RUMOR: HTC Hero to get an Android 2.1 Upgrade?
Posted by Arne Hess - at 09:41 CET under 04 - Android News

While Google's Android 2.0 is still pretty new and so far only one handset is running it (in the US it's the Motorola Droid/in Europe it's the Motorola Milestone), it's widely known/expected that Google is working on the follower already - most probably called Android 2.1 (code-named Flan). And while HTC confirmed that it will release an Android 2.0/Eclair upgrade for the HTC Hero, HTC might even skip Android 2.0 in favor of Android 2.1. Over the weekend, a couple of screenshots appeared, which seems to show a Hero Android 2.1 ROM with HTC Sense integration:

SITE: Some the::unwired RSS Feed, Twitter and Facebook Updates
Posted by Arne Hess - at 18:26 CET under 06 - Site News

Alright, thanks to Thanksgiving and today's black Friday, it seems to be a slow news day. Therefore I spent half the day with optimizing the backend database and doing some code-changes and updates I planned for a long time already. The maybe most important code-change is an upgrade of the::unwired's RSS feed. We introduced our RSS feed back in 2003 already (when the::unwired was called PPCW.Net), long time before it became really popular. However, it was always a pretty clean (not to say boring) RSS feed, without any pictures or links but just the basic version of the front-page article. While we are still not publishing the full article as an RSS feed (someone has to visit the site that we get our bills paid ;-), the new RSS feed now features the teaser graphic as well as links to related articles or tags:

UPGRADE: Windows Mobile 6.5 "Second Edition" is real but yet Unnamed and Unannounced
Posted by Arne Hess - at 17:32 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Some weeks ago, I wrote about an expected upcoming Windows Mobile 6.5 version which I called that time "Windows Mobile 6.5 Second Edition". And so far, everything was completely unconfirmed, but now it seems that Microsoft is indeed working on an update of its recently launched Windows Mobile 6.5 Windows phone operating system. Mordy Gilden from mopocket just had a rare opportunity to speak with a Microsoft representative while visiting a Microsoft booth at a tech showcase event. When the Microsoft representative was asked about "Windows Mobile 6.5.1" he answered many of Mordy's questions, although he politely asked not to print his name.

PETITION: Submission calls Samsung to Upgrade the Samsung Galaxy to Android 2.0
Posted by Arne Hess - at 11:49 CET under 04 - Android News

When the Samsung Galaxy was announced earlier this year, it was quite a state-of-the-art Android smartphone, at time of the launch it ran the brand new Android 1.5/Cupcake OS and featured a unique AMOLED touchscreen and a 5 megapixel camera with flash (both first for Android). However, as time went bye, Google released Android 1.6/Donut and Android 2.0/Eclair and except minor bugfix releases, Samsung hasn't made any progress to either release the much overdue Android 1.6 update or the even worthier Android 2.0 upgrade.

While the Motorola Droid / Motorola Milestone isn't Motorola's first Android smartphone, it gets all the attention. However, the title of being Motorola's first Android smartphone deserves the Motorola Cliq / Motorola Dext, Motorola unveiled early September. The Motorola Cliq (for North America) / Motorola Dext (for Europe and Latin America) is a slider phone with software and a 4-row hardware keyboard that still runs on Android 1.5 (Cupcake). It features quadband GSM/GPRS/EDGE as well as triband UMTS/HSDPA at 900/1700/2100 MHz as well as Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, WiFi b/g, aGPS, a compass, proximity sensor and an ambient light sensor.

The new webOS version comes with a couple feature improvements while iTunes-support seems to be gone forever now. Also it's said that webOS 1.3.1 will not bring any great speed boosts, other features like support for LinkedIn and Yahoo!, which now appears as a calendar/contacts/IM account (like Google and Facebook) might be interesting and worth the upgrade anyway.
