While Samsung is following Motorola on the "Q-trip", Motorola managed to get another momentum, even if it is just an announcement so far without publicly shown hardware (yet) but during the 3GSM Word Congress Motorola announced a UMTS version of the not yet released Motorola Q Windows Mobile Smartphone (which would be the second UMTS-enabled Windows Mobile Smartphone after the Asus 3P305 3G):

Showing its commitment to evolving the mobile office beyond the exclusivity of the corporate boardroom, Motorola yesterday announced the UMTS version of its heralded Q device family. The first Q is expected to ship with CDMA/EVDO capabilities later this quarter with the newly unveiled version expected to be available for operator trials in late Q4 2006.

Touted as the first family of devices that blend style with productivity; the Q offers an uncompromising combination of a great phone, powerful email and captivating entertainment features that deliver a strong business and personal mobile experience. People of all professions, interests and ambitions can be productive, in-touch and stylish whenever and wherever they choose.

"The addition of UMTS to the Motorola Q family expands the capabilities and geographic reach for those that want a true mobile PC-like experience without the size and weight of a PC," said Ron Garriques, Executive Vice President, President, Mobile Devices, Motorola, Inc. "Q liberates everyone from the restraints of today's office and lets them stay productive, creative and entertained whenever and wherever they are."

Being an industry revolutionary demands superior voice quality and Motorola's industry-leading expertise in RF technology innovation and integration delivers it with the Motorola Q.

The Q device family leverages Microsoft's familiar and trusted Windows Mobile software which delivers corporate mobile messaging support out of the box with Exchange 2003, and is also optimized for a variety of third party email solutions that enable an even broader set of corporate email capabilities.

With an amazing color screen, wireless broadband capabilities and a full media experience with Windows Media Player, the Q device family enables you to have fun.

The first Motorola Q is expected to be available this quarter on CDMA/EVDO and available for operator trials in late Q4 2006. At this time no operator customer relationships have been announced and pricing hasn't been disclosed. Same for the UMTS Q, no price nor any operator relationship but let us keep an eye on CeBIT next month, maybe we will get more information there.

Cheers ~ Arne
