Posted by Arne Hess - at 10:56 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

During yesterday's Engadget Show, Aaron Woodman, Director of the Mobile Communications Business and Consumer Experiences Product Management team at Microsoft, pulled off a surprise: He shortly demonstrated the - most likely - first real Windows Phone 7 Series smartphone, a prototype which comes from LG! So far, for instance at the recent Mobile World Congress, Microsoft only showed specially developed and designed demo hardware. But LG's Windows Phone 7 Series smartphone is real and will most likely hit the market later this Fall -  if everything goes well as the first Windows Phone 7 device.

RUMOR: ODMs free to offer Windows Phone 7 Series Upgrades for Windows Mobile Smartphones?
Posted by Arne Hess - at 19:51 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

While this is neither an official confirmation from Microsoft, nor an official statement from any of Microsoft's ODMs, in a recent Twitter Q&A, Microsoft UK's director of the UK Mobile Business Group Alex Reeve answered to the following question: "Will customers that have recently bought 6.5 handsets be able to upgrade to WP7 if their device meets minimum spec?" that "It's early days yet, and that's really for our hardware partners to think about." So like in the past - with previous Windows Mobile upgrades - Microsoft plays the ball back to the ODMs but could this be true? Could a HTC , a Toshiba or any other ODM offer upgrades to Windows Phone 7?

Following last year's roadmap leak of the Toshiba TG02, the Global Certification Forum just approved Toshiba's (most likely) next Windows phone. However, at this point it's not clear if last year's specs like the 4.1" WVGA touchscreen and 3.2 megapixel camera are still valid and with today's introduction of Windows Mobile 6.5.3 it's also unlikely that the TG02 will be launched with anything older that Microsoft's latest Windows Mobile version. Nevertheless, the GCF confirms that the TG02 will feature quadband GSM/GPRS/EDGE as well as dualband UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA at 900/2100 MHz which again makes a North American release unlikely.
