SHARING: Nokia releases public Beta of Play To for Windows Phone Lumia Smartphones
Posted by Arne Hess - at 11:10 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

One of the big disappointments in my Nokia Lumia 800 review was the missing DLNA support of the Lumia 800 because we all know that Nokia can do it better. Nevertheless, looks like Nokia also figured out that something was missing by now releasing a public Beta of "Play To for Windows Phone". With Play To, users can share their photos and videos from a Nokia Lumia Windows Phone with DLNA-capable devices over WLAN network, which can be a TV or just a Windows7 PC. Not yet supported is music sharing and streaming but Nokia already said on its blog, that a future release is going to support music sharing as well as Nokia plans to add a features which will allow the Lumia to act as a DLNA Media Server.

TRADEMARK: Microsoft registers NFC Trademark for Computers, Computer Peripherals and Software
Posted by Arne Hess - at 14:03 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Not that Microsoft has any major track-records in the NFC-field, it has recently registered a NFC trademark design which is registered for goods and services for "computers and computer peripherals featuring near field communication (NFC) connectivity; computer software for providing near field communication (NFC)". As a matter of fact this could be used for anything, from Windows (8) to Windows Phone (8) to accessories like mice or keyboards. For sure, the trademark isn't unveiling the purpose of this registration but if we keep in mind that Windows Phone is confirmed to support NFC and Google's Wallet payment service is NFC-based, I would guess that Microsoft will use this for Windows Phone as well, not just for its upcoming new desktop Windows.

Posted by Arne Hess - at 12:13 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Wunderlist for Windows Phone has been long requested and 6Wunderkinder, the makers of Wunderlist, has just dropped me an E-Mail to inform us that it is now available. Wunderlist already helped millions of people on other platforms to stay organized anywhere and anytime. It allows to share lists with friends and colleagues and, since it's cloud-based, jointly tackle tasks, or tackle them on your own from any of our supported devices. Whether it's a shopping list, a wish list or a project list, Wunderlist will help to conquer the day. Since Windows Phone comes with its unique Metro UI, Wunderlist for Windows Phone looks very different to what Wunderlist looks elsewhere.

CONFIRMED: Nokia has a Windows (Phone?) 8 Tablet in work
Posted by Arne Hess - at 11:33 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Is this backing-up the theory of Windows Phone 8-alike tablets? According the Finnish magazine Kauppalehti Optio which was brought-up by Reuters, Marko Ahtisaari, head of design at Nokia, has confirmed that he's working a third of his current time on a new Nokia tablet an is quoted with "We are working on it". According to Reuters and The Verge, he hasn't disclosed any further details, but given the fact that he's responsible for the software and hardware design, the amount of time he's dedicating to the Nokia tablet marks it out as a project well under development. The Verge continued that the most recent speculation are that Nokia's tablet in question is a 10", Qualcomm-powered Windows 8 slate.

RUMOR: Apollo - we might get an upgrade Problem or why Tango might be Windows Phone 7's last Dance [UPDATE]
Posted by Arne Hess - at 18:20 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Following yesterday's news that Microsoft is expected to call its Tango update "Windows Phone 7.5 Refresh", there is a good - or in this case - a bad chance that Tango will be the last major Windows Phone update for the first generation of Windows Phone 7 devices, Microsoft launched in October 2010. According to several unconfirmed information we've received during last month's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Microsoft will keep its minimum device requirements up and alive for Windows Phone Apollo, which is rumored to be called Windows Phone 8. While Windows Phone 7.x required single-core CPUs and a WVGA screen resolution, it's said that Windows Phone Apollo will require dual-core CPUs and a higher, more state-of-the-art, screen resolution.

NAMING: Microsoft to call Windows Phone's Tango update Windows Phone 7.5 Refresh
Posted by Arne Hess - at 17:55 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

According to Windows Phone Italy, which had the chance to sit together with Stefania Duico, the head of Windows Phone for Microsoft Italy, Microsoft plans to call its upcoming Tango update "Windows Phone 7.5 Refresh". If you remember, the initial release was called Windows Phone 7 which became Windows Phone 7.5 with last fall's Mango update. The expected "Refresh" name stands in a long history of weird mobile product names (maybe the most weirdest one was "Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition" which was available for "Pocket PC", "Pocket PC Phone Edition" and "Smartphone". Thankfully "Windows Phone 7.5 Refresh" sounds much nicer than "Windows Phone 7.5 Second Edition".

DISCONTINUED: Microsoft to discontinue Windows Marketplace for Mobile 6.x
Posted by Arne Hess - at 08:29 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Three years ago, at the Mobile World Congress 2009, Microsoft announced Windows Phone 6.5 which brought the Windows Marketplace to Windows Mobile for the first time. However, after Windows Mobile's Windows Phone 6.5 was - more or less - discontinued, Microsoft now decided that it's also time to discontinue its never really successful Windows Marketplace for Mobile. Therefore, it sent out yesterday a notification to its previous customers, informing them that it is discontinuing the Windows Marketplace for Mobile service for Windows Mobile 6.x beginning May 9, 2012, from when the Windows Mobile 6.x Marketplace service will no longer be available.
