PRO-TIP: Use Evernote to Store your non-Passbook Boarding Passes on your Smartphone
Posted by Arne Hess - at 15:19 CET under 09 - Thoughts

While Apple has really established quite a useful standard with its Passbook, Passbook passes can also used on Android smartphones, for instance with Attido Mobile's great PassWallet app I use a lot for my Lufthansa flights. However, there are still many airlines which are yet not offering Passbook boarding passes but often give a link to a mobile website only where the boarding pass can be accessed online. That's all good but it can be either expensive in international roaming or what happens if you don't have coverage or due to a network failure the mobile website isn't available? Well, there's a workaround I love to use and it involves Evernote!

TREND: Samsung goes Gold Editon - ready to launch two Gold colored Samsung Galaxy S4 in the Gulf Region
Posted by Arne Hess - at 13:34 CET under 04 - Android News

There was a time when white was the new black and nowadays, after Apple announced and launched the new iPhone 5S in gold, gold is the new white. No question that other manufacturers also watched how well this strategy worked out for Apple and it seems that Samsung is the first one now to officially jump the Gold bandwagon. As Samsung's Gulf Facebook unveiled two days ago, the Korean smartphone giant plans to launch two gold colored Samsung Galaxy S4 in the Gulf region. One is said to be "Gold Brown", the other is said to be "Gold Pink". However, according to the posted photo, it looks like these two are standard S4 colors where the silver frame was replaced by a gold frame.

SERVICE: Sixt myDriver releases Android App - Limousine Service in your Pocket
Posted by Arne Hess - at 13:09 CET under 04 - Android News

Limousine services are quite common in other countries, for instance I'm rarely taking a cab in the U.S. or a taxi in the U.K. but most times I'm there, I'm picked-up by some private limousine services. Not so in Germany (or other European countries) where limousine service are rare or often misunderstood to be something exclusive for the rich and famous. Nevertheless, German rental car service Sixt has launched earlier this year a service called "myDriver". MyDriver is said to be an affordable, premium limousine service that offers a reliable and comfortable alternative to a taxi. Already available in Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt, Cologne and other German cities, as well as in Zurich, Vienna and Paris, myDriver allows to be driven to the destination of choice at a guaranteed fixed price.

Ever, since Google announced and launched Android 4.3, smartphone owners all over the world are awaiting the upgrade. Now, Jason Mackenzie, President of HTC America, has spilled the beans that HTC One owners will get it soon - including HTC Sense 5.5. Starting with the North American HTC One Developer Edition, HTC seems to plan starting the roll-out end of this week, with Canada to follow-up end of this month. Furthermore Mackenzie unveiled that U.S. customers have to wait a little bit longer because HTC is still working with U.S. carriers to get the latest Android upgrade certified; but Mackenzie is optimistic (whatever it means). Unfortunately, still no word about Android 4.3 upgrades for either the rest of the world or HTC One mini.

DISCONTINUED: Skype retires Skype for Windows Phone 7 - Keeps it alive in Windows Phone Marketplace
Posted by Arne Hess - at 19:02 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

When Microsoft announced Windows Phone 8 and said that Windows Phone 7 devices won't be updateable to v8, it also said that it will take care about the future support of Windows Phone 7.8. Well, seems the clocks ran faster in Redmond than a 24 month contract, which locked many Windows Phone 7 users into a minimum duration. As Skype said today, Microsoft has the best platforms to enable Skype to build excellent experiences for their users. However, it seems that Windows Phone 7 isn't the best platform anymore. While the Windows Phone 8 platform is gaining good momentum in the marketplace, Skype announced that it's not planning to release further updates to Skype for Windows Phone 7.

ENHANCED: Germanwings Android App to be finally released in English [UPDATE]
Posted by Arne Hess - at 17:58 CET under 04 - Android News

Not yet available for public download, German low-cost carrier Germanwings, which has just recently overtaken most of Lufthansa's inner German and European flights (not departing/arriving in Frankfurt or Munich), has just announced that its Android app - launched back in July - should support English soon. The initial release only supported German, which doesn't make any sense for an airline, especially not if its Lufthansa's daughter-airline. However, according to Germanwings' English website, the new app version will also come with enhanced features. While the mentioned link to Passbook is most likely for the iOS version only, info on your upcoming flight and flights you're following will be shown on your personalized homepage.

RUMOR: Android 4.4 Kit Kat Tipped for October Launch - by Kit Kat
Posted by Arne Hess - at 20:16 CET under 04 - Android News

When Google announced earlier this month that Android 4.4 will be code-named Kit Kat, it hasn't given any further details. Neither were exact enhancements mentioned, nor has Google announced when Android 4.4 might be available. Now a Nestlé social media employee might have unveiled what we all were awaiting - the release date of Android 4.4 Kit Kat. On the German Kit Kat Facebook page, a user has asked "when Android 4.4 KitKat will be available" and "Kit Kat" answered "Android 4.4 KIT KAT is available from October". That's it - straight forward. Now we could argue that the social media employee was talking about the Kit Kat chocolate but this is already available in selected stores. Furthermore he/she mentioned Android 4.4 - not just Kit Kat.

UNVEILED: Jolla gives a Glimpse of the Hardware Specs of its first Sailfish OS Smartphone

So far, Jolla kept mum about the hardware specs of its first smartphone, which is still expected to be launched end of this year but Jolla somehow asked interested parties to order the pig in a poke. It was known that it comes with Jolla's own Sailfish OS, the the phone - which has still no official name - features a touchscreen, that the battery cover is exchangeable and since earlier this week we also knew that the phone archived Android compatibility. However, today Jolla unveiled a glimpse of what the phone will be about. According to the Facebook posting, it will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon dual core CPU, the touchscreen will be a 4.5" qHD (960x540) "Jolla Estrade display" and the main camera supports 8 megapixel while the front facing camera supports 2 megapixel.

UPDATE: HTC releases Firmware Update for the HTC One mini - Said to fix Bugs and improving Stability [UPDATE]
Posted by Arne Hess - at 18:14 CET under 04 - Android News

HTC has just started to roll-out a 214 MB large firmware update for its recently released European HTC One mini Android smartphone, which was initially released with Android 4.2.2. I wouldn't expect an upgrade to Android 4.3 because the change-log says that v1.32.401.2 is said to include camera stability improvements, microphone and audio stability enhancements and performance improvements as well as USB tethering stability improvements. That's not too much for a 214 MB ROM update which is roughly half the size of the full firmware. Therefore I expect that the update contains further improvements and changes, even if they are yet nowhere documented.

THOUGHT: Now that you have an MHL-Enabled Smartphone or Tablet - What's Next?
Posted by Arne Hess - at 15:53 CET under 09 - Thoughts

In my little "What's Next?" series, let us talk today about MHL (which stands for Mobile High-Definition Link) - a technology of which I'm a big fan of but also a technology which might be still a little bit underrated and conveniently overlooked, until you have experienced its value for the first time. I had my very first contact, where I experienced its value, two years ago when I was for three months in Angola and where my MHL-enabled Samsung Galaxy S2 virtually connected my German Slingbox to the living room TV screen which allowed me to watch live German TV on the other side of the equator. However, since then many more use cases and usage scenarios were added and I want to list just a few here.

RUMOR: Blurry HTC China OS Photo hits the Web
Posted by Arne Hess - at 16:27 CET under 05 - Other Mobile OS News

Just when I wrote that Sailfish OS could be an - in my humble opinion - interesting option for HTC to use it as the underlying OS for its rumored Chinese market mobile OS; which HTC is said to work with the Chinese government as a Google, Apple and Microsoft free alternative; a photo made its way to Weibo (the Chinese version of Twitter) which is said to be a kind of home screen of this Chinese HTC OS. Clearly running on a black HTC One, it seems to be a mix between Android and HTC Sense 5 and Windows Phone's Metro aka Mordern UI. As said, it's only showing the home screen as the photo shows a shortcut to the menu, and it's not clear which kind of home screen widgets we are seeing here.

Even if Jolla still believes that the gesture-based and modern Sailfish OS is different if it comes to the overall user experience, Sailfish OS will be nevertheless able to take full advantage of the Android application ecosystem available through various app stores globally. Jolla even announced that it will cooperate with leading global app stores to ensure users can seamlessly download Android apps just as they would do on any Android device.

ENHANCED: Camera360 to support Sony QX10 and QX100 Lens Cameras later this Month

As satisfied and fascinated I'm of Sony's lens camera concept, as frustrated I was of the little bit too basic functionalities of the required Sony PlayMemories Mobile app - as I wrote in my recent DSC-QX10 review. But it looks like customers can rejoice soon. As PinGuo, maker of Camera360, announced today, it has teamed up with Sony to include their range of photography software on both, the Sony DSC-QX10 and DSC-QX100 lens-style cameras. Camera360 is said to become the first photography software to be customized especially for the QX10 and QX100, which connect to a smartphone via WiFi and/or NFC, and Camera360 has incorporated this into the upcoming updated app via the "Sony Camera" mode.

ENHANCED: Facebook tests automatic Video Playback - said to make your News Feed more Alive
Posted by Arne Hess - at 10:31 CET under 01 - General News

As Facebook announced yesterday, it has started testing - as they say - "an easier way to watch videos on Facebook". Now, when users see a video in a News Feed, "it comes to life and starts playing". To be less disturbing, thankfully videos will initially play silently but if a user want the video can be tapped to play it then with sound in full screen. If users don't care the video at all, they can scroll past. This sounds a little bit like the automatic video playback of Instagram, where videos are nevertheless played with sound. Therefore it's much better done since otherwise Facebook can become pretty noisy. Also, the new functionality has some limitations at the moment.

First of all, v5 comes with a totally new sidebar menu which slides-out if the Twitter icon in the upper left corner is tapped. It reminds of the Facebook slide-out menu. From here, users can access their stream, notifications, messages but can also see activities, trending topics as well as finding people and accessing the own profile. Here it's also possible to change between different Twitter profiles. This view can be even rearranged.

REVIEW: Sony Cyber-shot DSC-QX10 WiFi Lens-Camera for Android and iOS Smartphones

If you have read my recent column - "Instagram, EyeEm an Co. - or how your Smartphone Photos can become your own Art" - you already know that I'm a big fan of smartphone photography since my smartphone is always with me. Therefore I was absolutely thrilled when the first Sony Cyber-shot lens camera leaks hit the web because the idea to put a complete camera on your phone sounds pretty appealing. The concept behind the Cyber-shot lens camera is that it is a complete camera, with lens, image sensor, etc. but without the camera body and display. And indeed, at last last week's press conference at the IFA in Berlin, Sony officially announced the Cyber-shot DSC-QX100 and DSC-QX10 WiFi lens cameras.

At the still running IFA in Berlin, last week Huawei - so far best known for its 3G dongles, tablets and smartphones - unveiled for the first time its Mediacast HD500 - a DVB-S2 satellite receiver with HbbTV (red button). The pretty much state-of-the-art Huawei Mediacast HD500 has a DVB-S2 twin tuner for simultaneous recording up to two programs as well as the typical slots for CI+ modules to also use the set-top box with pay TV smart cards, such as HD+ and Sky. Furthermore its comes with a built-in 500 GB hard disk to record up to 500 hours of standard definition and 250 hours in HD resolution. However, it wouldn't be a Huawei set-top box if the HD500 would be just another dumb satellite receiver but it also comes with WiFi at 2.4 and 5 GHz as well as LAN which allows easy integration into the home network.

Posted by Arne Hess - at 12:46 CET under 04 - Android News

When Samsung announced and introduced the Galaxy S4 earlier this year, it was state of the art. However, as technology develops, Samsung will soon introduce an updated version of its Galaxy S4. As Deutsche Telekom unveiled this morning, Germany's number one mobile carrier is upgrading its LTE network from Cat 3 with 100 Mbps to Cat 4 with 150 Mbps. And as much as the mobile network requires an upgrade, the terminals also require an upgrade. This can be either done by firmware updates or by releasing new devices. Unfortunately is the current Galaxy S4 chipset, as sold in Germany (and most other European countries), not Cat 4 compatible which means it can't be upgraded to 150 Mbps. Therefore is Samsung releasing an updated version of the Galaxy S4 soon which then will also support Deutsche Telekom's upgraded 150 Mbps LTE network.

The roughly 2.5" sized screen is square but has large bezels on the top and bottom.
