palm Treo 750 and 750v, the Treo 500v features one innovation which is a completely redesigned Home screen layout and menu structure.
It's quite similar to the Samsung SGH-i600 Home screen carousel but it's different. First of all, the Home screen main navigation is left/right not up/down where tasks can be selected by navigation up/down later. However, unlike Samsung's Home screen carousel, which stays on the screen, the Vodafone menu is hidden on the first sight but it's activated by pressing the Start button.

Okay, beside taking the time to make some photos of Palm's new Treo 500v, I had also some time to record a couple of videos to give you a better impression and overview how Vodafone's new Palm looks and feels.
As you can see in the video bellow, the Treo 500v isn't that big and I would say it's similar sized to the Samsung SGH-i600 or the original Motorola Q.
The white housing is a kind of "nacre" shimmering white, so it's not too similar to the initial Apple iPod white, if we can take this as a reference here and therefore you don't get all the fingerprints on the device:

During today's Palm Press Conference in Munich, I had the first chance to get my hands on the brand new Palm Treo 500v, which Palm announced today for some parts of Europe and South Africa. One thing in advance, Palm and Vodafone are targeting the consumer mass-market with the device and therefore it cannot compete with similar Windows Mobile Smartphones like the Samsung SGH-i600 which has a better feature-set but is also more expensive. No, Vodafone is expected to price the device fairly low and therefore, I'm sure, the Palm Treo 500v will find its customers as well. At least it's not so bad looking as many thought first:

This means, if you own a Windows XP Media Center or Windows Vista Media Center, you can get it free of charge now to stream and place shift your live TV, your videos and DVDs as well as view your photos and listen your music, from virtually any Internet connected PC as well as Internet connected Windows Mobile device.

THOUGHT: Touch - the Industry's new Buzz Word?
Posted by Arne Hess - at 13:49 CET under 09 - Thoughts

Looks like the mobile devices industry is going crazy over a simple word: Touch. Sure, touch has something warm, personal and maybe even romantic and I can understand why HTC gave the HTC Elf the commercial name HTC Touch.
However, now even Apple released a "Touch"-product - in this case the iPod touch which makes sense as well; both devices - the HTC Touch and the iPod touch - have one thing in common - the touch display which is used to use the device - more or less (no - I don't want to wonder now why the iPhone isn't called iPhone Touch as well - that's a total different story).

LINK: ce4arab gives the i-mate Ultimate 8150 a first test
Posted by Arne Hess - at 11:08 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Not that I understand too much but Mohd got his hands on a brand new i-mate Ultimate 8150 and has uploaded many photos and screenshots to the Arabian ce4arab forum.
Looks like the Ultimate 8150 becomes finally available, at least that's what i-mate confirmed before as well.
Feature-wise the Ultimate 8150 seems to be an interesting Windows Mobile 6 Professional smartphone but I'm not sure if I like the design. It looks a little bit too techie and I don't like the position of the joystick:

Posted by Arne Hess - at 09:59 CET under 01 - General News

In a blog posting in Palm's official company blog, Ed Colligan himself, CEO of Palm, yesterday announced the end of the Palm Foleo Smartphone Companion. Interesting enough, the end came before it started. Colligan wrote that it has become clear that the right path for Palm is to offer a single, consistent user experience around Palm's next generation software platform and focus for the new platform development. Of course, Palm will continue to develop products in partnership with Microsoft on the Windows Mobile platform, but from the internal platform development perspective, Palm will focus on only one and that's not the Linux based Foleo - not yet:

Just in time with today's expected announcement of the O2 Xda comet, this morning I found a brand new Xda comet on my doorstep, courtesy of O2 Germany. Just unveiled recently, the Xda comet is O2 Germany's latest Windows Mobile powered smartphone but Asian readers of the::unwired know the device already - it's an updated O2 Xda Atom Life.
Powered by Windows Mobile 6 Professional, the O2 Xda comet supplements O2 Germany's Xda trion (aka HTC TyTN/HTC Hermes) but unlike all the German Xda's before, this device is manufactured by Quanta.

APPROVAL: O2 Xda Denim Windows Mobile Smartphone clears FCC
Posted by Arne Hess - at 09:13 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

We have seen the O2 Windows Mobile 6 Professional smartphone code-named "Helen" first time back in June and as the FCC recently unveiled, it's now called "O2 Xda Denim".
Manufactured by Taiwanese Gigabyte, the Xda Denim is O2's latest Windows Mobile smartphone, featuring Windows Mobile 6 Professional and therefore sports a 2.6" touch screen, displaying 65K colors at 240 x 320 pixel. Even more interesting is the slider design and the location of the D-Pad. The 12 key phone pad is between the screen (top) and D-Pad (bottom) and hides if closed which seems to make this device pretty compact:

RUMOR: Are the new HP Smartphones based on OKWAP and manufactured by Inventec?
Posted by Arne Hess - at 19:35 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Do you know OKWAP? No? Me neither - not really. We have read about OKWAP's prototypes earlier this year but haven't heard about it furthermore. Now rumors are floating through the net that HP's recently unveiled iPAQs are on the earlier unveiled OKWAP prototypes and if you compare the following pictures, it seems to be true.

First of all, let us start with the iPAQ 600 which sports a kind of "virtual scroll wheel" and I've found something adequate at iTech News Net:

THOUGHT: Broadcast your personal Media to Windows Mobile and Notebooks in parallel
Posted by Arne Hess - at 14:49 CET under 09 - Thoughts

If you are a regular reader of the::unwired, you know that one of my favorite usage scenarios is place shifting my media - either to my Windows Mobile devices, if I'm commuting, or to my Notebook, if I'm stationary but away from home.
Well, yesterday I've watched with my girlfriend a TV recording which we streamed to a Notebook from my Windows Vista Media Center at home, using WebGuide4 (see my previous WebGuide4 with Windows Mobile review here). Since it got later and we had an appointment later the day, I wanted to take a bath without interrupting the strea, especially because my girlfriend wanted to finish watching the recording and also I didn't want to stop watching.
