While it was expected that
Mozilla's first
Fennec Windows Mobile build was released late 2008 already, it took a little
bit longer to get the first Windows Mobile build available. However, the Fennec
developers finally put its Windows Mobile version online and Fennec is now
available for public download. Nevertheless, this version is a very early
pre-Alpha build with lots of bugs and performance issues but it shows what
Fennec for Windows Mobile aka Firefox Mobile will try to deliver in its final
version. In order to focus the developers efforts on getting this release out,
they have targeted only one device, the
HTC Touch Pro.
This has a number of user interface implications, including graphics designed
for a 300 dpi screen, control layout intended for a VGA screen and reliance on a
hardware keyboard for text input.

Some features, we will later see in the final release are not yet working.
For instance the auto-update mechanism (both for the browser itself and for
extensions) as well as the plug-in support which is currently disabled. Last but
not least, there is no softkeyboard support so you need to test it on a Windows
Mobile Professional smartphone with a hardware keyboard.
